  1. Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread, and too lazy to go back and look right now, but I saw some photos recently of the Sunday roasts at Killkenny pub on LK Metro and they all looked very good.

  2. A good friend had cataract removal from both eyes, and mono-focal lens implants done at Bumrungrad less than a year ago. It was about 165K Baht including a single room overnight. If BPH are quoting 220K just for cataract removal, you now have something to judge what sort of a price that is against.

  3. Can you tell us more about the Sunday BBQ please. How does it work, do you chose your meat and they cook it while you fix yourself up at a salad bar sort of thing?. What meats do they have. etc

  4. Driving past Frasers a while back on a Wednesday and the daily special was Lamb Shank, so we pulled in for lunch. Don't miss it if it's available again, it was superb!. The steak special on Fridays is good too, we really enjoy the food there and it's one of the few places in town my Missus always orders Farang food. They also do home deliver locally.

  5. My 2 favourite shots were on a Par 3 at Eastern Star, I believe it's the 3rd hole, and it's not a hard hole by any means at about 165 yards slightly uphill to a fairly generous green. What made it so special is after having played with a slice (or controlled fade as some might call it smile.png) my whole life, after countless buckets of balls at the range I'd finally learned to trust myself to hit a draw of any size (from light to violent) and this Par 3 with the left side pin set itself up to perfectly for a high draw. 7 iron, put trust in all those practice balls, nice easy in to out swing, keep the head down through the shot, and it just got better and better by the millisecond as it flew through the air. My 2nd favourite shot was the 6 inch putt laugh.png .

What a truly great game golf is when any of us are capable of hitting better shots than the World #1. Just not as often!.

  6. I bought a frozen Canadian lobster from Foodland about 2 years ago. It was terrible, very watery. Don't know if I had bad luck, maybe I got one that had been thawed and re-frozen a few times or something. Never bought another one to find out!.

  7. You got that right kiniyow. Was at a Pattaya range not long ago that will remain nameless and a fellow dropped his 6 or 7 year old son off to have a 1 hr lesson from the Thai pro. They set up 2 bays down from me. The father said he'd be back in an hour and he wouldn't have been gone for 5 minutes when the *pro* started talking and playing on his phone, for nearly an hour!. I felt really sorry for the kid, he hit a good ball for such a little guy but he definitely needed some guidance and he wasn't getting it!. To his credit, the pro moved away from our area while he was yakking on the phone. He got interested in actually teaching the kid something right about the time the father returned to pick him up and pay for the lesson. Just so wrong....

  8. Have you tried the ground floor supermarket at Central?. Can't say I've seen exactly what you're looking for their but they do have quite a large range of Waitrose (sp?) processed frozen products, including fish. Don't know where else you could try in Pattaya, besides the places you've already mentioned. Tesco maybe?.

  9. You could try Homepro on floor 2 next next to Big C Extra on Pattaya Klang. They've got rolls of the sort of thing you're talking about that are something like 1 to 1.5 meters wide, I think it's called artificial turf and it's the sort of thing that would normally be seen next to swimming pools or on a patio. But being a golfer as well, I've thought about buying a length of this for exactly the same purpose you intend to use it for.

  10. A few of us played it today. Carts are no longer mandatory since the 1st of this month, so the sign says. All 3 x 9's are open I believe, we played lake-ocean. Not very busy but there was what looked like a society starting on one of the 9's as we were leaving. Not impressed by the condition of the course, particularly the greens. Never did like Phoenix and nothing has changed, but I hope the members who're being ripped off get justice.

  11. I wouldn't even know what his number was to report him. And anyway we're in Thailand, reporting him would have zero consequence.

Having a clear head now and thinking back on the ill-fated return trip, here's what I think went wrong: The booking part of it was all fine, and withing perhaps 30 seconds of the job going out the message came back that "we've found you a driver" (same as it did for the outbound journey). But with the outbound trip, I could see the taxi coming towards me on the App GPS where-as for the return leg, the taxi didn't move from where he was (close to Central Festival) on my GPS which I thought was odd. The taxi called my phone when he arrived to say he was outside and as best as I can remember, he didn't have a Grabtaxi sticker across the top of his windscreen like the outbound car did. So what *may* have happened is a driver in the Grabtaxi program might have accepted the job, then fobbed it off to one of his buddies.

What I do know is next time using this service, if the taxi that pulls up doesn't have a meter I won't get in it.

  12. I tried the service last night for the first time, from Jomtien to a bar in Central Pattaya then back home later. Much later laugh.png

Getting from Jomtien to my destination was fantastic, no problems at all and everything the App promises worked perfectly. The meter fare was about 72 Baht + the 40 Baht booking fee + I tipped the driver 40 Baht for a job well done which he truly appreciated . Rating: 10/10.

Getting home, the taxi didn't even have a meter and he wanted 250 Baht. I showed him the quote of something like 85 to 142 Baht the App quoted, and begrudgingly he said the fare was 142 Baht. Being well pissed at this time and in no mood to argue with thieving pricks, I paid him exactly 142 Baht. Rating: 0/10.

I don't use taxis much, have my own car(s), and my girl normally drives me anywhere if I'm going to get on the sauce. But I wanted to see if the service worked so my girl need not worry about staying up late waiting for a text to come and get me when drinking nights turn out to be later than expected. I think I'll trash the idea of using them again for a month before seeing if they can weed out the drivers that don't care about how things are suppose to work. If they can get them off the radar and have a large pool of honest drivers available, the service will do very well. If they can't get rid of them, it'll tank in no time.

  13. As far as the opening time of Long Range goes, it's normally about half an hour after sunrise. I go there often including last week at 06:40 and while there was only a skeleton crew that were mainly concentrating on cleaning, the range was open and they were serving drinks. Long Range is the best of the public Pattaya Ranges IMHO, and I've been to them all. The best balls are at Diana Range, but you pay well for them and if you're a big hitter you can clear the back net with the driver. If you can do that at Long Range you should be on tour biggrin.png .

  14. Perfect timing for this thread!. I need new reading glasses and was wondering if anyone in their travels around Pattaya has seen any optical shops offering 2-for-1 deals. My current reading glasses were from a Charoen Optical store that had such a deal going a few years ago, having 2 pairs but only paying for one worked out really well. Thanks very much if anyone has seen current deals like this that they could share!.

  15. Some really good information in this thread, I for one had no idea there was such a science behind all of this. Thanks to those sharing their knowledge, it's very much appreciated.

  16. She would go once, then complain bitterly after we leave and give me an ear full for a month about it somehow being "my favorite bar" that I will go to any chance I can sneak away.

    Not worth the grief!

What's she paying you to put up with that sort of BS?. Must be a hell of a lot, life's too short and it would take large bags full of $100 bills for someone to treat me like that without finding their arse kicked to the curb pronto.

But not to derail the thread, Mobi the daily musings of your bar are a great read!. Me and the better half (who's happy for me to do whatever I want whenever I want smile.png) often go for a drive out to the lake on a Sunday for a few drinks and something to eat. We'll be calling in for sure soon.

  17. Question please: Did you guys who've had UPVC done notice any significant reduction of outside noise?. The reason I ask is I live in a condo that fronts onto a road, it's not very noisy from the traffic but that might change in the future as Pattaya gets busier. So I was wondering about what (if any) difference UPVC might make. Thanks.

  18. Thank you for that information Mr Ives. Hopefully he can get some new business in the new location, since the driving range opposite his old location closed down he's been short on customers. I really like the way he says "thank you for your business" when spending money in his shop, so many people (Thai and Farang) could learn something from that.

  19. You'll be fine with just a tourist visa, many people rent condos or houses with nothing more than that (and the money obviously)!. If you've got a passport and the deposit, you're in. Also, it's a renters market so don't agree to pay what anyone is asking. Make an offer first, especially if you're looking at a 1 year lease, and you may be pleasantly surprised at how much you can beat the price down.
