What is needed to get a certificate of residency can dependent upon which immigration office you go to.

Some will not do one if on a tourist visa. For example Chaeng Watana immigration in Bangkok requires you to be doing 90 day report to them to get one.

Hi ubonjoe, my province gives residency certificates if you are on a tourist visa. I went through the same process two years ago but had an official tenancy agreement then. I've got caught out staying at my friend's place this time. Thanks for the info.

You could go and report yourself to immigration ( TM30 or 28 cant remember which form it is)

pay the fine then ask for a certificate or go get a certificate from your embassy.

(edit) reporting to immigration may or may not get your friend in a little bit of trouble and/or they might want your friend to do it.

Okay, I'll look at getting the certificate from my embassy. I'll probably have an official tenancy agreement with a Thai landlord on my next trip to Thailand so I may leave it until then. Thanks for the advice!

  3. I know a foreign guy who got caught with a fair amount of cannabis in Bangkok and he went through court and was let off with a fine. If you don't follow what the police say and do everything by the book there is a chance he may end up in the cells while every official procedure is followed. He probably wont have to pay much at all if he goes by the book but he will spend time in the cells and it will be a potentially long and scary experience. The foreign police volunteers are helpful in situations (small crimes)  like this if they are in your son's area. He wont go to prison if it's a small amount.

  4. I have a Bangkok Bank account which I opened easily using a Thai work visa. I now live outside of Thailand and no longer have a Thai working visa but would like to transfer my earnings from my current country (which has highly restrictive banking) to a Thai Sterling (GBP) account. I'm wondering if I can just go to Bangkok Bank and arrange a Sterling (GBP) account on the strength of my current Bangkok Bank account or if I'd need to provide documentation again? If I needed new documentation, what would that be? I'm not at retirement age and don't plan on buying a condominium. Thanks!

  5. Saraburi is like a previous poster said, the end of industrial North Bangkok, Pak Chong and Muak Lek are two beautiful places close by and Lopburi is similar to Saraburi but more pleasant with better facilities. Saraburi is a small army town, industrial, dusty, quite nationalistic and very lacking in public transport. It's not all bad but unless you have connections there I wouldn't move there.

  6. Yes it's the flooding, seemed like most of Bangkok was under water a couple of years back, so Thais don't want to invest in property and businesses that can be potentially wrecked by floods. I've heard a lot of Thais saying that in the future Bangkok will be totally underwater and I laughed at the thought but having actually witnessed the floods I would agree that it would be a major concern of mine if I were considering setting up home in Bangkok.

  7. Teaching in Thailand is not "career suicide" at all! It doesn't matter where you teach be it Sudan, Monaco or Bangkok! Future international schools are interested to know if your last school is accredited, the quality of students, exam results and your outlook and qualifications. Teaching in Thailand could be a "career suicide" if you were an unqualified English teacher but even then I'm sure some people could sell that experience up as well.

  8. That's very sad news. The problem with Koh Pha Ngan is that there isn't enough adequate law enforcement. Thousands and thousands of wealthy young westerners and East Asians turn up to a very small area drugged up and drunk, to be honest I think it shows how safe Thailand is that we don't hear stories like this everyday from Koh Pha Ngan. I wouldn't want there to be so much police there that it became uncomfortable to relax but there should be a larger and more reliable presence from the authorities there.

  9. This so obviously stinks of American intervention, there's a guy that jumped the wall of the Bangkok Hilton for heroin smuggling and he's back in the west a free man (no links to the USA) and then there's some poor sod with autism who hacked into the US military internet from a London bedsit and had to fight tooth and nail not to be sent to prison for decades (USA connection). Don't get me wrong If Aldhouse killed this guy he should face punishment but he's back in LOS due to American intervention.

  10. How about Rayong? Some good schools out there, not to sure about house prices but it's a pretty cool city but it does have some pollution and I'd also say Korat as it's a pretty big city that's easy to get around and it's near some amazing areas of natural beauty like Khao Yai, both of those cities are 2-3 hours from Bangkok and have loads of schools to find work in.

  11. I vaguely remember hearing something along the lines that Thailand requires its citizens to have an appropriate Thai sounding name in order to get their papers. A lot of Thai born Indians have Thai names and Thai born Chinese adapt their name into a Thai name. Correct me if I'm wrong, it was something I heard from a US-Thai who had problems with their US name.

  12. Balloons are not allowed on electrified rail networks as if the balloon has a line and wonders off in a gust of wind the line will conduct the electricity and most probably kill the hapless person connected to the balloon. This is a lot more relevant on rail networks with overhead lines, as has been mentioned before we don't have solid facts about what occurred before this was filmed but having worked on trains back home, balloons are definitely safety risks on electrified rail networks and I could speculate this whole issue happened because the foreigner was told he couldn't enter with balloons.
