  1. The Vientiane website generally seems to indicate specifically a Thai Police Clearance Cert: "Evidence of criminal background checks from the Royal Thai Police" @

http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/en/consular/visa.php  (English version is identical to the Thai).

The recently posted list suggests it may only be needed teaching K12s (above), but it sounds like the luck of the draw. Best to have Thai Police Clearance Cert.

    Below are two further lists.

As far as the Letter from The Education Service Area goes...never heard of this before...they don't make it easy do they...sounds like this only applies to primary and secondary schools and not private universities...

  2. Is there any info. on the requirement for police clearance certificates when applying for a non-B at Vientiane, Laos?

I have a recently issued Disclosure Scotland certificate. Would this be enough or will I need a Police Clearance Cert from the Royal Thai Police, Bangkok. I'm currently in Bangkok on a tourist visa, but previously taught in Thailand for 5 years with a work permit and non-B + extensions.

    Thanks.

  3. Dear all,

Does anyone have any experience of obtaining single-entry non-B (UK citizen) and/or non-O dependent (Chinese citizen) visas from the Thai consulate in Guangzhou, China?

I am a British citizen and hold a Chinese residence permit for Guangzhou (Guangdong). Wife is Chinese.

The application requirements according to the website seem pretty cumbersome and do not specify the specific documents required for a non-B visa for teaching:

    http://www.thaiembassy.org/guangzhou/th/services/940/18976-VISA-|-关于签证与认证.html#3

It even mentions old work permits (I have had one before) and tax documents.

Compare this to the Thai MFA requirements which are a bit clearer:

    http://www.mfa.go.th/main/en/services/4908/15388-Non-Immigrant-Visa-"B"-(for-Business-and.html

I'm in Thailand just now and have no desire to run round in circles obtaining additional documents when I go over to Guangzhou, so just wondered if anyone had specific experience with this consulate and any likely additional docs or paperwork they may require. I already have double-legalised Chinese marriage certificates (MFA + Thai consulate Guangzhou). No teaching license required as it's a position at a private university.

Your wife will not be able to apply for a visa in Vientiane. China is on the list of countries that must apply for their visa in their home country or country of legal residence. This list says tourist visa but it applies to all visas. http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/upload/pdf/RestrictedCountries2013.pdf

After you have your extension of stay your wife will be able to apply for a 90 day non immigrant visa (category O) entry at immigration as your dependent. Then she will be able to apply for an extension as your dependent.

Edit: If she was able to apply for the visa in Vientiane they would only want a translation of your marriage certificate.

To apply at immigration for the visa and extension of stay they will want the marriage certificate legalized and the translation of it certified by the MFA.

    Thanks Ubon Joe,

I had a suspicion that this may be the case for Chinese citizens; I will recheck with the company as they may have forgotten this requirement.

So, spouses can apply for a non-O at Chaeng Wattana on the basis of my employment and extension?

  5. Just wanted to ask if anyone has experience of the documentary requirements for obtaining a non-O immigrant (single-entry) visa in Laos at the same time as applying for a non-B immigrant single-entry visa?

I'm (UK Citizen) currently in Thailand on a tourist visa, and am informed my wife (Chinese) will be able to apply for a non-O in Laos at the same time as my non-B application - the company will supply me with the non-B documentation tomorrow.

Does anyone know the specification required by the Thai Embassy in Laos for the Chinese marriage certificate? Does it have to be double legalised (English) translation in China, or can it be legalised in Bangkok at the MFA at Chaeng Wattana?

    Many thanks

  6. Thanks a lot.

Next time, I'll make sure the cancellation is done. It's one thing taking the word of a school which regularly deals with immigration, but at the end of the day, I'm the one who needs the extension and new WP.

The 20K THB will be a sore one, but if it sorts the issue, fair enough.

I also assumed that staying on an invalid extension was equivalent to being on overstay.

If your work permit was canceled you will not have a problem applying for a new one.

When does the extension you had end.

If your re-entry permit is still valid they will stamp you into the country using it. This could cause a problem.

There is greater chance of having a problem with immigration for not canceling your extension when your job ended than the labor ministry.

    Many thanks for the clarification.
Yes, the WP will have been cancelled.
Extension of Stay and Re-entry Permit are dated until mid-sept.
Most likely, I will re-enter after that time on a tourist exemption, get all the papers from the school and do a border trip for a new non-immigrant B.

What kind of issues could there be at immigration Bangkok when applying for a new extension? I'm quite sure my employer will be able to assist with this.

  8. Dear all,

I recently resigned on good terms from a major Thai university in Feb, having held a work permit (WP),  Extension of Stay (EoS) and Multiple Re-entry Permit (MRP) for several years.

As I was advised by senior staff (with decades of exp. in dealing with literally 1000s of WPs) at the school, they said I did not need to do anything and I could use the EoS/MRP until they expire. I'm aware of the standard opinion on this, but the staff were quite firm with me in assuring me it would not cause a problem...

I'm not sure of exactly when (or if) my WP was cancelled/handed back to the labour dept. Let's just assume it was cancelled shortly before I left.

I left Thailand mid Feb 2016, returned to Bangkok for a brief 3 week visit in April using my MRP and I'm now in Europe.

If I go back to Thailand to work, could this cause problems getting a new WP if it is seen the the Extension of Stay was not cancelled along with the old Work Permit?

    Specifically what problems?

    How likely?

And how to deal with them...
What is the safest way to re-enter to avoid any potential issues?

    Many thanks.
    MM

  9. Thanks Pib, and good news!

4 new technicians came along today, opened up the outside compressor and pulled out a big silver 6" capacitor array unit (looks like a big silver cylinder)- this was most likely the part that was changed by the previous tech. The new techs said that it was for a 3-tonne AC system, hence the reason why it was operating intermittently - it's now working!!

I used to be a telecoms engineer, so with some effort I could have faulted this myself, but it would have taken me a while to read up on AC system diagnostics and would have probably taken me weeks (plus buying a Fluke meter) to figure it out.

  10. From what you drscribe it sounds like there is no coolant in the compressor.....leaked out? Did your man check or top up?

First he changed a part in the compressor - I have the receipt but it's written in Thai..

    Still intermittent cold and warm.

Then, he checked the coolant and topped it up.

    Same problem..

Then, he used some sort of high-powered compressed air gun to clean it...

    Same problem,

And then, he thought that the timer function on the remote control was causing the problem (which logically would also affect my remaining 'working' AC unit as well if it was a timer function problem) - it's just a simple remote control and the timer is off..

    Same issue,

So now, he's offered to swap over the sensor with the working unit to test it.

I'm calling it a day I think at this point and will just get the office to appoint someone else to fix it...

    Thanks for your reply :)

  11. If you are using a handyman to fix an AC instead of a trained technician, then that could be your problem right there.

I mean if he's not charging you to change it bit by bit then fine, eventually you may end up with a complete replacement.

But if he's just using trial and error maybe you should talk to someone who understands LG AC units?

This was the first link I found in Bangkok.

    http://aircongenie.com/

I'm going back to the Juristic Manager tomorrow in the condo office to let them know that their AC man (or handyman) has not been able to fix the problem.

Yes, you're right - he is using trial and error and doesn't seem the type to simply say 'he doesn't know' - he's not charging me anything now, and just keeps coming back to try to fix it. Time to get someone who does know to work on it.

  12. Changing a compressor is costly...probably in the Bt7K to Bt10K (or more) for a new compressor. If your repair bill was not that high he did not change the compressor. Sounds like you really don't know what he did on the first visit. I find it strange he would do the cleaning on the second visit as he could have determined if a dirty inside and/or outside unit was the problem from the get-go.

The roughly 50% on-off cycle you described would probably only occur when not much cooling is required...like during cooler weather or having the temperature setting up around 28 to 30C. But in the current hot weather in most Thailand locations I doubt you are experiencing much cool weather during this hottest time of the year in Thailand. Mar, Apr, and May are usually the months a person experiences their highest monthly electric bills assuming they use their A/C pretty much year round (like me here in Bangkok).

Sounds like it may be time to get another repairman if he can't figure the problem out. The problem could be a wide variety of problems...compressor problem....incorrect freon level....electronic boards that control the cycling...etc. Sensors are very reliable devices but the electronic circuit board they hook to could have problems I guess. Good luck.

    Thanks Pib,

Initially, he took a quick look at the compressor, saw that the fan wasn't running and went out and got a replacement part (no idea what it was) which he charged 1200 baht for. After that, not much changed and the situation is as described above. He's been coming back and forward, playing about with the remote control, and then concluding each time it is working when cold air starts to come out only to find out later, when I call him that it is 'warm' again :) I feel sorry for the guy, as he is the handyman for this condo - I'm in BKK.

He's going to swap the sensor with my working unit tomorrow - if that doesn't work, I'll have to look around for someone more experienced I guess.

    Thanks.

  13. I have an LG Split Air Con System in my condo (well 2 units actually - one working well and the other intermittently) It's the standard vent unit-type attached to the wall indoors and the larger fan units outdoors.

It is blowing warm air most of the time, but the compressor comes on intermittently and blows cold air for a short period before reverting back to blowing warm air.

I've had a technician trying to repair it for days now.

The first thing he did was change the 'compressor'? Or he changed some part inside it, but it did not seem to have any effect.

After that, I noted how it was working: it was operating like this:

    1) Warm air coming out.
    2) Fan comes on for 10 mins,
    3) Compressor starts.
    4) Blows cold air for 7 minutes.
    5) Fan stops and compressor stops.
    6) Warm air coming out for 8 mins.
    7) Fan comes on (cycle repeats itself from step 2).

The technician then came back and cleaned both inside and outside units, top to bottom with some kind of powerful compressed air cleaner.

Now, it operates in a similar fashion to the cycles described above, except now, it is warm MOST of the time, with the compressor and fan OFF most of the time, and only cold for a short while before going back to warm.

The tech is now 'guessing' that it could be a 'sensor' problem and is going to swap sensors over between my other 'working' LG air con unit to test it.

Another point to mention is that in the short time periods when it does blow cold air, it is not as cold as my other 'working' LG unit.

Many thanks for any pointers in the right direction to solve this problem.
    Thanks,
    Des.

  14. Hi there,

I'd like to offer some info about my own experience since I've had sinus problems for over 10 years. I now have it mostly under control because of my research and efforts over the years.

The nasal decongestant sprays (e.g., xylometazoline or oxymetazoline HCl) often cause rebound congestion, hence I do not use them much at all. For serious blockage, I use a systemic decongestant such as phenylephrine (weaker - my preference) or pseudoephedrine (stronger). The systemic decongestants do not normally cause me significant rebound congestion but I still only use them for short periods of time.

The nasal glucocortisteroid sprays e.g., Nasonex (momentasone furotate), Flixonase (fluticasone furoate), budesonide, flunisolide, or triamcinolone acetonide all work on congestion for me, but sometimes they may not work if I have a lot of congestion. They are helpful for me and have an effect within 3 - 4 days. Tilting my head over the back of the bed for about 5 minutes helps the steroids get deeper into my sinuses.

A much more potent steroid is betamethasone sodium phosphate (Betnesol). This steroid certainly blows my sinuses wide open after a few days use. It comes in drops that can be instilled in the nose (again, I tilt my head over the bed for a few minutes to ensure the drops penetrate deeply). The problem is obtaining them in Bangkok. I have yet to find them here but perhaps Bumrungrad may have them.

What has really stablised my sinus problem is Western Herbal Medicine in the form of herbal tinctures containing a blend of effective western herbs. I use this when I need it, but I have to order it from abroad. For dry sinuses, which can often occur, Plantain and Eyebright compound has been particularly effective for me.

If you need to know more about the herbal stuff, please PM me and I will respond.

Nasal irrigation with saline regularly is also helpful.

Ylang ylang essential oil is something I also use from time to time.

Incidentally, my sinus problems mostly during damp, rainy weather.
