I wish the police would do a late shift and catch the hoons who scream up and down Huay Kaew Rd around midnight.
The bikes have modified mufflers, and are extremely noisy.
That is my absolute favorite stretch of road in the city to drive like an a-hole on.

I love the place I'm in, but the internet connection is so terrible (drops every 5 mins or so) that I'm considering leaving before the lease is up and looking elsewhere. Afraid I might run into the same issues at most 'budget buildings' (under 10k)
Anyone have a place they can suggest that has a reliable(ish) connection? I'm open to anywhere in the city

+1 Punspace - I went in there last week to meet a friend, very cool place. It's also free until next month. Worth a look!

One last question.. Visa expires on the 9th, which is a Saturday. What would be the best day for me to go? I know things can get hairy on the weekends.
Also, any recommendations on a relatively inexpensive hotel with wifi in Vientiane?
Thanks!

@ UbonJoe & Wayne :
Thank you! Great news, I was under the impression that I would only get 15 days... Ahh I'm overjoyed.

Hi Wayne, thanks for the response! To be clear, I'll be able to go into Laos via Vientiane and get a 60 day single-entry visa for 1900? How long will it take to be processed (overnight?) And the 30 day extension, when you say can be extended at immigration, do you mean in CM?
Thanks a lot for your help

Hello, in somewhat of a predicament, would love some advice from the pros!
Came to Thailand on a tourist visa (visa on arrival) which is good for 30 days (until March 9th)
What I SHOULD have done was sign up for language school right when I got here, but alas.. I waited too long. From what I've read it takes anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks to get the paperwork prepared for the edu visa. So now I'm in a bit of a bind.. Curious what my options are?
From what I've read, I can go to Laos and get another 15 days.. come back and hope that the paperwork is ready within the 15 days, then go do another run to come back on the edu visa (and pay the overstay if it exceeds 15 days)
or
Just was told that mae sai may be an option, and it's also closer which would definitely be nice seeing as I have to make the trip again for the edu visa.
Would there be a way for me to get another 30 days rather than 15 with a land crossing in order to ensure that I wont overstay while waiting for the paperwork?
Thanks in advance!

I brought my HTC Evo 4g from the states, only to find out it doesn't have a sim card!! (bummer)
Cheap i-mobile and local sim has done me right so far. Found out today that the maps on my Evo work off the cell towers even though I don't have service.. Score!

+1 for Pun Pun.
I've been out here ~3 weeks and woke up this morning with a hankering for a good old fashioned American breakfast.. Something HEARTY! Heard tons of good things about Pun Pun on here so I figured I'd give it a shot. What a gem. Opted for the super chicken friend steak breakfast (I believe)... All I can say is I almost didn't make the walk home I was so full! Big cup of coffee, OJ, chicken fried steak & gravy, 3 eggs, potatoes and french bread toast... Everything was prepared perfectly.. Great company too! Can't wait to bring some friends, I know they'll dig it as much as I did. John, if you see this, was a pleasure meeting ya- See you again real soon!

Been here a week, haven't turned it off yet!

Thank you for the info, guys
When I was 18 this would have excited me, however expats getting excited about getting wasted on the cheap, I don't know, seems kind of sad.
Yikes, need a friend?

Saw someone mention that there was an all-you-can-drink beer buffet opening tonight (I believe)
Anyone have any information? Would love to check it out!
Thanks

Check out Varada Place (just google them). It's just north of Huay Kaew in Chiang Phuek 5 minutes from Kad Suan Kaew. Google maps 18.79884,98.975148 the building that is under construction in the street view is Varada Place. I'm not a part of the business. It's a new building, small rooms but clean and reasonably well appointed for a budget place. I don't know off hand for a weekly rate but you can do a month all-in for under 6,000 baht. BTW - there is a small bar next door, more of a pub atmosphere.
Looking into it now, found their Facebook page. Thanks for the rec, Al!

Noise is no problem, I'm a night-owl anyways. Plus I figure it's only going to be for a week or so (hopefully!). I'd just prefer to be in a single rather than a dorm-style room.

There's no question that "normal" women are quite good at draining a man's savings.
fixed.

*NOTE I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH THEM IN ANY WAY!*
Arrive in CM on the 8th of next month. From what I could tell from reviews / youtube vids I saw, seems like a pretty solid little place. The price is right and the bar next door seems alright too. Anyone been here or heard anything about it? Will probably be staying a week or less while I look for an apartment. Friend lives in Chang Pueak neighborhood (sp) north of the city center.. Will travel to and from there be easy enough (Giant guesthouse 2 is near the south wall)?
Am also open to any suggestions! Needs wifi and hot water- Can be a shared bathroom but would like a private room. Cheaper the better but not interested in staying in a roach motel.
Thanks in advance!

I love that this came up.. As a hummus ADDICT I was wondering the availability of chickpeas and tahini. Will be arriving in CM on the 8th of next month! Thanks guys!

Sorry to hear about your loss Muchogra. Get the wife a new puppy as a surprise. She'll soon forget about not wanting any more dogs.
This.
Sorry for your loss, bud.

If a dog locks its jaw try to stick your finger up its anus. There are sensors in the interior of the anus which, when stimulated, cause a gasping reflex. And if the dog is gasping, its jaws can't be clenched down on your arm..........unless of course it has an iffy owner and is used to it.
Yikes.. Maybe I'll consider just lettin' it have the damned leg.

But you can not stay longer than 90 days on an ED visa regardless. So you either have to exit country every 90 day if you have a multi entry visa or visit immigration every 90 days for a new extension of stay. A one year visa only allows 90 day stays - only extensions of stay offer longer and for part time language study the period is only 90 days for extension.
Via the Language School's site:
With this visa (Non Immigrant ED) you will need to come back to us and we will apply for a second letter from the MOE certifying your enrolment, this letter allows you to make 90 day extensions at the local immigration office for the duration of the course. No visa runs are required at all.So is it true, that once I obtain the ED visa, I'll be able to get an extension for 1,900 Baht every 90 days and not have to do border runs as long as I'm attending school? Anyone have any experience with this type of situation specifically (with obtaining an ED visa through a language school) that can shed some light on their experience with extensions.
Pay the school now from your home country they will provide all the documents for you to take to the Thai Embassy in your country, since you are going to have to leave Thailand anyway, and you will probably get the visa for the length of the study ie 6 months 9 months, rumor is they may stop one year ed visas.
This is the easiest way then you come here with your Ed visa you do not need a ticket out and probably do not have to visit immigration for at least 90 days, maybe not at all.
I know it would make more sense to try and nail down the ED visa before going out there.. I've just got pretty strong reservations about enrolling into a school sight unseen. Finally found the page on the Thai Consulate site in LA that I needed (the translate feature on their site is broken, and the navigation is an imagemap.. doh!~) where I was able to confirm what lopburi3 said: I won't need to worry about having an exit flight booked. Seems the visa application process is pretty painless.
-
This is such great news. Thanks!!
-
You do not need any flight if you have a visa. For your ED trip you can do it on a low cost flight you arrange after you have the paperwork. You can study on the tourist visa until then.
Okay so just to be clear, once I get a 60 day tourist visa from the Thai Consulate, you're saying they will let me into the country on a 1 way flight? Everything I've read has said they wouldn't let me enter without an exit flight booked sometime within the time-frame of my visa. My idea was that I could hit 2 birds with 1 stone and have that exit flight be the low cost ED trip. What do you think?
