The author of the article forgot to mention the decline in tourism, due to high-profile tourist murders, beach umbrella bans, booze bans, and a general contempt for farang.

I can almost get behind government reform, but have very little confidence in the reformers. Is it the business of government, however, to "reform" non-governmental organizations or groups? A regulated free press is an oxymoron.

The current government lacks legitimacy, so it would be pointless to engage in any dialogue or debate with its representatives. The only suggestion is that Prayut and his cronies get out and return power to the Thai people. The current regime has brought nothing but shame and great loss of face to the country. Escalating unrest or complete capitulation are the only two paths set before the ruling junta.

"blackshirt militants" = government false flag operation to provide "justification" for the use of deadly force against unarmed civilians
Where are the dead blackshirts and where is the direct evidence linking them to the protesters?

The post should have remained vacant until an elected government is in place.Junta 'Willing' to Work With New U.S. Ambassador
By Khaosod English

BANGKOK - The Thai government is looking forward to cooperation with the newly-nominated American ambassador, a spokesperson says.
United States President Barack Obama nominated Glyn Davies, the former US special representative for North Korea, as the new ambassador to Thailand over the weekend. His formal appointment is pending an approval by the US Congress.
Davies' nomination follows a six-month vacancy in the post of US ambassador to the Kingdom. The former ambassador, Kristie Kenney, left the position in November, and the US diplomatic mission in Bangkok has been led by charge d'affaires W. Patrick Murphy.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Maj.Gen. Kongcheep Tantrawanich, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense, said he has been informed about Davies' nomination and told reporters that, if Davies is formally appointed, Thailand is willing to work with the new ambassador "for the sake of peace in the country and stability in the region."
"I insist that our government has a willingness to cooperate with every nation. We do not have bias against anyone," said Maj.Gen. Kongcheep, "Thailand is currently going through an important transition. The Ministry of Defense is working under the policy of the government and upholding interest of the nation as our basis."
Thailand has long been a major ally of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region, though the US government has scaled back diplomatic ties with Thailand following the military coup d'etat that toppled an elected government on 22 May 2014.

He knows what it means; he also knows he can't get elected in one."...Yet it seems like the drafters [Constitution Drafting Committee members] are afraid of democracy. Aren't they able to tell the difference between democracy and the Thaksin [shinawatra] regime? They merely believe that democracy can be used to pave the way for the [Thaksin] regime ... which needs to be eradicated," the former PM said in an exclusive interview with The Nation..."
I am amazed at this comment from Adhisit...a very sane and almost certainly accurate statement.
Irrespective of whether or not you agree with his politics, Abhisit is a very intelligent guy and, having been born in the UK, has had the benefit of an excellent western education.
Sadly, he is one of the very few Thai politicians who actually understands what the term "democracy" means.................

How does one invoke an article in a charter that hasn't yet been ratified? Kind of putting the cart before the horse, isn't it?

Straw man"Calkins noted significant opportunities for expanding bilateral trade and investment, stressing the importance of a predictable business climate and rule of law to trade partners."
Rule of law.....When the Shinawatras were in power......Not really. Now improving.
"He reiterated Canada's hope that democratic governance will be restored in Thailand soon through free and fair elections, while also highlighting the importance of a transparent, inclusive reform process."
Why "restored". Before the coup was no democratic governance and surely no free and fair elections.....

The problem lies in the fact that the Thai people are not being permitted to govern themselves. If they were, western powers would be fine with it.It just may be time for Thailand and the US to amicably separate. The US clearly does not appreciate Thai culture and governance. And the Thais equally have no understanding of US standards of accountability, transparency, and quality control. Let the Thais rule themselves as they want, with no interference from the US. And the US should simply shut its door to trade with Thailand. This doesn't mean Thais cannot go to the US or vice versa. But the two countries apparently no longer share any similar political values, defense concerns, or economic needs. I'm sure trade with Russia, China, and North Korea will make up for it all, anyway.

Thailand doesn't have a government, it has a ruling junta. Justice cannot spring from injustice.

How about getting the Thai people to accept it first?

It should read "Yugo" instead of Hugo. Damned phone is thinking for me again. There is a quote from an old acquaintance that goes, "I know a dead when it ain't one." I guess people should just accept any job offering starvation wages, poor and unsafe working conditions, and virtually no fringe benefits. It's like blaming the demise of the Hugo on car buyers. 555

full democracy means future governments will still have to tow the Junta line and follow the orders of the military or be punished. He said the European Union delegation to Thailand that had criticised the detention of civilians by military courts on Friday should try to understand that Thailand needs to maintain martial law in order to steer the Kingdom towards "full democracy" under the roadmap.
Whats "Full Democracy" then , I thought we already had that up until May last year
So its a kind of futuristic , highly evolved Democracy where peoples votes don't actually mean anything.
did they ever..in any country..

Im not sure if its a joke or that you really believe it. The army is firmly in power and the only ones scared are the red shirts. Not a peep from them they are either scared or they did not get paid. Probably both. The students are gradually ramping up the dissent. The parade last week, now this.
The junta will be having sleepless nights over what's coming next and how to deal with it!
A few students scaring the army. Real funny... if is was a big protest or nation wide maybe but just this is nothing.
This is definitely something. It wasn't happening before to any extent. How will your heroes deal with it if it gets a little more serious?
They will gun down protesters and lock up any survivors in re-education camps.
-
The Junta finds itself having to do a lot of "clarifying." It seems that everyone develops his or her own understanding and it is the Junta's job to ensure everyone has the "correct" understanding.

The military, of course. They will continue to run things from behind the screen of faux legitimacy, just like they are doing now with their "parliment" and "prime minister." Once they have done everything possible to prevent anyone with opposing views to participate, they will hold their faux election. It's time to start buying small condoms 555Who will punish the next government if it strays beyond this requirement

Thailand deserves respect; however, the junta is NOT Thailand. The junta does not deserve respect and it is not getting any from the international community, which has too much respect for Thailand and the Thai electorate to recognize the gang of thugs. As military to military , it is important that Thailand commands repect . In view of the recent disrespect shown by an American official , this briefing will help to clarify to foreign emissaries the intent and integrity of the Thai military government .

I think I just heard the fat lady sing. Reminds me of when the U.S. used the Mujahideen during the Soviets' foray into Afghanistan. A loose cannon despot snuggling up to the commies can't be tolerated. The corporate and strategic interests of the United States are being threatened. You do the math.

Don't be upset because the majority of Thai people love Thaksin and they don't even like you. You know better than the people and you are making great sacrifices to prevent them from exercising their will. Thank-you for saving the people from themselves, but bear in mind that they will never praise you for your efforts to "save" the country.
