  1. Check out Miyom Seafood located at the end of Phichitrangsan Road. They transport their own seafood up to Ubon twice a week, so it's very fresh (you can pick out the fish/prawns from the tank).

Nit the owner is very friendly (although she doesn't speak any English). Oh', and try the crab curry - it's delicious.

  2. I am helping my wife apply for a UK visa. I have some quick Q's I'm hoping someone can help me with:

    1. I live in Thailand, although we will be staying at my mums house during our trip. I have a note from mum, with a copy of her passport. Now when filling out the family visit application form online, I am not presented with an option to click she'll be staying with her "mother-in-law". Should we change visa type, or just add myself (I am sponsoring my wife on this trip)?

    2. I'm only able to obtain copies of my apartment contract here in Thailand, rather than the originals. Will this cause a problem?

    3. Do we need to translate our Thai marriage certificate into English?

    4. My wife owns some land. Is it advisable to translate the land ownership document into English?

    5. Should my wife include her birth certificate, and if so, should we get this translated?

    Thanks very much in advance.

  3. I don't mean this as an ad, but thought the locals in Ubon would be interested to know that Baan Wine are now hosting weekly wine tasting sessions. I'll be heading down there tomorrow, and hope to meet fellow wine drinkers in Ubon there.

  4. Fancy going away this weekend with the wife, but not sure where to go. Ideally want something to do when we get there (we've travelled Isaan extensively, so looking for off the beaten path places), and don't really want to drive more than 5 hours to get there (from Ubon). We are into nature, food and photography.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

  5. I checked out Baan Wine this week and was very impressed. The steaks are excellent, just what I was looking for. Friendly owners, and yes, they had Jazz music :)

The owners say they plan to change the menu on a weekly basis and says he will update the site with the new menu.

All in all, a welcome addition to Ubon's dinning scene. Highly reccomend!

  6. I'm off to Sisakhet tomorrow and will arrive just before lunch time. Where do you recommend eating?

Suggestions on anything home-cooked, will consider western and Thai food... Just needs to be really well made and cooked.

    Thanks!

  7. Like I said in my original post, it would defo be bilingual and would expect the readership to be at least 80% for it to be profitable.

I've got a few locals interested. If we can get the print run costs down, it may be worth pursuing.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll keep you updated on how we get on :)

  8. I recommend getting them in the US, purely for the sake of more style of choices.

I got married last month, and myself and my wife wanted plain white gold bands. They were nearly impossible to find; plain that is. The ones we come across searching high and low in Silom, China Town, Central world etc., had rings with diamonds in them.

Luckily I found 2 rings 3 days before we got married, at the Terminal 21 shopping mall.... so I've still got my nuts intact :)

The style of the rings you want is defo something worth thinking about.

  9. It's great to read all the positive feedback.

I'm keen to network with those who are willing to help out with the project. Let me know and I'll send you a DM once I have more details.

As for distribution, was thinking of bars, coffee shops, hotels, salons, barbers and restaurants etc. Would appreciate other ideas.

I went to the printers opposite Do Home and got a quote for a 24 page A6 - half in colour, half b/w mag. On a 500 print run they quoted me 28b per copy. This is expensive - and don't think the ad sales would cover such a run, plus extras for writers and a designer. Anyone know of anywhere else in town worth checking out?

  10. Was talking to a few Thai friends the other day and got onto the subject of finding out new restaurants, where one can find houses (I'm currently looking), reviews etc. We all shared the same opinion that a free monthly bilingual magazine, supported by ad sales, could potentially help solves these issues.

I've heard KK and Sisakhet both have something similar, so wanted to ask whether this would be something you'd be interested in? If so, what content would you like to read?

    For me, I'd be interested in seeing;

    - Reviews of new and established bars, restaurants, coffee shops etc.

    - Interviews with local people involved with business in Ubon

    - A classified section

    Thoughts?
