  1. There is also the matter of investment properties and capital gains considerations when leaving to Thailand as a non tax resident of oz. At the time departure, a Capital gains event could work in your favour or against you longer term depending on which choice you make.

This is another reason why the fully franked dividends can work better for self funded early retirees. No bad tenants either, but each to their own that suits their individual circumstance.

Getting good financial advice can be tricky as not all CFP's and accountants are that great with foreign resident tax determinations. It is well worth it finding a good one though.

Yeah I have the Kor ror 22 and yellow book/ alien card . They will not accept this alone. They demand a certified translation stamped by the embassy and Thai consulate to accompany the foreign marriage certificate. Unfortunately this has been the case the last few years. I do know of others who get away with just the Kor Ror 22. I am a FIFO worker so the multiple entry does the job with a 60 day extension on

    the last entry.

But you're not getting the tax free threshold of $18 200 as a non-resident.

Correct, but a 10% flat rate is not so bad for interest. It beats the 30% rate for unfranked dividends etc. A good accountant like Keith mentioned also helps if you can afford one. I cannot unfortunately with chump change I deal with...

You  can live anywhere you  want. If your not classed as an Australian resident  for tax purposed, you will be taxed at a much higher rate, if your income stream originates in Oz.

It depends what form of income is being sourced from Oz. Interest is a flat 10% withheld by the institution if you have advised them of your residency change. Fully franked dividends are the way to go as the tax has already been paid.

Phetchaburi Immigration is now asking for a witness as well.  They called my wife two days after we left our application paperwork at their office asking for a witness.  Supposedly Bangkok was the office making the request for a witness.   In addition to that they someone drive out to our house  to take photos of the officer with us and our house.  30 km each way.   This is the first time in 6 years that we have had to go through all this overkill by the government.

I've found that it depends on which officer deals with you in Phetchaburi. No consistency, but they always have been nice to me. It was easier for me this year to tie in an Issan visit and do a new Multiple Non Imm O visa in Savannakhet. I am glad i did now hearing this. The translation of our Australian marriage certificate is the major pain. Has to be stamped at the embassy in Bangkok for a ridiculous fee and then taken to the Consulate for verification. Every year the same. But its the price we pay to live in the land of love...

  6. Hello Gents,

I specifically applied for the Non Immigrant O visa (multi entry)based on marriage at Perth consulate last Week. Passport was ready for collection Thursday with approved Visa. It suited me as I was in Perth on business for a week. The visa Had to be approved through the Canberra Embassy as it was a multiple entry type . If you provide pay slips and a letter from your employer, bank balance is not so important.  The staff were very nice and very helpful in my case and suggested that I would be welcome to renew there next year. It was very easy . I'll probably extend in thailand however. The Canberra embassy will want the same documents I think. They want to know that the right people with the means to support their families and themself are visiting Thailand.

    Cheers,

    Mitch

  7. The whole system is one bullshit step after another, yet if you jump on a boat as a refugee, no worries.

About tourist visas leading to spouse visa etc. recently a colleague of mine had his TG out here on a TV for 6 months, the visa magically did not have a 8503 condition on it.

They had decided to get married some time into the visit. The visa was however due to expire. My friend put the wheels in motion for a partner visa, first they met with an immigration officer to discuss options on where to go next with the visa. They recommended , applying for a extension to the tourist visa until arrangements were made, this was done and immediately his fiancé went onto a bridging visa A.

My friend booked the wedding and was preparing partner visa application .my friend was very busy with work commitments and could not marry straight away. Meanwhile the tourist visa extension came through for a period of 4 weeks extra, but with one big problem, a 8503 condition.

A horrible outcome. They got married, however partner visa must be now completed offshore.

You could say my friend was too slow getting the partner visa in, but that's crap, it's the little germ in immigration who put an 8503 on a visa that originally had no conditions .

Anyway long story, but immigration are definitely getting tighter. Have all your ducks in a row early as you can. If your lucky enough to get a no 8503 condition, act quick

  8. G"day. I recently went through this process. My fiancé submitted application early sept last year with all the correct paperwork/ translations ready to go.

Within 1 week application acknowledgement letter emailed and case officer assigned.

After 12 weeks case officer called my fiancé for phone interview then requested medical and emailed letter for the doctors. This included her daughter even though she was not on the application.

Medical carried out and case officer acknowledged app is ready for the decision maker but may take 8 weeks plus due to backlog.

We waited 4 weeks, but my fiancé was heavily pregnant at the time so I called the case officer and pleaded that I wanted my child born here .

Decision received within a week or so. Just got her on the plane b4 she would be too pregnant to fly.

Married within first week, sent the partner visa app to Perth with the marriage cert, and that was granted within a week so I got her on Medicare.

I was very lucky. About 4 and a half months, so not too bad if you have a complete app and a bit of luck
