Cannot do it without the owner having a current visa! Crazy!

When I went to Laos I needed a 'bike passport' which I think is really just translation and verificatio of the green book - @100Bht from local DMV.

Great blog Chris. It deserves an airing on one of the dedicated rider sites like 'Rideasia'.

I got pulled with an out of date IDP. First the cop wanted 500, os said it would be 1000Bht at the station. Unwilling to line his pocket and give him anything out of it I demanded a ticket. He gave me one saying OK, you pay at station, 1000Bht - it was 300!
High figure is just a scare tactic????

I used to renew my Tokyo Marine insurance through the Honda dealer in Huay Keow Rd.

I renewed the tax on my Phayao registered CRF in CM for 6 years. Then transferred it to a Thai friend in case I needed him to sell it for me. Only time I needed a residency cert was to register it. And that was a CM cert but it was registered in Phayo.
-
I remember it, but in Thailand, leave an inch of space, blink and there'll be a scooter in it;-)

My CRF was Phayao registered, I wanted to transfer it to a Thai friend in case I did not return and needed him to sell it. Simply went to Chiang Mai Reg office with my signed permission form and VALID VISA, he with his house book, and they did it for around 500Bht. The visa was the reason for transfer as if I wasn't there with one it couldn't be transferred, another crazy Thai rule, just about every other country requires and encourages the new owner to have their name on the documents!

I put an aftermarket exhaust on my CRF250 and it sounded vile and robbed even more torque. I then had a local metalworker gut the cat and silencer then replace with a straight through centre pipe and wadding. Sounded great, nice and deep note BUT the main gain was MUCH more torque and still the increased top end with the nasty exhaust.
I then had the engine modded to CBR300 spec including injection system and got the same torque increase again. Now a completely different bike and I love it;-)

I've never had a problem. I make sure I point out the bits like the chain not to point the pressure washer directly at.

What's the definition of a highway? I've ridden all over the North from CM including many dual carriageways (although I usually try to avoid them) without any problem.
-
The 'talking to yourself' is part of police driver training, saying all the hazards you see out loud. I often try it while riding my bike to stay alert.

I prefer a flip up full face. Good protection on the highway and if I have to stop at lights in town I can just open it. Raised piece acts as a sun shield if you have to stop facing the sun;-)

Typical government rhetoric in response to a few high profile accidents on big bikes, I think most involve Thai riders. The majority ofdeathsare small bikes thrashing around without helmets. As far as I knew there is already an 80kph limit for EVERYONE in built up areas.

I had the same problem getting anyone interested in doing the valves on my CRF in Chiang Mai. They just can't be bothered with having to order shims from Bangkok.
-
I insured my CRF with Tokyo Marine through the dealer, seemed reasonable.

Any vehicle loses depreciates the most in the first year so keep what suits you -do the math as the Ynks say! Most of mine ere o er 20 yrs old so barely depreciating or even appreciating as classics.

There is built in obsolescence in everything to keep us mugs spending money. The 'car scrappage scheme' here in the UK proved that. It' much more economical and environmentally sound to run a slightly less economical vehicle to the end of it's life but that wouldn't keep the capitalist system going!

Not a good idea if there are no papers at all, but if the green book is there no problem. Due to the crazy rule not being able to change owners without a valid visa for Farangs there are hundreds of ex Farang owned bikes around.

I have been insuring my CRF250 with Tokyo Marine, seem to remember it being @ 5kBht.

Im on a METV. I've been in country a while and have been told a few times that I need to get a license when I was stopped.
If an METV is atourist visa, don't you have to do a border run to renew it every 60 days?
Therefore you are not in the country for more than 60 consecutive days so an IDP should suffice.

Hi
In Chiang Mai I bought my bike with a tourist visa and got a cert' of residence from immigration.
To sell you need a visa of some sort, but I didn't need a cert' of residence.
This crazy rule means a lot of foreigners just leave the bikes in their name and they never get re registered, which seems to be accepted To make things easier I transferred it to a Thai friend before I left in case I couldn't return and needed him to sell it.

Hi Again
The original info is on Ride Asia, specifically :-
https://www.rideasia.net/motorcycle-forum/threads/crf-mods-and-improvements.2338/page-3
Note the comment by 'TwoWheels' below my post. My comments on the gears said 'as low as 3rd now 5th 6th' that is I can use 5th instead of third. Now no need to change sprockets.
Didn't remap, just fitted the CBR 300 throttle and corresponding ECU, plug chops firn and been OK for 000's of Ks.
Somewhere in that thread about the other work - including repairing the indicator and making a shield for it!
Removed the snorkel but kept the original filter - gets clogged real fast in dusty conditions.
Have fun, Tim

The best thing I did was have the original exhaust 'gutted'. It was 1000Bht, sounded good, not too loud, doesn't get a second look from plod or border guards abut it made an unbelievable difference to the low end torque. The gap between 1st and 2nd is no longer a problem off road and whereas previous rides up the 118 to Chiang Rai had seen the need to drop down as low as 3rd gear now I can do them in 5th &6th .The top end is as good as a previous 'sports' exhaust which killed the low end torque and sounded vile and embarrassing.
Then did the CBR 300 upgrade which made the same difference again but was obviously a lot more expensive. Well worth it all, now for solo touring I really don't need a bigger bike, now had the CRF over five years;-)

New battery for CBR 150 R(2014)
in Motorcycles in Thailand
Posted
Quite possible. I had a battery die suddenly but I was due to set off for a rally so I bump started the bike and went. When it was time to go home, the bike just started, reluctantly then ran badly and wouldn't stay running. Reckont he bad battery was taking all the charge leaving none for the ignition.
