  1. Hi,

Holding a valid Non Imm "O" visa i've two questions.

    1. Can I apply for a Work permit under this visa (given that all other requirements.paperwork is in order)

    2. To work under the designation "Assistant Manager" for a registered tutorial school (note: teaching does not fall under my scope of work) is a degree still needed for a non-academic role?

I've been told by my prospective employer's lawyer that i need a degree to take up ANY position in a registered school. However, i have been informed by friends under good authority (some already work in admin in schools)that an expat does not need any such qualification.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

  2. Hi,

Could someone please clariy with factual info, not opinion or hearsay the following question.

Once the 400,000 has been transfered from overseas into a Thai bank to obtain your marriage visa one year extention, can the same funds simply remain in the account and then be used again in subsequent years?.......or do the funds have to be seen to enter the country from overseas each and every year?

    Many Thanks.

  4. Hi,

Does anyone know what the actual law is/legal consequence with regards to exceptional long term over-stays (eg. years).

It is clear that the maximum fine is 20,000BHT (@500/per day is equalivant to a 40 day over-stay), however, neither the immigration or Interior Ministry websites provide details on the law or actual legal penalty for "exceptional" long term over-stays.

    Whats the legal postion/law?

  5. Hi,

I'd like to know, what is the actual rule/law on the annual funds that are required with regards to 1) retirement visa (800,000 BHT/per year for extention) and 2) marriage visa (400,000 BHT/per year for extention).

Specifically, i want to know whether these funds have to be brought in EVERY year (evidence of which to be shown to immigration), OR is it legally acceptable to the immigration deptartment that your Thai Bank simply needs to be seen to have the required amount of funds at the time of visa extention renewal each year (again, evidence of which to be shown to immigration).

If i've lost anyone following the above..sorry, but simply put, can the same funds be used year after year, (whats the actual legal stand point) or do new funds have to be brought in annually?

I know and appreciate what can and can't be done when having a good relationship with authorities in the Kingdom, but in this case, i'd just like some clarification on the actual/legal position.

I've read the immigration website, Interior Ministy website, Thai Embasssy (UK) website and various forums, but none are able to clarify this point.

Any help factual help would be most welcome.

    Thanks

  6. I'm looking for piston & rings and a gasket set and a propeller, all in standard size for a

    Yamaha 40 hp ( HEMO - 6H4 L 45013 ) , 3 cylinder model.

Where can i find these in or around Bangkok?

    Thanks

  7. Hiya...

I’d like to introduce my family to some western culture.

Can you recommend a nice pub in BKK that would be suitable for a family for that traditional Christmas dinner on the 25th?

If you have addresses/telephone numbers it would be beneficial.

    Thanks-Leprechaun.

Plenty of good "farang" pubs serving Christmas food this year, but many are near roads associated with girly bars as thats where most forigners socialize. So dinner in the evening might be an eye opener for young kids....

Nevertherless, if its a family Christmas dinner, and you're in the Sukhumvit area, try the Huntsman Pub located below the Landmark Hotel. Large, reasonably priced (Thai & western Men should someone not like the Christmas dinner) and with live entertainment..but book now!!!!!

  8. My laptop is knocking on a bit.

I want a new one. I will keep it for at least 3 years.

I only use laptops because I'm always on the move but I crave power so I can live with a bit of bulk.

I want the fastest, sleekest, most rootin' tootin' laptop money can buy. I want one of those fangled gloss deep black screens with wide aspect ratio. It will be my television, DVD player, duke box, lover :o  most super dooper window on the World. I want to play heavy duty games... I want it all.

    Any recommendatons?

If I could just throw in a suggestion or two. . .

You should try to get one of the Intel Centrino chips. They are at least as fast as the P4 chips but they use up incredibly less power and give off much less heat. This allows you much more battery power, and less worry about burning up your laptop in Thailand. I believe these machines are generally lighter too. A 1.8ghz centrino is about the same as a 3.0 p4 but you can find centrinos at 2.1ghz or more.

A big bottleneck with laptops is the mediocre hard drive. The best you can find now is the 7200 rpm Hitachi travelstar and I'd recommend this as an upgrade at least as important as an extra bit more juice on the cpu.

Yes, get one of those nice neat screens! I have a pretty typical screen on my laptop and I have been seen drooling over those Sony screens I saw at the mall.

    Just to add,

I ran a Sony Viao P4 last year. BIG MISTAKE. Battery life is pathetic and pro-longed use resulted in MAJOR overheating and unlitmately the actual casing of the notebook warped!

Unbelievably, the Sony service centre on Petchaburi road, denied any liability and put it down to wear and tear (after only 8 months of ownership).

However, whether the same overheating problems still remain with the Centrino chip in a Viao, i cannot comment.

I run a Compaq and Centrino now and have had no problems, but would not by Sony Viao again as i simply would take the risk of the same disappointment.

  9. :o Hi.. I'm not a farang but Thai. I need some information about VISA. My boyfriend want to work and live in Thailand. which type of VISA he should have? and how to get that. He didn't find the job yet. Can he get multiple entry non-immigration type 'O' to have more time to find job?

Unless your boyfriend is a professional/specialist, is 100% literate in English or Thai (i meniton this fact as he has not asked his visa questions questions himself in this forum) or has the funds to start his on business/venture, then you both need to clearly understand that finding legitimate work in Thailad would be extremely difficult.

  10. Surplus cash?

Then i'd say purchase condominiums in new developments in popular locations as you can own and rent them out yourself.

As a guide, a mate of mine (one of your fellow USA citizens) in Dec 2003 was also in a similar position. He purchased 2 simple studio type condominiums for a total of approx. 3.2million baht ($80,000) within the space of 2 months and now hsa them rented out at approx, 40,000 baht ($,1,000).

Not such a large immediate return on investment, but he has recently been offered 3.8million (approx 17% profit in 12mths) for both! (not forgeting the rental income too....)

Of course i'm in no way saying this type of property value increase will continue. I'm just pointing out a fact.

Finally, both deals went through with any problems with either the seller, buyer or local authorities.

  11. Firstly......DONT PANIC!

In the short term, regional Governments won't let the dollar sink lower; however, dont expect a rebound any time soon either.

Keep you money exactly where it is......Ride out the storm!!!

DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT venture into Forex markets as a small investor, and especially when its your savings on the line, as there are too many sharks out there looking for people in your position. Even the advice of seeking councel from investment banks is, i believe, not the way to go as none of them were able to predict such movements in the forex markets in the first place. NOONE CAN PREDICT THE MARKETS, either Forex or Stocks. Bottom line, there is no quick fix and any promise of such is unsubstantiated.

Until the dollar shows signs of a recovery, it would be prudent for you to instead economise on your own lifestyle/budget rather than look for ways to maintain it with a devalued montly income as this is UNDER YOUR OWN CONTROL.

    Finally.....DON'T PANIC!

    Best of luck.

  12. Although the financial sector has become more strict (eg. many banks will refuse the opening of an account with a work permit), it is still possible to open a simple savings account with a reasonable deposit and your passport; Bangkok Bank seems still to be open to this and your local accomadation address will suffice.

Rental mail boxes (UPS MBE etc.) are available at numerous locations (BiG C superstores, BTS Stations etc.) and can be rented for various time periods (1,3,6,12 months etc.) with your passport. As i remember a 3 month rental cost approx $30.

Should you wish to transfer large amounts, then wire transfer is the way to go as you'll get the best rate. However, ATMS, and Forex outlets for cash withdrawls on credit cards are availabe everywhere, so it may be unnecessary for you to transefer large amounts of dollars, especially with such a poor rate at present. I'd keep my money offshore and draw on it (via ATM) as and when needed.

As for shipping costs, you'd be far better off contacting a local freight forwarding agent in Boston to get exact current prices (don't forget insurance) and details of any custom rules or regulations this end.......but again, i would not bother as everything you will need is here. The cost that you may decide to incur for shipping your possessions, you could use yourself to buy what you need when you are here!

    Something to think about.

    Best of luck..

  13. Thanks,

Where can i read up on the exact details/amounts as i'm in the middle of a new condo development purchase. Cheers.

    Go to www.thaiimigration.com

Had a go at the above link, but the only figure i could find related to property was 10m Baht.....so in light of whats been posted by others (3m+, 6m, etc.) can anyone give a definitive figure???

    Rgds,

  14. Incidentally,

If i were to take the above mentioned website database concept to a web designer here in BKK, what would be a ball park figure to simple get the mechanics/links of it all sorted out and put on a disc which i could then add any graphcs etc., to later before uploading to the web?

    And can anyone recommend anyone/company????

    Cheers...

  15. Many thanks to everyone; mattnich, kabal1234, francois, fourbaht, et33.com, for your input...

    Just a last question.....

Is my website simple to create or would i be looking at large numbers to have it built for me?

    Honestly, i quiet lost!

    Thanks again for your patience.
