  1. For me the centre of home media is Plex. Then Chromecasts on each TV so I can stream from Plex to any TV.

For TV series I use Sickbeard to automatically download my wanted shows to plex.

For Movies I use Couchpotato to automatically download my wanted movies to plex.

For Live TV I use iLikeHD plex plugin to watch the channels that iLikeHD supplies.

All in all it's great. Sitting at work my phone notifies me when new Movies or TV are downloaded and I can watch them when I get home. Then if I want to catch some sports or some other Live TV I just load up the iLikeHD channel and watch what I want there. Only missing thing is EPG for iLikeHD but apparently it's in V4.

Also if you pay for Plex pass you can sync things to your mobile devices. My tablet is setup to keep a certain number of unwatched TV episodes. It automatically downloads them as they appear in Plex. Then if I'm heading out and need something to watch I just take my tablet with me. When I've got a long journey ahead of me then a few hours before I'll just mark movies to sync and by the time I head out they're all on the tablet. Also you can access Plex from anywhere so when I was back in the UK recently I was able to catch up on my TV sitting on the machine in my condo in Bangkok.

  2. It's the Employers right to dictate the terms of the salary, not the recruitment agency.

People switch jobs for end number of reasons, not always due to salary.

I agree, my concern is that the agent has is telling the candidate that he should be expecting this sort of increase.

They wanted to handle the salary negotiations as they "understand thai culture", but it seems like a massive conflict of interest given they receive a nice commission on whatever the final salary turns out to be.

I just wanted establish if such a salary increase standard really exists and I don't "understand thai culture" or if they're just trying to increase their commission.

  3. 7% is not a lot of incentive to have a person quit their job to come and work for you.

Sure, if we were only offering that. But we feel a big incentive is the skills increase they would get. Thai developers lag behind western standards from what I've seen. We're prepared to pay him based on his current skills, but he would be exposed to a lot of things that would greatly benefit him.

But that's not my concern. If he wants to move for money over opportunity that's up to him. What concerns me is that the agent is lying to me, I'm just trying to establish if they are.

  4. Wasn't sure where to post this so hope I guessed right.

This to me smells like a scam for a recruitment agent to increase their commission; however, I thought I'd ask here.

We're trying to make an offer to a Thai software developer to join our team. The agent is insisting that there is a Thai "Standard Salary Increase" of at least 15% to 20%. Meaning that whatever we offer the guy should be at least 15% higher than his current salary.

To me this makes no sense, I pay people on their skills not on their previous salary. Where is the motivation to improve yourself if you only need to get a new job every time you want a salary increase? Frankly his current salary is already pretty good and we what we want to offer is only about 7% more.

I've asked some Thai friends and they all seem to think it's nonsense too. So just wanted to ask if anyone hear had heard of such a thing before I tell the agent where to stick it.

    Cheers.

  5. I gave a pretty comprehensive list of what was in there. I'm about to give the Thai shipping agent a call.

The only issue is I was meant to get my work permit today. But the agency the company I work for hired to sort it out seems to have stopped replying to my emails. So I don't know if I can start work tomorrow let alone collect my shipped items.

  6. Are they in your name ,or a Thai name? if they are in yours you may end up paying import duty ,tax ect

In my name. I'm moving here for work and should be getting my work permit tomorrow. As I understand it I'm allowed one shipment duty free under 1 year visa with work permit. At least that's what the rules on the Thai customs website says. What actually happens on the day is anyone's guess.

  7. Hi,

I tried the search but couldn't really find anything that answers my question so I thought I'd start a new topic.

I recently moved to BKK and arranged for two large boxes of items to be air freighted over. They were supposed to hang onto them for a few weeks in the UK so I would be in my new condo before they arrived. Well it seems they jumped the gun and I got an email just now to say they will be arriving in Thailand tomorrow.

I need to go to the airport to clear the items through customs and then get them to my condo. I was originally supposed to move in at the end of the week but i'm now trying to bring it forward so I can take the boxes directly to my new place.

    So questions are:

    1. How long can I leave the boxes after arrival before I have to collect them? Do I need to go on the day they land or do I get a few days to arrange things
    2. Where do I go? I spent a while searching the web for just where I go at BKK airport to do this but couldn't find a thing.
    3. How easy is it to arrange transport from the customs back to BKK? I reckon the boxes might fit in one of those estate taxis. Would a taxi driver take it or should I be looking for a guy with a pickup to do it for me
    4. If anyone has had to do this before how long is it likely to take? Will they have already inspected the box contents or will they wait for me to turn up before they do?
    5. If anyone has any extra advice on things to think of or watch out for, please let me know

Thanks in advance for any help.

  8. Why don't you bypass all of this crud and get yourself a USB aircard. Just put a SIM card in the stick and you are good to go. All the phone services offer deals and plans with them or you can just go prepaid for the internet SIM time and it is cheap. You will be free.

Is it unlimited and what sort of speeds do you expect? My network arrangements are somewhat complicated and I managed to leave my router with a USB port back in the UK so having to use my secondary one which lacks USB (and simultaneous 5ghz and 2.4ghz). So I'd probably have to invest in a new router that can be flashed with dd-wrt or similar. Worthwhile if I'm going to get the same or better bandwidth and data allowance from mobile broadband but not if I don't.

  9. Well True called back. It took a while for me to get my address across to them but when they looked it up they said ADSL only, up to 9Mbps for 599.

That truly sucks and I really hope they made a mistake. Will try to get in contact with the building management and cross my fingers.

Just found this page - http://www.central-hd.com/internet/true-online1.html

My condo is on there so hopefully True made a mistake.

True called back and confirmed cable is available. But didn't offer the 30Mbps package so I guess that's not available.

Oh well, at least I can get 15Mbps (max)

    Cheers to those who replied

  11. Who was "the guy" you asked? Best to go to the condo main office and ask them and then go to the suppliers they mention.

Some condos are restricted to single suppliers, some not, since they dislike too many different cables coming in to shared facilities.

Also some options from suppliers wont be available in certain buildings, especially fibre when coax cable is what has been run.

So first step get 100% clear on suppliers and then speak with the suppliers about your building.

Asking here regarding condo internet is going to get generic possibly wrong answers since you wont name your condo.

The guy was the estate agent. He said only True Online was available and then said I can get package with 12Mbps and TV for 699 per month which is what lead me to the 12Mbps cable package and then onto the 30Mbps cable package.

To be honest I had a feeling that the first question might be hard to answer; however I was particularly interested in the answers to the 2nd question regarding the 30Mbps package I'd found.

I've been on the live chat to true but it seemed to fall down when I couldn't give them an exact address for the condo. Just the name and road it's on. I searched online but couldn't find a "house" number anywhere.

I'll pop down to the condo itself and chat to the people in the management office and see what they can tell me.

    Cheers

  12. No word on the link as to whether it's a limited offer or not, but with competition and Internet prices coming down worldwide, I'd expect it to continue. Best check directly at the True shop though.

I guess my final question is what's the realistic lead time on getting this installed? This is a pretty new condo block and I'm assuming the line and everything is in place so it should just be turning on the service and installing the modem/router.

  13. The link you provided says the price is, as you thought, 799/month, reduced from 2547 'normal price'. For that you get 108 True Vision channels plus 3 HD channels (whatever they turn out to be). On the Internet side, you get up to 30Mb speed, but the starred note says that speed is only for cable Internet, and 'True H' 48Gb maximum (the starred note says 'details according to conditions' (of contract, presumably).

So if you want cable and all the channels and you think 48Gb data is sufficient per month, this is a good deal. I'd advise finding out what additional data will cost if you exceed the cap, and going through the contract carefully with someone who understands both Thai and Internet before signing up.

    Thanks for the reply.

The impression I got was the 48Gb limit applied to the mobile broadband part of the package, but perhaps it's an all together limit. This could be a problem, back home I was averaging about 120gb a month.

Be interested to know if anyone knows how long this price is reduced from the normal price for.

    Cheers

See my original post, I've amended it

    Ahh, great. Thanks a lot.

I'd be pretty hard pressed to hit 48GB of mobile data a month. My average is about 2 or 3 usually so that's not a problem.

I guess it now comes down to how long the price is reduced for and whether I can get it in my condo.

Will try contacting true and see where I get.

    Thanks for the help.

  14. I have the maximum True internet package for my apartment, costs 699 Baht per month for 7 MBS.

The maximum speed is limited by the quality of the True cable to the apartment block.

I am unable to subscribe to DTAC or any other internet services provider.

Check with your True office who will be able to tell you what packages are available for your apartment block.

    Thanks. I'll try this.

To be honest I judged their English language support based on the lack of English on their website which is why I came here to ask, but maybe I should have tried calling them first.

    Cheers
