  1. Nothing stays the same, you have to change with it, or move on. I moved to my current location in the London suburbs 21 years ago, it was deemed a middle class area, 21 years on, it's no different from the area I moved from. I first visited Thailand 16 years ago, it's a very very different place these days, some of the changes are for the better, but most are not. Will I still retire there, who knows, I'll revisit that at the time.

  2. Morning guys, first up apologies if this is in wrong section

Currently sub contracting in London & the UK for an IT company, I do all there Data Cable & Fibre work & all their electrical installs , have done for the past 6 years.

Four installs have come up in the far east, one of which is Bangkok ( KL, HK & Singapore, being the other 3)

My question is, what are the chances of getting a work permit ? I have a family member that I can employ to help with the install, so will be employing a local.

Also the IT company will be looking for IT support once the office is up & running, if any of us on here do that sort of thing.

    Thanx a million guys

    Lee

  3. I think the whole immigration/visa thing needs a complete overhaul, like by the time the wife & I go back to Thailand, we will be married at least 12 years, to Me that should make it easier to become a citizen, but we all know it won't.

As for the English Teachers with this Micky mouse Certificate teaching English, this should stop.I was Educated & raised here in London, speak with a cockney accent, most Americans find it hard to understand Me, imagine Me trying to teach young Thai kids English, I don't think so.

A French guy befriended Me on FB via another friend, trying to get information about marriage visa for his wife, his written English was so bad I had trouble trying to make sense of what he was actually asking, this guy now teaches English somewhere in BKK..............................Wrong in every way.

Hard enough if you are a native English speaker with a regional accent..............near on impossible if English is your second language & you speak with a heavy accent...............Leave the teaching to the professionals, that's why they went to uni & got a degree , or go get that degree your self.

  4. IMO the dedication required to return this region to peace, just doesn't seem to be there.....eventually, if this keeps going and there are more deaths, one would hope that the international media may once again make some noises and attract attention.

EG: My family in Australia, have very little knowledge of the atrocities that happen there almost daily....I would imagine it's similar elsewhere.

I watch BBC news here in London, My mother channel 5 & My sister Sky, so between us we have it more or less covered here in the UK.....................we have heard next to nothing about what is happening down south, if it wasn't for Thaivisa.com, I would be totally unaware of the situation.

If this was going on in the middle east or Africa it would be all over the news, this has to be brought to the attention of the world, it's outrageous what the Muslims are doing there, setting fire to monks WTF. Once again it's Muslims wanting their own way, their own laws in a none Muslim country.

I don't know the answer, could it be full scale war ? could they have an independent state ? could they come under Malaysian rule (not an option I know)

A massive problem, that isn't going away any time soon, I can only see it getting worse & that's very sad indeed :-(

  5. I don't think you can just say it's either this or that.

I, when single, would never date a girl with a family, regardless if she was living on the social or was earning more then I was, some men are fine with that, western or otherwise.

A survey taken in the UK a few years back asked young women aged 18-28 what they were looking for in a man, they said tall dark & hansom, drives a BMW or Mercedes, lives in his own 3 bedroom semi & earns £100k per year.

My wife's friends from uni & the TV & film industry she worked in, never ever wanted to date out of their culture, they are all well educated, some from middle class backgrounds, all have a better standard of living then I do here in the UK. But now they see how happy My wife & I are, some are now thinking to themselves, maybe I should try dating a farang.

But My wife tells them, it's not a fairy tale, it's hard work in the west, it's not for everyone.

We all look for different things in life,no matter what background we come from, could I marry or even date an ex bar girl, not on your life, could a middle class Thai girl date a farrang, sure they can, if they really want to. My wife & I have just set up two of our friends, he's an electrician in London, she went to uni in New York & now works for a major Thai TV company, both 25, works for them.

Guess what I am trying to say is we can't generalise .

  6. All happening way too fast for My liking, 2 to 3 months dating & already talking marriage !

I know everyone is different, but Thais (in My experience) do everything over food, & would expect either you eat dinner at the family home, or they take you to their favorite restaurant, no food seems very none personal,I have even known job interviews to be done over lunch, all seems very strange to Me.

As for paying sin sod here is Thai Embassy.com have to say

"Then there’s the Sin Sod, or the actual dowry, which can include anything of value, but usually it is about the money. Most Westerners get confused with the amount of dowry that they have to pay to their Thai bride’s parents, as dowry prices are set at unbelievably high amounts ranging from 100,000- 1,000,000 baht."

As for people not paying it any longer, bo**ox, I know a Thai guy who payed 10,000,000 Baht only last year, I was at the wedding. As for them giving it back, that's My concern.

Good luck fella, do let us know how you get on.

  7. So what you saying?? coffee1.gif alt=coffee1.gif width=32 height=24>

    e-dog tong

sic. the fact that you know that term as a foreigner and openly use it in a written example says a lot of about the type and quality of person you hang around with. Pretty harsh term to throw about openly.... xthumbsup.gif.pagespeed.ic.ysn6H7pBDU.we alt=thumbsup.gif width=25 height=19>

Been to LOS 9 times, been married for two years, been with My wife for 4 years now & never ever heard that word ! OK My spoken Thai is very poor, but guess it would be a word I would know if mixing in the bar girl scene.

I have to say, Thailand was never on My list of places to go, for the stereo typing reasons, went there by default, thought it was OK, preferred Indonesia, visited a second time ( on My way to Indonesia) to see a more of the culture & thought that was it, wont be going back. Met My wife here in the UK, whilst She was on holiday, went to visit her several times in LOS & see the real side of Thailand & love it despite all its faults.

Now I understand the sex trade side of the country is just a small part of this place & I was stupid & naive to stereo type a whole country on what we are spoon fed by the media.

When people find out My wife is Thai, they automatically grin & others ask if she is a lady boy, I just say she had her bits cut off & we keep them in a pickle jar at the side of the bed, just to remind us, that soon shuts them up LOL

Xxxx them I say, if they want to be as naive & stupid as I once was, so be it, couldn't give a dam_n what people think.

  8. Isn't it time that all tourists were issued with warnings in their home countries before going abroad (to anywhere - not just Thailand)?

No one bothers about researching their destination these days; maybe publicity would help some of these unfortunates.

Should not be too difficult to find out about a country in the days of Google and Lonely Planet. I work in a hotel and am always amazed at how little some of the guests know about the destination they visit.

The first time I got tricked by a ladyboy, was in the 80's in Los Angeles. That's in America by the way. Ahem. I won't go into that, it was very embarrassing and well . . .

Last time I got "tricked", was about 3 years ago, fending off a fat ladyboy, while I was getting on my motorcycle after a bit of clubbing in Bali.

I was a little drunk and this lady boy managed to empty my wallet and put it back in my pocket without me noticing.

I was amazed the next morning and was told if s/he had been caught with the wallet, the locals might have beaten her to death, because its

bad for tourism. Interesting attitude in Bali.

Alcohol definitely lowers normal awareness and defence mechanisms.

That should not be hard for us to figure out. Should it? The world's most available legal drug.

At a guess, I would say he is Muslim coming from Oman, which means he has never drunk alcohol in his life, would never take drugs & god forbid he would never knowingly go with a ladyboy , I feel sorry for the poor man !

  9. This may well have already been said, so sorry if i am repeating what some one has already told you.

First up you have a fault on the machine, if you had a proper earth connection, it would keep blowing the MCB (miniature circuit breaker) so that leads on to the second problem, you don't have an adequate earth connection & as has been mentioned earlier, the said fault now has an earth path through you or your wife.
