  1. Myself and my thai wife went to a visa agency in Chiang Mai to assist us in obtaining a spousal visa to go to the U.S. This was just before Covid-19 hit and everything was put on hold for a long time. After Thailand started to open up again, as well  as the rest of the world, we approached the visa agent to see what the progress was with our visa application. He basically was stringing us along and, unbeknown to us he closed up his visa agency. Thia was after he stopped answering his phone calls from us or returning our calls. We found out from sources he had stiffed other clients and we traveled to Chiang Mai to see the police there. We were informed by the Police that since this was a civil matter, a complaint needed to be filed with them within 3 months. It was fruitless to try and explain to them that we were in the midst of a pandemic and not very practical to file a complaint with them within 3 months even had we known about this requirement because everything during this time was shutdown including the U.S Embassy and Consulate office in Thailand. The bottom line was the Police said there was nothing they could do and tried to refer us to a lawyer. They were insistent that we contact this lawyer and they gave this atty our ph# who called us to try and get our business. He wanted a few thousand baht to get the ball rolling, and God only knows how much he would have hit us up for with no assurances of being able to get our money back. We decided to just drop our case  and didn't hire this atty and just chalked up our loss of money as an example of how it is easy to get fleeced in Thailand.

  2. It sounds like you have your mind made up so I would go and live there, if I were you, just for the relatively clean air, if nothing else. Your monthly rent would be very reasonable and you are already familiar with the surrounding area, not to mention that if your health starts to head south, you would have your ex to take care of you. It sounds like a win win to me. Good luck.          P.S. I was living in Chiang Mai with my now wife and after a 2nd bout of bronchitis I said that was it for me We moved from Chiang Mai. It was the best thing I ever did and your health should be most important in your decision making.

USA folks can link a google voice and get free SMS inbounds.. You need a USA regsitered google account and then add voice and link.

ROW has a harder appoach.. I have done it on a corporate level with SIP phone systems but it was a complex setup.. Guys like xpatphone (UK only maybe) powered by devyce ( https://devyce.com/ ) wrap it in a neat wrapper but the app based SMS reception is kinda meh.

  4. I broached this issue before but Mr dumbass (me) never followed through. Now, since I don't have a U.S. ph# I need to sign up with a reliable company so I can get a U.S.ph# which I can use on my android in order to receive text messages such as from my credit card company. Any recommendations for a good company that enables me to receive a text message such as from my credit card company would be greatly appreciated. This time I will act on it because I need a U.S. ph#  now in order to receive text messages for 2FA. Thank you.

  5. Just wondering, especially since the price of gold has risen significantly, if one has to be concerned about buying gold and whether or not it is the real stuff and not some fake looking  realistic looking stuff? There are gold dealers all over Thailand and are their any safety standards in place to ensure that what one is buying is actually gold or is it buyer beware?

  6. I was wondering if, as an example, your thai wife or g/f owned property in Thailand, they had a chanote on file in the appropriate gov't Dept, could an unscrupulous person somehow manage to falsify another chanote showing the property in question was sold to another person and have it recorded in the Gov't office? In so doing, the crook could sell the property they just stole or go to a lending  institution with the forged document to obtain a loan against the property.? I would like to think that any new ownership of property would require both parties to have to appear at the appropriate gov't land records office to finalize the transaction.  If this question borders on paranoia or is outlandish, I will put my tail between my legs and crawl off into the sunset.

  7. Digbeth- The beaches might be a little better and I guess if one is staying in the aforementoned small towns you listed for a short time, I guess it wouldn't be a problem. For long term I'm not sure because now you are farther from Prachuap in case you need medical care and that much further from Hua Hin and Bangkok and even more isolated. At least Prachuap has a Lotus, a Makro a Global house there. I hope at some point the powers to be decide to build a mall in Prachuap which would be a welcomed addition.
