  1. I know even that a group of European adventure touring riders was denied entering Thailand at the Cambodian border. That issue was apparently resolved by several European embassies demanding explanation, as Thailand has signed an international agreement about border crossing. Still the issue was not easily solved as the embassies had to issue a statement that the motorcyclists would not stay permanent in Thailand and some other strange demands.

I had no problem taking my Thai motorbike through Cambodia. You do however need to have your Greenbook with you for the paperwork to be completed, showing you own the motorbike. I do realize that these riders were going the other way.

  2. One advantage to upgrading now for free, rather than waiting to buy Win 10 later. I upgraded my old laptop to Win 10 and everything went smoothly, and everything still worked. Now I bought a new laptop, and had to buy Win 10 for it, in the US. Cost for Win 10 from Dell was $150. The purchased copy does not provide you with the drivers needed to run DVD's. These you must buy from the MS Store for $14.99. You get them free with the free upgrade.

  3. You can only get an IDP, (International Drivers Permit), from the country that you reside in. This is accepted as the country is which you already have a Driver's License. If you don't have a Thai license, they are not going to legally give you a license to drive in the rest of the world. An IDP is not valid in the country that you receive it from, so having one from Thailand would not allow you to drive here. However, you can receive a Driver's License here with a non-imm visa, but it takes a while, and testing. Hope this helps.

  4. If they clean up beach road I have no problems with that . But if they remove the local food vendors I also expect them to get rid of the 100's of prostitutes that are waiting for customers every night together with the ladyboys ,

I understand why you might want the beach road prostitutes removed, but I must say, thankfully, they are not aggressive. I would rather see the suit tailors removed.

  5. As pointed out above, they are always available at the festivals along Beach Rd. I bought one several years ago, and then threw it away. It takes 3 hands to do anything. One to hold the base, one to crank, and the 3rd hand to manipulate the vegetable. Maybe if it had a suction base it would work.

  6. I think Lazada is still in its infancy and will get better with time. Ebay was like that years ago and has come a long way since then. I like the search option, "Free international shipping", on Ebay.

But what about the taxes that Thailand imposes when buying out side of Thailand. I understand that you are able to avoid these by buying from Lazada. Am I wrong? I am thinking of using them.

  7. Try other banks first some will some won'tyou will probably need a ccertificate of residence if your area does them on a visa exempt someone there will no dought post soon.

to get a certified copy Ibelive that happens in Bangkok iIwould if you go down tthat route use an agent probably a lot quicker and a whole lot easier.

I agree that different branches of even the same bank will have different answers, (Yes or No). I would never, ever, ever, use an agent to set up my bank account, even with a gun pointed at my head.

  8. Is "D" drive your DVD player? In February I went back to the states, ordered a new Dell, got back to Pattaya with it, and my DVD player works with Music CD's, but not with DVD's. I finally found out that Microsoft does not include the drivers for DVD players with new copies of Windows 10. (This news is online if anyone doubts this.) Microsoft will sell you the DVD drivers, through their Microsoft Store download, for $14.99. I guess Microsoft is very jealous of the money that Apple generates with their store. Sad but true.

  9. Just be aware that a car license will not allow you to drive a motorcycle. You will also need to obtain a motorcycle license. The car license, with the IDP, will make is easy to get the car license, but it can involve several days to get the motorcycle license. Congratulations of knowing to take some lessons on a motorbike. Easy to make friends here and find someone to give you lessons. I would pick an educated falang for a teacher, not a Thai, even though there are a lot of bad falang motorcycle drivers also.

  10. Off topic, sorry, can not resist tongue.png

Set up on Soi Bhoakow (spelling?)

Soi Bua Khao (white lotus "road").

An "English" transcription would be: bua kăao

I will add Bhokaow to my growing ollection:

Bouakao Buakhaw Buakaow Boycow Buakhow Bukhao Bukow Bukaew Bokhao Bokhow Bhoakow

So true. I have seen most of these.

  11. I have discriminating taste in several areas. Unfortunately, yes, I think to many people that makes me a snob. Oh well.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

As a former Professor of Wine in your old stomping grounds of Napa & Sonoma, I have found bad bottles of wine at $5,000 a bottle, and some great bottles of wine at $7 a bottle. As everyone has different taste buds, it is just important to find a wine that you enjoy, regardless of price. In my annual wine competition, (1800 entries), you would be surprised how many inexpensive wines do quite well. Wineries that produced 15,000 cases a year, and know they can sell it out each year just through their tasting room and fan club, can charge $45 a bottle, and those that produce 150,000 cases a year need to be more realistic in their pricing. Doesn't mean they make a poor wine, just that they have a lot to sell. All we ask is that you drink a bottle a day!

  12. Wonderful day. Went to Jomtien Immigration today at 2pm. I did my 90 day report, and my one-year extension. No one in front of me. Window to window, then in 10 minutes I was on my way home. I will return tomorrow after 2pm to pick up my Passport, which is no big deal. Thanks Immigration!

  13. Not sure what you mean by "all" want to drink, as this is not the case.

My wife, and several of her friends, who are nurses, doctors, teachers, etc...do not drink at all (alcohol). They are not "High Society" but rather just professional types. Back on the farm, most females in her family drink excessively. They drink until they are out of control. My wife can't drink even half a spy...without becoming ill. She doesn't even try.

Many foreigners, such as myself, were alcoholics, needing to drink at every opportunity. When you get my age, health becomes a concern, and I was forced to change my ways. I know lots of guys who are the same. I do relapse once in a while (every few months) but I suffer greatly afterwards.

It catches up with you...for sure. I am happy my wife and her friends absolutely do not drink, as it makes it easier for me. They still laugh, dance, and manage to enjoy good times. We live comfortably distant from her relatives.

I suppose ladies who work in bars all drink...can't argue with that.

I drink, but would also get sick on 1/2 of a Spy. Looks nasty. Your wife is a lady.

  14. I see you have a primator in your pic isan farang.

Now that is an excellent stout.

As for the beer Lao regular yes I have tried it and it's good.

I swap and change a bit with my beers. At the moment I'm either drinking a tiger or a Leo but I vary a bit so I was just looking for more dark beers from Thailand or around the region.

Looks like the darker styles aren't so popular with the locals.

    Thanks

I agree. I am not sure why "dark beer" is not so popular here, but it wasn't in the states either. 45 years ago I would enjoy dark Michelob, but I don't think Bud makes it anymore. I really enjoy the dark beer Lao.

  15. There will some sort of guest house or home stay on the ground but I doubt you'd want to stay there... that's a proper backwater border crossing and gets very little traffic indeed. Why Kamrieng? Staying in Poipet (and then going back in at Poipet and travelling inside Thailand) would be much easier; though Poipet is a bit of a dump. Battambang is nice and you can find something cheap. You'll almost certainly need a taxi to the border from either Poipet or Battambang.

I did not go to Poipet, but if it is worse than Battambang, I can only say "WOW". I rode thru Cambodia on my motorbike 3 years ago. Battambang streets had 2 feet of trash everywhere. I did find a new, cheap, hotel, outside the city that will have someone guard your bike from theft 24/7.
