  1. I’m searching for a special tripod mount to mount my camera inside an 18” ring light that I bought at MBK. Ironically, MBK doesn’t sell the right mounts for this. I searched high and low yesterday. Are there any camera / tripod superstores in Bangkok? I’m looking for a double sided tripod screw or some device with a tripod screw on both ends where I can plug the screw into the ring and my camera into the top of the screw.

  2. I'm a full-time student from the USA. I took fall semester off for a little break. I'm here on a tourist visa, and doing my share of touristing (and medical tourism with all my annual check-ups). I've also been working on some projects at a local co-working space,  exploring what business and academic opportunities I want to jumpstart when I get back to the U.S.--vacation time is a good for ideation. I don't work here nor will I collect any revenue on anything I'm working on. I leave in another month to go back home and start spring semester. The co-working space is now asking everyone for a copy of their passport as part of a new policy. Is this okay / normal?

  3. Thanks all. I talked to the front desk. They said they could do, and it would be someone coming to collect my passport. I asked about filling out a visa application, and the desk at the hotel didn’t seem to think I needed to do that and that the company coming to pick up the passport would do everything for me (but I don’t know if that means they’re just going to go to an embassy with my passport without an application or with one). Seems to me the embassy would want an application.

  4. My plan is to apply for a visa when I get to Siem Reap. The hotel tells me the hospitality desk can help arrange. However, my 10 day stay includes 4 weekend days, leaving only 6 business days to get my passport to Pnom Penh and get it back to me. Is this to tight of a timeline? Should I consider extending my stay in Cambodia a few days? Just not sure what the processing times are at the Thai embassy in Pnom Penh.

  5. I arrive in Bangkok this week, but want to make sure I've got my timing right on visa exemption / length of stay / re-entry. I am a US citizen.

Here's my itinerary in order of stops:

    - 24 days - Bangkok

    - 14 days - Manila

    - 10 days - Siem Reap

    - 57 days - Bangkok

(exit BKK by train to Kuala Lumpur)

It's the last stop that I need some help with. I don't think I can re-enter BKK from Siem Reap with a train ticket that's almost two months out, given that the visa exemption is only given for 30 days  upon entry and then I'd need to apply for a 30 day extension at immigration post-arrival. So, I'm guessing I'll need to buy a plane ticket within 30 days on the last stop (no problem).

My bigger question is do you think I'll have any issues getting the 30 day extension, given that I was in BKK the month before?

I return back to school in January, so trying to make the most of time while I have it off! And Thailand I like the most, and it's where I want to spend most of my time.

    Thanks

  6. Impulse, the lease agreement stated that I'd only forfeit my deposit. The contract did not outline that I would need to continue the lease payments (unless that's some common law).

I did leave the place in great condition (and bought additional new furnishings that I left the landlord).

I was in contact with property management after I left. They said they would contact me if they needed anything else--but never did.

To answer someone else's question about the mental hospital. Long story short I had to file an involuntary committal in the US on my dad to get him some much needed help. It was a lot of work and frustration--but he inevitably got the help he needed.

  7. I was living in BKK a little over two years ago on a sabbatical. I had a 1 year rental agreement in a condo. Sadly, 3 months in, my father became suicidal and was admitted to a mental hospital. I broke my lease and immediate left Thailand the next day to be with him, and just couldn't return back easily.

I was a good tenant. The property management company seemed very understanding. Per the terms of the lease I forfeited my deposit on the apartment (which I knew would happen) but that seemed to be it--I never heard anything else from them.

I want to come back to Thailand this year for a short vacation. My defaulting on the lease shouldn't impact my ability to enter the country would it? I can't imagine that it would but, don't want to assume that I know everything either.

  8. The nearest post office is Phra Kanong. Just up from the BTS, opposite Rama 4. it is big so you should be able to find it,. Take your tracking info there. That is where it will be.

Unless it is big and is subject to duty then it will be at the Hua Lampong , post office customs Dept.

Thanks VocalNeal! I suspect it's a large package as I shipped 4 large canisters of protein powder, so I will check with Hua Lampong.

  9. Dear Friends,

So a package has arrived for me, but apparently the address was not formatted correctly, so it did not deliver. According to the latest update, Thailand Post is trying to reconfirm the address.

I was able to input my tracking number in the Thailand Post website, so I know that it's here, but the results returned are vague.

Is there somewhere that I can go to pick-up this package? I emailed the address on the website for more info and awaiting a response.

    Thanks

    Jacob

  10. tropo, I think isopure comes out to the same price given that a $50 cannister is 6 lbs of protein...if I'm doing the math correctly...however, I am tempted to try non-flavored and make my own flavor...

I did order with bodybuilding.com. I've got a 7 to 20 day delivery time period. Does anyone know if I will be charged VAT? And if so, how much is VAT? And will I have to pay that upon delivery? Go to a post office and pay? How does that work?

    Thanks

    Jacob

  11. Friends, I need some help formatting my address...I've looked online and at the forums, but I still want to ask to make sure I'm doing it right :)

Here's what I have so far...

123/45, Condominium Name = House Number & Condominium Name

    123 Sukhumvit 45 = Street Adress

    Phrakhanong Nua = District? Province?

Wattana Bangkok = City (thought I'm not sure what Wattana is?)

    Thailand = Country

    10110 = Postal code

    Thanks

  12. Just an update on this for anyone else who may be interested...

I checked out two GNCs today to see if they carried (as they generally carry in the US) to only find out that the GNCs here seem to carry mostly GNC-branded products. What was even more interesting was the price of the GNC-branded protein (which is considered to be cheap protein in the US, compared to some of the other premium brands). One container protein (3lb) was about $120 USD--just outrageous. And the GNC protein doesn't even taste good...

Anyway, I went to bodybuilding.com, and they ship to Thailand at a very reasonable rate. I can get three containers (3lb each) for $127 USD plus $43 USD shipping. Not a bad deal I think...

What I don't know is if I'll be hit with a customs charge when it's imported. Anyone had any experience with this?

    Thanks

    Jacob

There are shops in Bangkok that sell protein and supplements at a price usually 40% of the GNC prices, and only marginally higher than if you bought from Bodybuilding.com. (Bodybuilding.com actually works out more expensive if the order is under around B6,000). The downside is the somewhat limited variety.

However if you're looking for the mainstream stuff such as Dymatize, Gaspari , BSN etc etc, then it makes a lot of sense to buy from one of the Thailand suppliers.

Thanks for the info. I just bought my first two canisters of Dymatize to hold me over. I tried it yesterday. It's good, but not as great as Isopure. Isopure protein doesn't have that bitter taste. Any others that you know of?

  14. you should know that most all the plastic bottles used in Asia leech chemicals into the water that you then ingest. Might be clean going into the bottle but is it clean coming out?

True, I am well aware. I did see that documentary called "Water" I think. Unfortunately in Thailand, you either need to attempt to filter the tap water (which I've had so-so luck with) or you need to buy bottled water.

At this point, I think it's pick your poison...and I pick bottled water.

  15. Any mosquito spray from the supermarket will sort it out. Spray before you go out and open a window on your return do you have bug screens?or get one of those bug lights (used in kitchens in the west) blue light, that will deal with a lot of them. you can also get plug in products that will do a reasonable job.

If you cant read thai ask, people will assist you.

One of the problems with the blue light is that they can attract more insects than the zapper kills.

Op, are they gnats of fruit flies? Gnats tend to congregate around white light. Fruit flies will hover over left out food and are often attracted to your nose and mouth, something to do with the carbon dioxide you exhale, I think.

As someone has already said, possibly, they are coming in on your fruit.

Any mozzie or fly spray should sort them out. Don't spray heavily and ask the shop asistant for the spray with least odour.

Thank you for the clarification. Yes, they are fruit flies. I was trying to avoid having to use pesticides in the kitchen :( that's why I was looking for flyer paper or something, though not sure that would even work...
