  1. As with everything,it is good to have a plan B. Medical evacuation is the one thing I would plump for if allowed insurance at reasonable rate. Buying two business seats on direct flight, showing up few minutes before flight may just pull something off, airlines will dump economy flyers like yesterday if ill ,but will have second thoughts if "upper class"

Travel to India or Malaysia if surgical needs are to be considered, fantastic treatment and savings.

  2. It's a place for lonely old pathetic men

Better a lonely old pathetic man here in Thailand than one in the UK for sure. If your not old (as yet) there will be a time when you are old, unless you have visions of topping yourself, which in your case may well be advisable

  3. Quite a well spoken guy,the "not for comment" speech he gave was an insight, Sorry to see the guy go,do not have to be so diplomatic to the point that words just sound like a soggy cardboard box

  4. My experience of Thai wives is less hopeful. For one the weather will not help, the job situation is diabolical, housing and every bit of life ahead is a struggle unless you already have a house.

One example a guy few years ago took his Thai wife to the UK with her 3 kids, recently she went barmy, into nut house, the 3 kids are struggling at school, send them back I say.

The amount of Thai women taking husbands to court for house/maintenance in UK is unbridled ,think the biggest proportion of foreigners are Thai women

I say forget it,there is no untold wealth there anymore, life is a misery for most and will get far worse

  5. Your "take" is spot on. It pretty much describes my visage of my how and why. I find it interesting that you posted it here, I would add emphasis to "No theatre, art, good original live music or crisp autumn days in the park." and extend it to the country at large. The lack thereof is a window to the remorseful island of this country and this area in a sea of accelerating change and modern civilization. Eventually, the benefits simply won't compensate and that will drive one out no matter how good life is in the self-bubble. Five years is a long time to be without fresh air.

I could not describe the situation any better.

Things are a-changing in Thailand, what was, now is-not, the attitude of Thai be it official or the guy in the street has hardened somewhat over the years. Life living under a visa regime is a doubtful life, the yearly chain is not for being overlooked . I feel as no distinct change to visa conditions will change in the near future but I feel as though the starting blocks for visa change are being thought of though.

5 years for me is too long without fresh air, regular trips back to the 'omeland compensates though

  6. Whichever way I look for the cheapest, and it ain't particularly cheap at the mo. Yes Matrix is good, then the airline direct, saves about £30 on their stated price. That Belgium airline Jetfly (or something like) gives good fares 299 Euros all in into Brussels, one way, then Eurostar for about £30 booked in advance

    http://www.jetairfly.com/en/ correct ?

    Right.

Just booked with the arsehol_e of all arsehol_e airlines Air India ,BKK/LON return..£620,only reason is that there is a 10 ton baggage allowance

Nothing wrong with Air India. Have flown 24 different airlines to or from Thailand and I have AI at around 8th best.....

It is not just the 'plane it is the passengers, the newly rich ones strutting around the aircraft as though they own it,and that stinking dump Bombay to deal with, the food is the pits too.

For a hub I like Cairo ,that salad bar ,all you can get stuffed down ,plus the extras for £3

  7. To all those who knew Charlie, resident of Jomtiem, and yes, he was the worlds best and greatest counterfeiter, specifically against Uncle Sam,passed away this morning.

If there was an Olympic gold medal for achievement in his specialty he would have won it many times over,a true gentleman. Sorry Charlie you had to go.

    RAF veteran

  8. To witness a dog dying through poisoning is horrific to the extreme, foam frothes from its mouth as it struggles to draw breath,it convulses frequently ,can take hours to actually die,it cries for help, yelping until it gives up ,just gradually breathing shallower and shallower ,until a welcome death. The bastard who did this should be forced to have a sample of his "cure"

  9. If its on Sophon it will probably have Thai commentary Think BBC3 or perhaps BBC radio 5 live commentary in English that can be picked up on the computer will be covering the Olympics, perhaps out of sync though with Sophon TV broadcast

Well the Thai channels will understandably be focused on events with Thai athletes. Is BBC radio streamed in Thailand? UK video content is blocked here.

So what time Thailand time do the OPENING ceremonies start? I'm sure that must be covered somewhere even on Sophon ...

Sure BBC radio not blocked on computer, put in webwarper or something to unblock UK video

    Shudder ... Air india

Just to add that Egyptair currently allow up to 46 kgs, in 2 bags (of 23 kgs max each) and Jet Airways (of India) 28 kgs (also 2 bags only)

    , i think

It isn't the fact that the allowance means anything, yes bag checked in,but its the carry on bit that makes the eyes boggle,in line Terminal 5 Air India, they have carry on items 5 times heavier than the checked baggage,Christ I looked at one party there were 3 individuals struggling to get one lump of whatever onto the plane. The plane must have rocket assisted means to get airborne
  11. Aloha

The Pollution Solution Group are one of the guilty ones, we feed, water, apply mange medicine to around 50 dogs and when we can, take them to the vet, we had one dogs leg, amputated from car accident, owned by a homeless person, gave them some baht for the dog, named Heartbeat and had her adopted, (A rags to riches story) another dog lost her eye, both cost 2 thousand baht each.

Today at Soi 6 Jomtien Beach, a lovely lovable female dog, we named Sweetheart, that lives on the beach, is in heat and for the past few days 7 male dogs, fighting, trying to mate, scaring people, making a mess, we took her to the vet to be spayed and make it safer for the beach-goers, when the smoke clears, 2 thousand baht, she will need to stay there for 7 days, we feed, water the local, harmless, strays, or with homeless people, we find a fed, watered dog is not a problem, we are doing our best to spay and neuter these dogs, letting them, live out there lives.

We are always open for help, be it dog food or vet help.

We rather not, be the judge and jury of the lives of mans best friend, assisting them and reaching out for humane solutions is our goal.

Helping the Voiceless be it Children, Wildlife, Waterways, Soil and of course Mans best friend, is our goal.

The govt vet by fire station charges 500 baht a spaying, I take lots of soi dogs,I take stitches out after about 8 days

I have been looking for the govt vets near the fire station for years, and still cannot find it.

Entrance to fire station, off 3rd road, just by the gates, immediately on the left is the govt veterinary station

Yes but you see,I have all this money pouring in,gold plated, index linked stuff, cannot spend it fast enough, phook me (sic), do the girls mean that? do I have to follow a dickheads self illusion ,up his own arse stance,I love the guy, but just a complete tosser amidst the myriad of self appointed/self anointed tossers....,now Ill pore over x hamster.com,thanks for looking.
  16. "cooked"

    1) To my recollection - I have never commented on any of your posts nor called anyone stupid on this thread.

    2) There is a difference between "uneducated" and "under-educated" - which might escape some "lesser educated" individuals

    3) Please re-read Peppy's comments (who is very logical in his arguements). His reference is to your apparent lack of ability in the Thai language - not whether you are fluent in several languages (as you claim).

When opinions differ - logic should prevail (not opinions reinforced by egos). However, when the arguements presented are not logical (only opinionated) no reasonable discussion can elucidate the subject matter.

Wrong, read again. People feel insulted when they are told that they are un- under-, lesser or over- educated. They assume that they are being called stupid. Mr. Peppy's arguments are well put but seem to have missed the point that I was trying to make as do you.

Yes I claim to be fluent in three languages + a dialect, to be exact, did help doing business in Switzerland for 40 years and my kids thank me for it. I was forced over this period to simplify my English, which doesn't do any harm, but has stayed with me. Please don't assume that people that don't express themselves in a refined manner are thick. Opinionated? Yes there is a lot of that present in this 'rational discussion'.

To be perfectly honest any insult intended from a dick'ead (whoops sorry)( wrong spelling) can only summarise as "what a dick'ead" (whoops again) A superior being with a wallet stuffed with telephone numbers, and a bit ,and I mean a bit of the green stuff, nothing like one stuffed with the brown and red stuff ,a passport with a ed visa stamp, nothing quite like a passport that's there for the use of ie Carribean (oops) wrong spelling, wherever thou wants to go at a moments notice

I know this <deleted>,camel coat(bought at Oxfam) fluent in Russian ,Chinese(Mandarin)Christ knows what, used to monitor this <deleted>(jobsworth, well was my job)),Christ he did not eat for days this Superior Being, still never mind eh!,a language ,yes that is simplified, I 'd say from someone likened who has just climbed outa (whoops) a tree.

I need not be told anything from a worthless, pig ignorant,(yes money talks <deleted>)loser so up his own arse that the even his own <deleted> smells like roses PS how you spell arguement?

  17. 23962323

How can you claim to be able to speak Thai within a few hours - and - how can you pass judgement on ANY language when even your English is quite UNINTELLIGIBLE?

I did quote BASIC Thai, and I do agree with above poster regarding simplicity/primitive aspects, also the OPs statement too, perhaps yourself an orator of the spoken (Thai) word in its simplicity and your understanding is somewhat in tandem, and if my cryptically or understanding for you is upsetting, so be it

Rather than being in judgement , I am aware of increasing efforts of the Thai govt.to improve English standards( and hurriedly) with a view to 2015 ,and all that.

  18. You will find it incredibly difficult to find any veterinarian in Thailand who will put down an animal, regardless of how bad it's condition is. They just won't do it, I believe for religious reasons.

This is a fallacy - there are plenty of vets - they don't like to publicise because of the buddhist resistance to this.

may I suggest therefore that hose wishing to rescue animals first find a vet willing to euthanise.

You just substantiated Phil's 'fallacy'. Whether the vet won't do if 'for religious reasons' or whether the vet is reluctant to publicise their willingness to euthanize because of 'buddhist resistance' is the same thing.

First thing to note; the karma principle prevails here. That mangy, one-eyed dog is probably someone who did bad things in their previous life so why on earth would you want to ease their suffering?

I think the thinking is if you look after a dog in this lifetime, the dog will look after you in the next lifetime.

Anyway, the vet asked me yesterday if I wanted to to the deed,my dog had had its day, only a youngster, but had infection that could not be treated, said OK,the port already installed into her leg,put the syringe into the port and squeezed slowly vet listening with stethoscope until heart beat stopped, sad ,but what a way to go

  19. Can anyone recommend a book on Thai language or if not any other books related to the topic of this thread as its interesting stuff?

This is why I think the Thai language is too simplistic/primitive: I was watching a film the other day in English with Thai subs and the English guy said "Hey, would like you like some of this?" and in the Thai subtitles it said "Ow mai".

How can the meaning, emotion and implication of "Hey, would you like some of this" be conveyed with just the word "want?". I don't understand.

As you can see I don't have an educated opinion on the matter so please recommend me a book!

Go along with this....one word (in Thai) can mean anything up to 6 or more meanings, only the grunting and groaning delivering the word defines what the particular word is meant to mean.

Learning basic Thai is easy, few hours and can hold simple conversation, trouble is the Thai thinks you have a thorough understanding of Thai and starts off like a machine gun. The Thai language is a dying language, nobody else outside the boundaries of Thailand understands it,too difficult, and if English is not taught post haste Thailand will become isolated from the rest of the world.

Even Burma is surprising, middle to old age people can speak English well, youngsters not one bit, catch up there too
