  1. I got a wahl hair clipper at Big C hangdong. It is the stall just opposite the Bangkok Bank ATM machines (downstairs, so not inside Big C). It was about 1300 or 1400 and feels very solid and good quality old style, not cheap and plasticy like the new shitty ones that fall apart. I've had it maybe a year and have been happy with it.

  2. I’d heard a few people disparagingly say this ‘Grocery’ offshoot of Rimping Supermarket was “just another 7-11’

I have never heard this from anyone.

This is not the cheapest place to shop

Rimping has always had a huge selection, and the price of thai stuff is the same as Tesco and Big C in my experience, the only difference is that they stock a ton of quality imports also at reasonable prices (for imported food). It's an awesome supermarket.

  3. Hmm I wouldn't mind taking a look. I never thought to see if CMU had a gym.

Hmm can't find it with a quick goggle search. Anyone have a goggle maps link? I don't really wanna drive around the campus aimlessly trying to find it.

  4. Why would it close? It always has customers whenever I go and their prices, while not expensive at all, are not idiotically low like some shops who don't understand accounting and the concept of profit vs days takings.

I'm pretty sure they have another store also but I've never been.

Argh ... I hope they aren't closing on niman - the other store is probably far away making it not really accessible =/

  5. Here is a reasonable facsimile of the beast:

    wallet-made-with-genuine-elephant-skin15

I have no idea what is the actual material. But I would like to know the factory address and contact info.

For those of you who like to buy one wallet per decade, this is a good choice.

Of course you won't want to use this while wining and dining business clients.

This is for shuving in your tight jeans while riding

    Horses or dirt bikes.

Maybe there is a street vendor in Chiang Mai we can contact while looking for the actual factory?

    Thank you.

I have one identical to this pic sitting in front of me on the table - only its a nice brown instead of an old faded white.

My mate said he got one and that he proudly bargained down to 300b, and I thought leather is probably pretty tough and will last, so I bought one myself and the guy said something much less like 200 and I got it for 150 lol. My mate standing 1 meter away had that blank look that homer simpson often has.

Anyway, the next day I realised that either:

    1. its fake, so I overpaid and got ripped off; or

    2. this is Thailand, so if it's real, of course they would just kill animals for profiteering - and I was ashamed for having not realised this before purchasing it.

Either way, I regretted the purchase.

If you still feel the need to support this, it was from near the end of the east side of Asunarm Market which is an offshoot market street from the night bazaar.

  6. Yep, I have done that trail many times while getting in shape. It ideal.

I don't see why only 3x per week though - I did it every day.

And not sure what the rest is before coming down since down is always fairly easy especially after the up, just have to be careful of your footing to not slip.

I tend to start going about 15 minutes up the first time (focusing on going slow enough to not stop because the steep start is tough when you are not in shape yet).

Each day add another couple of minutes until I could get up to the temple.

    But yep - awesome trail.

    I second the idea.

  7. I don't know what people are complaining about here...

    backpacker-cute-woman.jpeg

LOL I've been backpacking and other backpackers sure as hell DO NOT look like that hahahah cheesy.gif

This pic is like asking why people think almost all farang men in thailand come here and "purchase" (or "hire" rather) a partner by paying for their partners lifestyle along with sometimes a monthly stipend, but showing the one single farang who has gone and met an actually educated chick who has her own job and pays her way.

    Just ... LOL

  8. God - half a day looking at wood carvings would make me want to carve a hole through my chest to remove my beating heart to end the agony.

Royal flora - some people might enjoy it but I can't get into it. How many times can you say "wow more freakin flowers - yay" before you just go postal.

Op Khan National Park is pretty nice. Though I recall hearing that there was something dangerous there - I think either a drownings or snakes - but whichever it was, I heard it was more than one time.

Night Safari is something I have always wondered about by never went, so that could be another option (assumable in the evening ofc).

Other than that, I would have to agree with this:

There is nothing in Hang Dong worth seeing or visiting that I know of.

It`s just an area that people pass through when on route to somewhere else.

  9. Maps, don't you think a lazy Fat body will at least make more of an effort to actually show up on a workout schedule with bookings are made in advance and prepaid sessions? Will he not push himself more with a trainer to motivate?

Definitely not. The committment threshold is quite high to see results here, and just showing and so you can think you are doing "more than nothing' doesn't come anywhere near cutting it.

I know people who think like that and then get a serotonin hit like they are actually doing 'something' from just organising to show up - but a serotonin hit won't improve your body. In fact it usually inhibits it because they are already satisfied from the serotonin hit from organising to meet and then are even less likely to put any further effort.

in my case, my condo has nice equipment but i have no idea of how to use the machines or even turn them on.i would pay someone to teach how to use the machines. the work, i can do myself. i rode at least 8000 km every years for over 40 years but in the last few years since coming to thailand, my exercise has fallen off and i have lost a good part of my muscle mass. i dont want to be a he-man, just healthy fit.

i asked at powerhouse gym and it would cost me $300 a month to do this. seems silly when the equipment is just sitting unused at my condo.

Yea that's a different case because you would just hire them a handful few times to go through the way to use the equipment, and then you can do it on your own after that.

  10. I was a fitness trainer for 4-5 years back home. So glad I changed careers. Clients who pay people to train them expect their money to mean they don't have to do the work (yes, every single one of them), and therefore never get results like some regular person who gets off their ass and tries to accomplish something by learning on their own and actually putting in the effort.

Money can buy you a lot of things, but it if you want to improve you shape - hand your green over to a plastic surgeon instead

Atleast by getting a (hopefully qualified) foreigner you avoid taking your life in your hands, and your only loss is time and money.

  11. Been here for over 6 years in CM and been stopped only for no helmet and not EVER for a licence check (or anything else).

Also I doubt the fine is over 400b for no licence, so it's never even an issue then.

  12. God these always fall apart so fast for me, even then ones that seem thicker and stronger - the threading just falls apart.

I have been here so long that last year I just ordered mac-in-a-sac pants and jacket (search "mac in a sac") which are great. They don't ship to Thailand though, so had to ship to someone else who ships to you here. Super thin and fits in ur bike compartment easily,.

  13. Holy crap, didn't realise Dengue was so bad to healthy young(ish) people.

Anyway, regarding repellents - the one from 7/11 with the pink label has always worked for me.

I was surprised since almost every other one I ever used did nothing, so if you use repellents, I recommend that one.

And after the replies to this thread I sure as hell will be using it very often from now on.

I am curious though as to whether it is true that it is spread by a "daytime" mosquito. I did hear that the one that carries it is stripped, but never heard about them being "daytime mosquitos" since duringthe day mozzies are so rare, but I suppose with rainy season there could be more of them even during the day..

  14. If you look around you will find several places with good hamburgers. Not on every corner like Farangland but there are quite a few around from plane Jane's which are nice when home made to the fancy Double whopper with cheese and bacon at Burger King or the big Joe's special with Bacon and Blue Cheese at the Dukes.

They just don't hang signs out you have to look around.

Never heard a fast food place called fancy. Is McDonalds also considered fancy?

  15. 1. "George Carlin great source for knowledge"

You are being sarcastic, but he a brilliant critical thinker who used FACTS in his show. You, clearly have no ability to think critically and your lack of education is evident in your post.

    2. "Buddhism is no different" (to other religions)

It is completely different the way Buddha taught it. He taught a way of "thinking". Religion is a way to stop people thinking and just mindlessly do what they are told. How you interpret that as "no different" is beyond me.

But yes, in Thailand, it has changed and "Thai Buddhism" is definitely a religion, but it shouldn't be called Buddhism since they do the opposite of what Buddha said.

Don't mistake the thai nonsense for what was taught by Buddha - which is the complete opposite of a religion.

Saying they are no different is ignorance.

    3. "Why people feel the need to put down some thing that brings joy, pleasure and meaning into other peoples lives is beyond me."

Religious wars, jihads, crusades, inquisitions, censoring of free speech, brainwashing of children, murdering of albinos, forcing girls into underage marriages, female genital mutilation, stoning, pederasty, homophobia, and rejection of science and reason could be some of the reasons?

    4. "I do admit I do have a problem with Islam. It has some practices I find hard to handle."

    LOL this his hilarious.

You defend religions in general, but have a problem with islam because the US govt has provided you with proganda to hate them so the US can go in and steal oil - and you aren't even aware that you have been manipulated.

What about christianity? How can you be so uneducated as to not know this stuff? Were you brought up without schooling?

Ever heard of the 'Crusades' where Christians committed GENOCIDE killing those who wouldn't convert?

Ever heard of Galileo by any chance? He was a genius and had a brilliant theory based on the FACTS of mathematics that the earth revolves around the sun, which was in conflict with the FICTION idea of the church that a "god" made humans who are the centre of everything and therefore everything revolves around the planet we live on. His friend who was kept prisoner for similar things was held prisoner for 8 YEARS and then BURNED ALIVE for it. This made Galileo see he had to recant his theories to survive, but even after that, Galileo was in home detention for the rest of his life for this until he died.

It is due to christianity that all science stopped for OVER TWO THOUSAND YEARS.

My god man, how is it even possible you don't know this stuff?

You should be ashamed for spreading your baseless, false rubbish. Get an education.

Get your head out of the history books. this is 2013 not 1313. I have learned to dislike some of the Islamic teachings in the last 7 years living here in Thailand. Over 5,500 people slaughtered including teachers being killed right in front of their students. The way they treat women is also unacceptable to me. It is not a man thing it is a religious thing. Of that is acceptable to you so be it.

If you knew any thing at all about the Iraq war you would know that France had more to gain than the states and it was just an ego trip under incomplete false information put out by three men in position to do it.And perpetuated by a VP who had millions to gain through his association with a private contractor. Not a dimer of it coming from oil.

As for George Carlin any one can pick out what they want to believe and find facts to prove it.

If you would forget your bias you would note I said Buddhism was like Christianity in that it had different sects the same as Christianity has different churches. I did not say it was a religion.

    4. "I do admit I do have a problem with Islam. It has some practices I find hard to handle."

That is honesty as seen through the facts I have seen. Just as George Carlin based his talk on.

You on the other hand laugh and use that old chestnut "well 1,000 years ago" blah blah blah

    Wow.

    Ignore all of history? Really?

When I mention to chrisitans who say they read the bible and I point out that it says in the bible to kill non-believers, they often lie and say they never saw it (and occasionally later admit they lied), and then they always go on and tell me of all the good parts of the bible and totally ignore what I pointed out.

No, you don't ignore the bad stuff and only look at the good, or Hitler will seem to be a great guy because he loved his dog very much (just ignore the "other stuff"). What kind of insane thing to say is that?? Ignore history??

Oh lets have a debate, but ... you can only talk about these 3 points relating to your argument and nothing else.

You might get away with saying this to someone who isn't too bright, but sorry to say my faculties are in tact and to even say what you said is laughable.

I don't even know where to continue, because when you say something like that, you are just sprouting nonsense, and I have to waste time explaining the gaping insanity of your points before even explaining the OTHER gaping problems with your logic.

I give up. You win by reason of me being unwilling to waste my time explaining illogical/nonsensical reasoning attempts.
