  1. Hi, I currently have a non-O multiple entry based on marriage, valid until august. I found a job with a BOI-approved company that is using an agency for work permit applications.
While examining my files they suggested that I should either get a one year extension (which I can't get) or go get a non-B abroad (waste of time and money).

I am wrong by thinking it makes no sense at all to ditch my actual visa, valid for 7 more months, to get a 3 months single entry business visa, and that the one year extension based on employment can be done regardless of the kind of visa I got (non-O/non-B and single/multiple visa)?

Is the BOI status of the company changes anything to the standard business visa/work permit process?

  2. Can you tell us what happened exactly? They asked you to show 20.000 thb which you didn't have on you?

Last time I went there I wasn't aware of this new "rule" and didn't have that money on me. I had to pay some bribe to go through, around 1000 thb, don't remember exactly. I've read some recent reports about them asking for extra 1000 or 2000 even if you can show the cash.

  3. You must be a little bit slow, why would you think I'm an apple fanboy, I said I bought a Dell 27" which is much better value for money than the apple.

Confirmed with your virtual 4k fixation. This is complete marketing bullcrap, how do you think a screen could can support 3840*2160 with a 2560*1440 resolution? You can play a 4k movie on it? Great but so can you on a VGA screen.

Well done finding this cheap "deal", but I wouldn't touch your "Qnix" with a bargepole. A screen two times cheaper than the cheapest and already shitty brand like benQ. Yeah thanks but I'll advise anyone who wants a minimal image quality and not having to replace it every year to pass on that one. For monitors always stick to the quality brands : dell, iiyama, samsung, nec, and Apple of course ;)

Ok i'm done schooling you, have a good night.

  4. but theres no difference between a 1000$ apple display and a 200$ non-hipster branded monitor

I love it when someone displays so much ignorance with great self confidence, in several posts in a row.

A no name 27" monitor has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, which is absurd with a monitor that size.

Apple's 27" resolution is 2560*1440. The difference is huge, and you can never go back. Anyone who's advising to use a TV or a 1080p monitor has obviously never used a higher resolution.

Yes the apple is overpriced but not by that much, cheapest similar screens start at around $500.

For OP, you could invest in special suitcase for your display, that will cost a bit but could be useful if you will move a lot in the future. You could also sell it back home and buy a high res 27"+ in Thailand. They are quite hard to find but it's not impossible. InvadeIt has quite a few for sale, starting at around 20,000thb. Personnaly the best deal I found a few years ago was to go in the local Dell shop and make them order a U2713HM for about 16,000.

Be careful if you have an older mac mini, it will not be able to drive the new 4K screens.

the most ridiculous thing is apple hipster spewing ignorance left and right when all the information about how overpriced their systems are is everywhere.

this is my 200$ 27" led with virtual 4k

    gn4ho4u.png

way better than my 1300$~ HP 30"

Nice try but I highly doubt you can find a 1440p 27" for 200 bucks. Anyway your back alley contraband monitor shop does not exist in Thailand. Cheapest one available in retail is 19000thb, 25000 if you want the best in the category (Dell U2715h, but possibly cheaper direct from Dell Thailand).

By the way, 4K is 3840*2160. WTH does virtual 4k even mean? Any monitor can do that. Seems like you have no idea what you are talking about.

  5. You may have to pay duty, depending on the visa type you are arriving on. If you have a tourist visa you will probably have to pay. If non-immigrant maybe not.

I use a 42" Panasonic TV with my Mac mini here. Cost about 15,000 baht (300 British pounds).

Agree, doesn't seem worth the cost ...

You can easily buy a large screen TV for much cheaper

If you want to use it as screen for any Apple devices, more cost effective way would be to buy Apple TV and link with AirPlay

There is a huge difference between the quality of an Apple display compared to a TV.

  6. I have consulted a lawyer in these matters and here are the results.

Painting landscapes in Thailand for commercial gain, no matter where the product is sold is classed as employment and requires a work permit.

Working without a permit can have detrimental consequences such as heavy fines and even imprisonment.

I have been advised to setup a Thai Company with a Thai Director. This company employs me as a Art Consultant. I have been advised the business does not need to make a much profit, just enough to produce a balance sheet.

My online shop should be registered for tax as self employed in the UK, as my earnings would be way below the taxable threshold.

I think the problem in my case is painting landscapes for a Thai Company is virtually unheard of. The Company ships to the UK, to another company. That UK company sells products through an online shop.

Neither Thai Law or UK are up to date to really take into account, how the global economy is evolving.

Thanks for all the comments and opinions. Some of them were a bit shady (grey areas of law).

Of course your lawyer is advising you to create a company because he has this service to sell! But he forgot to tell you that you can only get a work permit if your company is employing 4 Thais. What are they going to do, hold your brushes? Having fake employees, by listing them in the companies payroll but just paying their social security is illegal. Actually paying them for no real work will also put you in trouble if your company gets a visit from officials. All in all it will cost you a lot and increase the risk of getting in trouble with the authorities. You'll also have to forget about your retirement visa and one year extensions. You'll have to go the business visa way which can be a pain in the ass in the first year of your company creation.

Some foreigners have been busted by doing online commerce but they were selling counterfeited goods in large quantities. If you are selling a couple paintings a months, your website and transactions being hosted outside Thailand, you have close to zero chance of getting in any kind of problem whatsoever.

  7. As predicted the prices on the original post were way off. No idea if this is official but brv club posted some new prices :

    Honda BR-V S MT ราคา 750,000 บาท

    Honda BR-V S CVT ราคา 804,000 บาท
    Honda BR-V E CVT ราคา 889,000 บาท

150k for bigger wheels, raised suspension and plastic crap all around the car thumbsup.gif

Almost as outrageous as the CX3, but it will probably sell like hotcakes anyway.

  8. Looks exactly like a slightly raised mobilio with bigger wheels and plastic thingies, which costs today between 600 to 740k.

Honda will probably bill this "upgrade" 100k, making the final price between 700k to 840k with the old 1.5l petrol engine. With the tax change coming or a new motor, it even may cost 50 or 100 more.

  9. Catweazle has a point. Look at this recent article : http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-news/Boy-drowns-Nai-Harn-Lake/56719

This pond has seen countless tragic drownings, the list is horrifying. Every thai around here know what's happening there. My wife knew about the last drowning before anything reached the news outlet. Word of mouth is pretty much instant. And yet, year after year kids die because their stupid parents leave them to play in the water unsupervised.

  10. The same ubuesque situation is happening year after year. They never learn. How about doing all this work 2 months before the deadline?

It's actually even worse this year, somebody in charge of this urgent issue didn't even bother to tell the governor about it, the journalist took care of it. Or so claims the governor, the lifeguard file was probably buried under a pile of more lucrative projects.

  11. OP, please slow down. Thailand is a littered, smelly shithole lacking the rule of law and filled with any kind of scam and corruption you can think of.

The biggest scam is likely to come from that pretty Thai woman who is "different" from the others.

Thailand is a great place to vacation because it has a lot of things you don't have in England or New York. It's a good bet that if your weren't looking for those things you'd be looking at Florida.

You won't be happy retired and Thailand will lose its luster quickly. Heck, I wouldn't want to live at Disneyland for more than three days.

I tried retiring in Thailand and had a one year extension of stay for retirement. You can't get that. I lasted less than the year and pulled up stakes and headed back to Oregon. Now I just visit as a tourist, usually for about 90 days.

Others have asked you to do this on a trial basis. I give you 90 days. Once you've built up enough assets and income that you can afford a first world environment, you aren't likely to want Thailand 24/7/365 and there aren't many who do. Those I know who do, to put it politely, are addicted to certain things in certain areas and it isn't healthy emotionally or physically. Either that or they have a very limited pension.

    Good luck

You must have some kind mental disorder (PTSD?) to spend you life on a forum dedicated to a country that you clearly loathe from every spore of your body. Even weirder fact is that you are still returning 90 days a year in a smelly shithole for your holidays.

  12. I am a runner, not a biker. Got a 50K run tomorrow so it will be out of bed at 2:30 am......

It is not just to beat the heat but also to beat the traffic.

People covered from head to toe is more to prevent sun reaching the pristine skin. Personally, I couldn't care less and run in shorts and vest.

If you are overheating, you may be pushing too hard. You cannot rode/run at the same intensity as you would in 18-degree weather. Take a notch out.

You may be right about me pushing too hard. I ride in the south of Phuket, there are short hills but they can be very steep (10/20%). I'm probably not fit enough to tackle them as they leave me completely drained. But I also want to get better and manage bigger climbs like Big Buddha or Kata View Point.

I also sometimes try to follow some local riders when riding around the lake at 32+km/h for a couple laps. I have to recover for 15 minutes riding at snail pace after that while they continue speeding through without shedding a drop of sweat biggrin.png

I've logged about 700km since I bought my bike. Maybe too early for higher intensity work?

What kind of bike do you have? Do you have the right gears for the steep hills? They will be murder if you don't. If it's a racing bike does it have a 34 tooth chainring on the chainset and a 32 on the back cassette? A triple chainset can make the hills easier. Are you spinning the gears ie pedaling faster on a lower gear rather than pedaling slow grinding out some huge gear? Aim for 90 pedal revolutions per minute and get comfortable with that. If you are putting the effort in on the bike which it sounds like you are make sure you are eating enough, eat lots. What you eat today is power for tomorrow. High carbs, potatoes, rice, pasta and fruits like bananas. Drinks lots too. If you don't eat and drink enough everything becomes too hard.

Racing bike with a 34*30 which is the bracket I use whenever it gets quite steep. Probably not eating enough, I haven't gained a pound since I started cycling, still way to skinny I think.

  14. Beginner cyclist here.

My main issue is not hydration since I bought a second bottle (one was not enough for my 60-90 minutes sessions) but the heat.

I can only start riding at about 5pm when the temperature start to drop and I stop before it's too dark. Even then when I finish riding I sometimes feel that I'm totally overheated and close to pass out, I need a long cold shower to make me feel better.

I see on strava many riders who start riding at 5 or 6am. Taking account breakfast and the time to wake up the brain, I wonder how those people do that and at what time they go to bed?

Even crazier, I see many local riders with long pants, long sleeves and even a hood/mask? It makes me sweat just at looking at the picture and imagining the intense heat riding equipped like that. Is this some kind of touareg trick to fight the heat or they are scared to get suntanned?
