  1. After an admittedly brief search I haven't seen anything mentioned lately about Extensions based on Marriage. I have to do one for the first time very soon so I just want to check a couple of things.

Firstly, my Mrs says she heard (from a source that may or may not be reliable) that Marriage Extensions are now being processed at the Airport office, not at Promenada any more. I'm doubting this as I haven't come across anything mentioned here on TV about that, can anyone confirm if this is true or not?

Secondly, has anyone done a Marriage Extension recently? Any notable changes to the process? How early do you need to arrive?

Thirdly, I've heard that the application has to be submitted within the last 30 days of the current stay. For example, if I am stamped in until 2 December then I cannot apply for extension until 3 November, correct?

    Any help much appreciated.

  2. I've had something similar a couple of times, in Chiang mai. 1st time a few years ago, vomiting & diarrhea overnight and into next day, fine by 2nd day. Assumed it was food poisoning. Last year had a similar thing but still felt weak and nausea into 2nd day so went to local doctor. He said it was a seasonal viral gastroenteritis and he had several patients come in with the same thing. He gave me some pills and electrolyte drinks and I felt OK after another couple of days.

  3. Hi, I have a situation that I thought I would run by the forum here. Situation is, wife (Thai / Australian dual citizen) and I (Australian) normally live in Oz but are currently here in Chiang Mai. I’m on a single-entry 90 day Non-Imm O (Thai wife) issued at Sydney consulate. We’re nearly at the end of the 90 days and we were originally going to return to Oz at that time, however Mrs needs to stay here for another month. She wants me to stay too, fine by me but there is the visa issue. With 20/20 hindsight I know I should have applied for a multi-entry in the first place, I will know better next time! It seems to me now I have 3 options.

1 - Apply to extend from the Non-O that I have now.

2 - Go out of the country for a few days, probably Laos or Vietnam, fly back in and get 30 days on arrival.

3 - As above, but apply for another single entry Non-O at Thai Embassy or consulate.

Applying to extend seems like a hassle to do just for an extra month. Let me know if I’m wrong, but from what I’ve read it looks like I’d have to do the full on application to extend and need the 400,000 baht in an account here, which I don’t currently have and don’t think I can organise in time. I believe it needs to be in the account for a minimum amount of time before application, is that correct? Paperwork is an issue too, I don’t have our original marriage certificate, only a scanned copy.

Option 2 or 3 seem workable, happy to take a short trip somewehere. The 30 day on arrival would have been an easy option before, though they seem to be more strict these days so I’m wondering if I might have any trouble with that? I don’t have a history of regular visa-running or anything, only did a visa run once before about 3 years ago at Mae Sai. Think there is any risk?

Option 3 seems the safest, just the minor hassle and expense of applying and all that, though don’t have original marriage cert which may be a problem. So what do you guys think would be the best option in this case? Any others that I haven't thought of? Any feedback greatly appreciated. I really don’t want to go back to Oz, I ‘m enjoying it here!

    Cheers

  4. Try Bo Hin market there are several restaurants , if you come from ds turn left just before the over pass , about 1.5 k down on left you will find a quiet bar run by a yank , nice guy

I'm currently staying in the Bo Hin area for a couple months, but haven't come across this yank run bar and would like to check it out. Anyone have a google map reference for it by any chance?

I'll also further confirm that Sole e Luna and Locanda are both good. Went to Mr Esan just last night, nice food and friendly host.

  5. Hi all, thought I'd let you know that I just received the result for my management plan assignment and I passed. So I wanted to say thanks again for all the info, it came in very handy. Right now I'm in the midst of my first practicum actually teaching real live students, and I seem to be taking to it like a duck to water. One of my supervisors told me the other day that I had a natural talent for it, which I never would have imagined before. It's good to be able to surprise oneself.

Andy, thanks for that advice. Certainly if one of the international schools wanted to take me on then I'd love to follow that path and I'll be looking into it when the time comes. I was mainly focusing on the Thai schools in this case as an angle for my uni assignment.

  6. Many thanks to everybody who has taken the time to share their thoughts here. There’s a lot of good points and you’ve definitely given me some ideas I can use, not only for my assignment but also in the future when I’m actually teaching.

Feel free to keep this thread going for general discussion of classroom management if you like. I’m sure there is plenty to talk about, though admittedly I can’t really add anything as I’m not experienced.

Thanks again to all for your insights.

  7. Greetings all, I have a couple of questions for those who have some teaching experience in Thailand.

I’m currently studying for a teaching qualification (specifically for science teaching) in Australia, but will be moving to Thailand in the near future and plan to look for teaching work there. For one of my assignments I have to create a classroom management plan, outlining my teaching philosophy and the classroom management theories/models behind it. I thought I might be able to pick up a couple of extra marks if I can apply my plan/philosophy to the specific classroom environment that I’ll most likely be teaching in. My lecturers & tutors seem to like that sort of thing.

So my questions, are there any classroom management theories or models that are particularly widespread in Thailand? Any preferred methods of addressing student misbehavior that may be different than in Western cultures? For instance, I’ve heard about the Thai idea of ‘face’ and I thought that might affect how students are managed.

    Any insights are greatly appreciated!

  8. Hi all, been browsing this forum for a while now and it's been very helpful. The Mrs and I are moving to Chiang Mai in about 2 years and members of this forum have been a great source of info, so thanks to everybody here for posting your thoughts, experiences and local knowledge.

One thing I haven't found here is any info about Kendo training in Chiang Mai. Any Kendo practitioners around? I am thinking of taking it up here (Australia) but there's not much point if I can't continue with it when I get to CM. Google indicates that the Chiang Mai International School has/had a Kendo club but I could not find any detailed info. Does anybody here know anything about it, like is it just for students of the school or open to all? Anyone know of any other Kendo clubs around?

    Any information greatly appreciated smile.png

  9. Whether getting an education qualification is necessary depends on your long range plans. You mention your wife is coming with you. Does she have a job? Does she intent to work and if so, as a teacher? How long do you plan on being in Thailand?

If your long range plan is to be a teacher, then pursue an education qualification. If teaching is just a stop-gap measure on the way to something else, then I wouldn't pursue it. You will be able to get a 2 year waiver for the Teacher's License (TL). You will have to take the Thai Culture Course (about a 3 day course). After the 2 year waiver, then you will have to start 'up-grading' to an education degree in order to continue to get waivers for the TL.

    All good info Scott, thanks.

We plan to stay in Thailand for a long time. My wife doesn’t plan to work there, she is originally Thai and she owns a house there already and earns income from investments. But for me, teaching would be a long term thing (or I would also be happy doing research assistance work at a university, but I don't suspect there's much of that available) so I think getting the education qualification is the way to go. That means we won’t get there until end of 2013 but that’s ok. I don’t want to have to be applying for waivers and whatnot. Is the TL easy to get with an education qualification?

  10. Hi all,

The wife and I want to move to Thailand hopefully next year, to Chiang Mai specifically. I have a Bachelor of Science, double major in biology and microbiology, plus an honours year in biology on top of that. I’m thinking of taking up teaching over there and wondering what my qualifications might lead to.

I plan to get a TESOL certificate which doesn’t take much time and would certainly be useful, but ultimately I’d really like to teach science after spending several years studying it.

I’m considering studying for a graduate diploma in teaching, which would be great to have but wondering if I really need to do that. It’s a lot of time and effort if it’s not really necessary.

Seems to be a lot of experience and knowledge here, so does anyone have any thoughts on my situation?

    Many thanks in advance.
