  1. I have taken the PELT course back in June and actually I thought it was ok but I had previously studied a 60 hour TEFL back in the UK. I would recommend the full course because of the lack of observed teaching and the DVD's are well boring but apart from that the PELT course is well organized and well taught. I also managed to land a teaching position over 30K and it's outside of Bangkok and I have had positive feedback from my co-teachers so I think with the PELT it depends on the ‘person’ and also the first day in the classroom is nothing like peer teaching and that is the only teaching practice you receive with the PELT.

  2. Steven, I have read the thread about the PELT course and I have also read that TEFL International have now got their act together and have new offices in Bangkok. I would just like some real teaching experience without making a complete fool of myself and the PELT course sounds perfect.

Thank you Steven but Iam novice unlike yourself and you do really give good feedback and sometimes good advice. However sometimes I do think you can be a little hard :o

So Steven what do u really think about the PELT course? Would you pay the deposit if you were me?

  3. I have completed a TEFL course in the UK already and actually I have mentioned this before quite some time back on this forum. However now that I have booked my one way plane ticket to LOS :o I have been thinking long and hard about booking a place on the PELT program with TEFL International to gain some teaching experience as well a TESOL certificate.

So would you advice this? I was thinking about this because when I would start the two month internship with TEFL International, the school would already know that I have no experience in teaching English what so ever and I wouldn’t even have to lie about the fact that I have never taught before. I will earn a little money and I think this might help me not to make a fool of myself and also gain another and better certificate, as the TEFL that I took was only 60 hours and was actually quite useless.

So any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also does anyone have any information about the TEFL certificate that TEFLPLUS and Chichester College provides?

  4. You'll be fine finding some work in Bangkok at around the 30-35K Baht mark, maybe even more if your lucky or want to put in a few more hours!

Try to come ready for the end of (so plan to arrive late April early May to get used to everything and put yourself about a bit!) May or the early part of June as there's tons of jobs around then and you'd have to have some serious issue/problems not to get something.

I can probably help with you watching some teachers teach if you want mate? PM me! And also try and get a multiple entry Non-imm Visa before you come, again PM me and I'll tell you how to (although it depends on where you are?) with the minimum of hassle!

Kenkannif, I have tried to P.M you mate about your offer of help, but I dont think the message has been sent. Here is my email: [email protected]. If you could please send me a email I will be really grateful as I would really appreciate your help. Thanks Carl

  5. You definitely need to improve your spelling and grammer or you'll be passing on bad habits. You said you took a TEFL? Do they teach this element in their courses or is that an additional course you could look to take?

LOL yes I have completed a T.E.F.L course and my spelling and grammer is getting better, I have just brought a good book so hopefully it will improve and i am a good learner and most important I WANT to learn, as I have said before I am not saying I am a teacher but hopefully this time next year I maybe nearer to become a teacher than I am now. Everybody has to start somewhere and like many other people out there I just want to give this my best shot, I also know that many of you who are reading my posts think ive got no chance but if I dont try then I will never know but I am going to put my heart and soul into this so hopefully it work out and I am only 25 so yes I have a lot of learning to do. The point I am trying to make is that I want to do this for the right reasons and I think everyone who is a teacher now has been where I am now, so instead of taking the piss just think what you are doing to my confidence, I am looking for a bit of support not the piss taking out of me, so instead of laughing at me try and help me, there are a lot of people whos spelling and grammer is better than mine and who are teaching now in LOS but why are they there? for many they are just doing it because that is all they can do in LOS and couldnt care less for their students so are they good teachers? So please as i have said please just give me a chance and hopefully I will prove a lot of people wrong.

  6. Thanks for the advice guys, and I will lay off the !!! from now on. Well ive lived in Thailand for 1 year already, however im now back in the UK and I really love LOS, and yes I like the city life but im not sure if my teaching capabilities will be enough to cope with Bangkok, however I have a small problem, my girlfriend is in her final year at university in Bangkok and I told her last night that it might be better for me to teach in northern Thailand, She went crazy..........she said if I could learn her English and get her top grades, why cant I teach in Bangkok......so I just told her I have no formal EXPERIENCE and she just went off her head :o ......So you good "ajarns" out there... should I just hit the fire? and teach in Bangkok straight away? I dont mind 25000 baht a month from a school as my g/f has already got me a few privates lined up. But I still feel scared because I dont know if im teaching in the correct way........ so if any of you teachers on this board who are willing to let me observe you teach for a week " I will buy you quite a few beers for your efforts" I would be really grateful :D and also I know im not a teacher yet... but iam willing to learn and I really want to do this and it has nothing to do with that I have a g/f in Bangkok.......I just want to teach in country which I love. Thanks Guys

  7. Thanks Steven, I understand what you are saying!! Ive already ordered some books off the net for my spelling and grammer purposes and I hope they will help! I want to teach in Thailand because I want to make Thailand my home for around 5 years!! and I want to give Thailand something back! I agree with what you said about teaching upcountry as I was a little worried about jumping into the fire to quickly! However do you think after a year I would have enough experience to teach in Bangkok? and also I dont suspose you could give me some more advice? For example how do I find a job in north Thailand? Thanks a lot!!

  8. Hi to you all!!

Well this is my first post and I need some good advice. Ive just finshed a TEFL certificate and I am planning to return to Thailand around June time. However I have never taught English before and I have no teaching experience what so ever. So would it be better for me to start teaching in the northern provinces first to gain some experience or teach in Bangkok straight away? Or should I teach for a year in China first to gain some experience and then come to Thailand after?

What do you think? Good advice needed. Thanks
