So you're thinking, or they're saying, the drive contents are corrupted and they're using data recovery tools to look for and retrieve items of interest (and not trying to recover the entire drive).

Once a drive is so corrupted that you're stuck grabbing file-by-file as the recovery program comes across them in a linear search, your ability to recover a 'folder' content is lost (unless the recovery program is specifically designed to do just that).

Below is a question asked on the Apple Support/Discussions site. The entire linked contents is worth a read as it has several people contributing responses, listing several recovery utilities an their specialities.

Q: How I can Recover Mac Data from my Corrupted Hard Drive? (link)

Disk Warrior tries to reconstruct your Disk Directory from whatever is still there, and place a new copy back on the SAME drive. This makes the assumption that your drive is close to correct, and can be brought back to life. A subtle twist is that it will require many blocks to store the new directory, so it will overwrite a portion of the drive. It may not be the best choice for a badly-damaged drive.

By contrast, Data Rescue from Prosoft, can make a foray onto a damaged drive, and attempt to salvage damaged files. But it will NOT write them back to the same damaged drive -- it insists you provide a different drive on which to place salvaged files.

There are other Utilities that specialize in salvaging Photos or Videos off damaged drives. Most also require an additional drive on which to store the salvaged files.

Remember that you may lose file names in this process. And that a bulk saving of the drive could include over 350,000 files that comprise MacOS. Focus on your files, and specifically on the files for which you have no other copies. You can reinstall a perfect copy of MacOS from fundamental sources -- it does not modify itself. And the Mac will boot from any appropriate drive, internal or external.

Thank you for this. I think with this info I am set. Much obliged.

Why can't you leave the hard drive in the enclosure, take it home, and look for what you want on your own? Are they having difficulty accessing the drive data, the drive is bad?

If they have automated tools that can recover 'some' or 'most' of the data to a new drive, you could then take that recovered data drive in an enclose home and get what you need if it was part of what was recovered.

Otherwise, you're looking at forking out a lot of money for data recovery.

Thanks for responding. They were able to recover some things. But not what I wanted. I wanted what was on my Desktop and in TextEdit and Documents. They transfer what they got to an extra external drive that I provided and I was able to take that home. Then I saw what they recovered. I don't know if they could get more or more targeted data or not. I need to have another conversation with them. I am anticipating a lack of interest to do so. So I am reaching out here for alternatives.

What I get from research is that the the drive or the drive cable might be at fault. I have another computer of the same type and era and I believe the drive CABLE can be switched out. I will know more after talking to them again. I have been pretty good at backing up on external drives the important stuff. But I didn't back up what was on my desktop and textedit. I probably can live without this stuff and might try to.

    • My 2009 MacBook has the gray screen of death. I need tech help to try to get it running again just enough to download some files from my desktop and some RTF documents into my new Mac Book Pro via external drive. Right now I am dealing with a tech at Mac Cafe. But I am having some problems getting what I want and would like to get an informed second or even third opinion and possible help from them. Do anyone have any suggestions? Do you know of a 'go to' computer expert in CM that I could  talk to? Have you dealt with a place or a person that you were impressed with and could recommend? Thanks.
  3. There are laundry shops everywhere, so I wouldn't worry about expecting a maid to do laundry. Besides, the OP probably won't having a washing machine in the place he rents for the budget he has in mind.

As mentioned, cooking can be relaxing. Taste from Heaven restaurant on Thapae Rd. offers a good, half-day cooking school. The students get to select the menu items in advance. There's none of the time wasting field trip to the Thai market like with other schools. All their food is vegetarian and they don't use MSG. They'd honor special requests, like low sodium or no coconut milk, etc.

If the OP is living in town, he can also arrange for delivery from the vegetarian restaurants. I'd stay away from the prepared foods in the Thai markets if someone is striving for a low sodium, low fat diet. Too much salty fish sauce, msg, palm oil used in the prepared meals.

If the OP finds a laundry lady on his soi and spends a bit time learning to cook and/or exploring delivery options from the vegetarian restaurants, then all he has to do is have a maid come in a few times a week and he can focus on his art without having someone around all the time.

Brilliant! Thanks. Looks like a game plan. The delivery option is grand. Still cooking being relaxing? I wish.

  4. "Anyway, now most of those folks have recently moved on back home or to other parts of the globe and, it being low season, the crowds are finally thinner at my favorite eatery, so it now makes sense to let you all know about it".

That's mighty magnanimous of you.......worried it might close and you'll lose out?

My thought too. But i want it to stay open until I get there. Sounds good.

  5. Hmmm! as an artist who sets up art studios in various exotic places for indefinite periods,

I'm really interested to see the response you get to your post.

Doing Art in Thailand is a bit of a grey area. Plenty of writers, photographers, painters and computer artists or online designers do their art here but they best not call it work as it might not be allowed. Maybe it's in order but you would probably need a work visa even if you only export to sell in the west, especially as you want to be quite open and upfront about it. A house is much more discreet than a shop front. You can easily find a place with a big yard and outside but covered area so you can work outside even when it rains....And what materials do you need or will you bring them?

Had a friend who is a successful artist. He had problems getting his paints delivered here. I think it was Fed X. Maybe you can buy what you want here I know he couldn't. At any rate check around for the best carriers. Perhaps there is a thread some where here all ready about that. Or you could start a new one.

You're right about that Dolly. I think FedEx don't carry paints. However the art supplier in the USA knows which courier to use. USP, DHL, TNT, EMS ...some do some don't.

    Very Helpful.

  6. I am a 54 year old artist retiring to CM to pursue art as a "hobby."

I want to either make my own or have made cradled wood art panels to paint on. I am looking for the components pieces to do this. Where is the best place that have a variety of lumber products.

  7. I think you might need to simplify this post as it's a bit complicated. The title is off putting as hardly anyone will have heard of art panels.

Even in the west this kind of support for art is rare. You won't find the finished item. So as you say, you need to find the components.

If you ask where can I get veneers or plywood panels it might get a better response. Don't mention art in the title.

Then, where to find the woodworkers to make the frame might be a different post. Of course if you find woodworkers who know where to get the veneer and timber to build the art panels that's great. Let's see how it goes.

    Just my humble opinion.

Makes perfect sense. Lets see how it goes. Thanks.

  8. I am a 54 year old artist retiring to CM to pursue art as a "hobby." I will not be selling my art.

I want to either make my own or have made cradled wood art panels to paint on. I have used in the USA a thin plywood (veneer) like 4mm okoume Mahogany 3 ply, marine grade plywood or 3mm thick Russian birch plywood. I used basswood strips for braces. When first making them I used this website below as a source of info and was very faithful to the design and the materials used. The panels will be of various sizes. Some as large as that of the man is holding up. I know some expats have experience acquiring materials for their homes and have taken pride in having discovered sources of materials and/or good quality craftsmanship and labor. Any help or advice will be appreciated.

  10. It's one thing finding a maid, but one who actually knows how to cook (and can take dietary instructions) is a bit harder. Then you're not in 'Burmese Maid' territory, but you're more looking like hiring a Thai person who has actually worked in a restaurant. So then you're up to 8000 as a start, to make it worthwhile for her. And she still needs to be on board with not just being a cook, but also being a maid. So 8000 may be hard enough. As in the above post, I can easily see that creeping to break 10K

One other problem I see s it would seem he needs specific type cooking. it would be good to be able to speak enough Thai or get a cook who understands his dietary needs. He might find it worth while in the beginning to get a interpreter to make sure his needs are met. I see he isn't fussy but there are certain things that seem to be a no no to him.

As for wages to meet his requirements I would estimate 10,000 baht a month.

    at any rate

    welcome to Chiang Mai

Thanks Hellodolly.a Cook is not a deal breaker. Maybe I will get lucky. (my pen lie) and a housekeeper every other day will be fine. I know the ball park figure of what to pay. You guys are great. Lets keep it simple at first. I need to learn so thai.

  11. We paid our Burmese (Shan) maid 5,000 a month in our old 3 bedroom house in town, since moving to a bigger property with more rooms, carpets and a bigger yard we have incresed her salary to 7,000 a month, and she has free board and food.

Had many a Thai maid before her, all big dissapointments, and very lazy.

We have also helped our Burmese maid to get her Thai ID card, thanks to the help of "WE women foundation".

I hear to watch out for Burmese maids without work permit. To give work to them and to board them can be big trouble. What is the relationship between Thai ID and Thai work permit?

She has one, if you had read my post, and we are in the process of sponsoring her to get a full Thai ID. She is 100 % legal.

    Are you?

My pen lie. Chill. I was asking not accusing. As I am not now in Thailand I guess I am legal.

  12. Take a cooking course or search around the internet for easy, healthy, creative menus. Cooking can be enjoyable and relaxing. Have a maid come in 2 or 3 times a week to tidy up the place.

That would really be budget friendly. I might start out like that and see if it works. I have taught myself to cook Indian vegan dishes.. I don't find it fun or relaxing though. And I got a lot of "hobby" to do. My last task. I know some people think it is art play rather than art work but being highly creative can be exhausting. Serious artists need support to produce their art. And i am no young chicken anymore. This why i come to LOS to afford one last grand thing. This is my last hurrah before true retirement and art hobby. Still hoping for maid/ cook . I think cleaning every other day is an excellent idea and I can have laundry done once a week. I have to work within my budget. I will get as much info before my feet is on the ground as possible and then let things unfold. My budget is a little flexible but I am shooting for 1500 max USD a month. But I also need a workable studio. Maybe a shophouse in a reasonable neighborhood not too far away from CM center. I want to be upfront so I can get good advice.

go live at tacomepai near pai

15 rooms for rent in a beautiful setting. with creative people and i believe good cooks.Very rustic though

if not i can offer you a western standard cottage on 10 rai of land surrounded with lychee trees and singing birds

We have land next to this so my girlfriend could come in and tidy the place up

and yes we can do the low soduim diet to our taste

2 and a half hours North of CM

Sounds really good. Lets stay in touch. It is still awhile before I come in Oct. thanks.

  13. For a time, we lived in a shophouse in the central part of the city -- it had been totally redone to western standards with lots of granite, wood trim, etc. It really was luxe inside. We paid just 12,000 baht/month for it. I would think you could get something much more rudimentary for half that price.

I don't think you'll encounter any problems with doing your art on a retirement visa if you tell everyone it's a hobby. Which is really what it is when you're doing work on speculation, not advertising on-line or otherwise promoting your work in a way that connects you with Chiang Mai.

Thanks..Nancy. Makes sense to me. But sometimes things don't make sense. I am flexible. Thanks for the info. Very valuable. I don't need plush just functional with basic necessities.

  14. I live in the kind of place you would die for. It is 3 stories high and has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The main floor has a 20" high ceiling and is all white with plenty of natural light. It is not a shophouse although that is what I was looking for. I am a photographer and this is the perfect place for me. The rent is 10,000 THB per month + electricity. I am just outside the moat close to the airport. So if you take your time and look around good places are here and not too expensive. I found my place from an on line rental and for sale company so I knew the price before they saw me and I don't think I am paying a farang price. Good luck to you, Chiang Mai needs all the creative people they can import.

You are right!!!! Perfect. OMG! When did you start renting? Is this recent prices or old prices???

Blessings upon you. You have the set-up. Any other ideas of how I can get what you got? or something similar. What online rental and sales company?

  15. Lots of commercial type places will be unfurnished, no air-con units etc because the previous occupier will have fitted and paid for those items and will have removed them when moving on e.g. http://www.asiaprope...chiang-mai-9231 looks like it might be suitable for you at 15,000 a month but you will need to spend a chunk of cash making it habitable.

If you really want a shop house then perhaps the best bet is wander around your choosen area on foot with a Thai companion who can phone numbers stuck on the outside of units to rent. You will be spoilt for choice !

Valuable info. All of you guys has been sooo helpful. Thanks. Practical advice about wandering WITH a Thai campanion. Thanks again.

There have been cases where a Thai "agent" tells you that the rent is 15,000 a month but the owner is letting it for less. The difference goes straight into the agents pocket. If the agent kindly offers to collect the rent from you and pass it on to the owner this a bit of a clue wink.png

Of course anyone helping you will probably get a bit of commission (paid by the owner not you) but thats only fair and normal.

    Good advice and info... thanks

I can see that the cook thing might be unrealistic on my budget. I can eat out at the fairly large number of good veggie places. Still confused about what to pay if a person lives in as oppose to out. Living in I am paying room and board. I think that should count but how much. The other thing is that I am a single guy. A live in would be weird . I just don't see how that works with out a GF/wife relationship and I don't want that right now. But for informational purposes. What would be the price difference between living in and living out. Also are there people that are single and have a strictly business relationship with a live in maid with out benefits and can you give me some insight on how that is working out. (Maybe this should be a new topic?)
