One black sheep doesn't make the whole family bad
Do decent families have jailbirds and drug dealers in them these days?Sister in law next door to the right, was married to UK guy but he has bailed. Teenage daughter. Great people, like a real sister to me.
Parents in law next door behind us. Great people, like real parents to me and most importantly real grandparents to my daughter from a previous relationship. Cannot speak highly enough of them. Hard working decent people who have been excellent parents to 7 children.
Sister in law next door to parents. Interesting lady, first born and has spent time in prison (ex husband a drug dealer, still inside), makes her quiet and keeps to herself.
Brother in law who stays with various of the above. Nice bloke. Part electrician, part plumber, part carpenter and builder. Keeps all of our places working and we feed him. Drinks too much and keeps hurting himself in motorbike crashes. But is only trouble to himself.
Various aunties and uncles close by. Some good some bad but they don't really affect us.
I love it.

Where can they get the original samples and not planted ones? All hopes are that the Brits got their own DNA samples and this would put the lives of two Burmese out of danger if they are really innocent, but it's as far as this case will go. The real killers will never be catched.

I agree that Thailand needs to sort out its own problems
But to expect the world to turn a blind eye to it, is just plain naive. One of Thailand's biggest sources of income is foreigners in the form of tourism, so foreign governments have a right to make and pass comment.
And as part of ASEAN next year - with its binding joint agreements and common policies - which will come into effect, this interference will increase.
You don't invite someone into your house and then complain when he says something you don't like
Will the other asean countries still allow Thailand to join if there isn't a stable government by next year?

I also have noted many Farang's commenting on the swastika displayed on Thai tee-shirt and other places and attributed it to Thai ignorance of western suffering.
Educated people should understand that sign has been used for centuries by different peoples over the history of man for religious purposes.
It is widely used by Native American tribes in the US, another people that suffered greatly by the arrival of westerners to their lands and the holocaust that reduced their population from 16 million to the current two million population today.
There is a more historical perception behind the meaning and use of the display of the Thai swastika than that of the Western perception and or experience.
Cheers:
So are you saying if I see a thai wearing a nazi tshirt with a picture of hitler on it, you still think its a symbol of thai Buddhism?
Most people from the west have a problem with the nazi symbols floating around, not the traditional religious symol

There is no way to teach English to Thai students without a Thai interpreter first.
Next time you go in, maybe try printing out a series of maybe 6-8 pictures. Bluetac a picture to the board and write the word under it. Get the class to repeat after you as you say the word until they are saying it correctly. Do the same with each picture, and keep briefly referring back to the previous ones each time aswell. When they are all up on the board, just point at each so they say it, wipe out the words once they know each, so just pointing at the pictures.
You're then 80% of the way towards having taught them the vocabulary. You just need to get them to work each item into relevant sentences (e.g. Can you pass me a fork? Yes I can/no I can't) using games/activities to assist them with retention.
For all of your instructions to the students, try and use body language to assist with communicating your English instructions. They might find some things difficult to understand at first, but they'll work out the meaning from your body language (some treat it as a bit of a game anyway lol, where they race to translate what you said into Thai for their friends lol). Over time they will passively learn the various "teaching language" you use, especially if you initially follow a bit of a pattern with your lessons so they sorta expect what you're going to say anyway.
Also don't expect them to know anything which you haven't taught them yourself. And give quick revision sessions of previous lessons at the start of each class. Ideally if you can, have each topic build on content from a previous so that they get extra practice, as repetition is key.
Anywho hopefully that's of assistance, there are other ways to teach but this is an easy way to do vocabulary.
Great post Sly.
What about when you get to words like - can, but, because, want etc.
How would you get students to understand what you are trying to get across if you have zero Thai language skills?

It took me 25 years to escape Farangland, now it appears Farangland has followed me here.
How many farangs now living in Chiang Mai? Too many.
Hope they raise the visa extension money requirements by about 400% and cut down the numbers.
How many Farang would you estimate to live permanently in Chiang Mai?No numbers, but too many.
So if you two went home, the problem would be 2 less problem farangs ?!?!?

I'll even buy the drinks

Thanks for the reply Kimomax.
I think i'll book the Diamond Park Inn Chiang Rai Resort. Location is great and the price is 1270b on Agoda.
Thanks for the music info also, it should keep me busy for a few nights.

Firstly hello. I have been having a look around the forum and have found some great info so thanks guys.
I'll be in Chaing Rai and Chiang Mai for 4 nights each in Feb.
I am trying to decide where to stay in Chiang Rai. I don't like staying right in the nightlife area but within walking distance.
One must-have is a balcony, I hate staying in an enclosed space while on holiday. A pool would be nice but not necessary.
Otherwise clean, reasonably modern and in the price range 1000-1500b a night.
2 that look ok are "Nice Inn Town Residence" -Agoda and "Chiang Rai Central City Location Condo" -Tripadvisor (i cant post links here)
Which of these would you recommend or any better suggestions?
Also i like watching live music, preferably rock/blues. Even Thai rock music is fun, i went to Luk Nam pub in Hua Hin recently and loved it.
Any live music venues anyone can recommend?
Thanks,
Sydman.
