  1. I would not call 625k 'cheap' for a car, it's bloody expensive for what it is

Using the Yaris as a comparison, as not all markets have the saloon version:

    A Base 5-door 1.3L Yaris 5MT costs 750K Baht in UK

    A Base 5-door 1.5L Yaris 4AT costs 510K Baht in the USA.

    A Base 5-door 1.5L Yaris 4AT costs 556K Baht in Australia.

    A base 5-door 1.5L Yaris 4AT costs 590K Baht in Thailand.

Only Americans could really complain, but everyone else in the looks at American car prices and weeps....

Am I correct in thinking that the Yaris and Vios are made in Thailand?

  2. I have ordered a new model Toyota Vios G spec for my wife. Just found out a friend of mine has had an E spec Vios for nearly 2 months now and is selling it because he said the fuel consumption is redicliously high.

I was wondering if anyone has recently purchased a new model Vios and how they are finding the fuel consumption?

The car is only used for town driving.

  3. You can do a change of visa status to a non-o at immigration.

If on 30 day visa exempt you must have 21 days remaining on your entry.

Thai immigration web site click on change visa and click on button that applies.

    Link: http://www.immigration.go.th

Also check the visa extension section for more info.

I only have 11 days left on my visa, I have been told it is very difficult to change my tourist visa to a Non O so it is easier to just leave the country one time and get a new visa.

  4. I am currently based in Chonburi due to business commitments, I have recently got married to my long term girlfriend and am due to renew my visa this month. I am going to get a Non O and extend it (my wife makes 40000 baht per month and pays tax) Before I used to go to Loas for my visa but that is a long way to travel.

Is there a embassy in Cambodia that will issue a Non O easily like Loas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  5. 1. conversion is 2000 baht.

    2. Yes

    3. Do it well before, don't wait till the last minute. If something isn't right you will have time to sort things out. Get a letter from the educational instituate that you have/will enroll. The institute will now what is required.

    4. Conversion can be done in Thailand at any immigration office.

I have just been to the Thai school and they have told me I have to go to Loas to get my ED visa, they have said I cannot change my Tourist visa to a ED visa inside Thailand. Is there anyone who has managed to do this?

  6. I currently have a tourist visa which I want to change to a ED visa. I am 35 and do not work so cannot qualify for any other visa. I have done research on the forum but need clarification on a few points.

    1. Can it be done and what are the costs?

    2. My visa is valid until the 18th sept. Can I extend it for 1 more month so I am permitted to stay until the 17th Oct, then apply to have it changed.

    3. 21 days before this expires (approx the 25th Sept) I apply to convert my tourist visa to a ED visa and enrol in the appropriate course?

    4. Do I have to leave Thailand and go to a embassy or consulate to get the ED visa or can it all be done here?

Thanks in advance for any advice and help.

  7. Your application was made before October so you are grandfathered and can use the 400k deposit method. The money should be in the bank 3 months prior to the application for renewal (which is normally about 3 week prior to permitted to stay date. They may not be strict on this 3 month requirement the first time but it is best to be safe (especially as this is a grandfathered provision). Otherwise the requirement is 40k family income.

No you do not have to travel. You extend under the same procedure you used this year. Remember that if you do travel outside of Thailand you must obtain a re-entry permit first to keep your extension of stay alive.

The fine per day is for visa overstay. You have not done that.

Thankyou so much for your help, I did make the application on the 12 sept, but was not granted it until the 12th Oct, will this still be ok? As I dont have any family income, I am 33 but do not work, but just want to send over the 400000 baht 3 months before.

If I leave Thailand do I just go to immigration and get a re-entry permit before I go, I am not planning to go anywhere but you never know.

Thankyuo again for your help, I can enjoy my food now was getting a little stressed.

  8. The fine is more likely to be 2,000 baht. And yes, you have to make 90 day address reports on any extension of stay when you do not leave Thailand for during a 90 day period. Your application for the extension of stay was day one.

My application was 1 month earlier so that will mean I am nearly 2 months over. I will have to eat some serious humble pie. :o

While I am on the subject can you or anyone tell me when this visa runs out in June, do I just transfer the 400000 baht over here 3 months before and then apply again in the same way to immigrantion just before it runs out, or do I have to go back to the UK and get another non B visa, come back and then extend it again on the basis of marriage? Basically can I extend indefinately without leaving Thailand as long as I can show the funds in the bank?

Also will the fine just be 2000 baht I thought it was 500 baht per day up to a maximum of 20000 baht or am I just being thick again?

    Thanks again.

  9. Hi.

I have a non B visa which I extened on the basis of marriage. It says where they have stamped it i am permited to stay in the kingdom till June 21st 2007.

I have just been speaking to my friend and he says that he is sure I have to report every 90 days the same as he does with his retirement visa.

I have never read this before and was not told at immigration that I had to go back after 90 days.

Can someone tell me if this is true or not?? I am now nearly 4 weeks over the 90 day time frame.

    Thanks in advance.

  10. David "the Duke" opened a restaurant in Chiang Mai in 1991 called The America Restaurant and I'm pretty sure that I was his first customer. He stuck around for a year or two and then sold his restaurant to Tony Moon and returned to San Diego where he ran a series of restaurants over the years.

He returned here about a year and 1/2 ago and opened The Dukes which he has been running ever since.

The word on the street is that he will open another place soon and I am looking forward to it! :o

He is opening a place at the night bizzare near to mcdonalds if my sources are correct.....I love the food at dukes.

To the OP. You say your friend wants to come here for 2 years before he moves to France......why does he not just come here and relax for the 2 years and live of the 1.5 million baht maybe even add a little more as you say he has plenty of cash?

  11. Does not give me a raging hangover like Thai beers.

Is it ok to say this :D

    No it's not.

You are insinuating that Singha does give one headaches and tastes like <deleted> and I dispute both statements. :o

    Ulysses Grant

Chairman of the Board, Singha Industries

sorry but I stand by my statement (for me anyway, gives me the worst headaches).....dont even get me started on Chang :D

    Ulysses Grant

Chairman of the Board, Singha Industries

    Chairmam mao ?

    :D

    LMAO :D

  12. Well I think beer lao is way ahead of all the other beers..................I have no commercial interest in this beer what so ever, I just happen to know where you can buy it and who sells it. But I would like to see it more readily available.

Does not give me a raging hangover like Thai beers.

Is it ok to say this :o

  13. I was in Samui (lamai) recently when a guy passed selling Beer Lao apparently he owned a bar in Nana and had now started to sell/ditribute Beer Lao in Samui. The bar that I was at sold it at the same price as a Hein... they bought it at 40THB per bottle sold at 70THB.

Sinkorswim - will you friend sell to the public by the case?

they sell them in the bottle shops on Loi Kroh road soi 1 across from charlies fish and chips and several other places, I think there is a bottle shop near to chiang mai gate that stocks it.

I am sure they will sell you a case if you go in and ask. Not sure of the prices.

Here is the email address if you want more details as I dont really know too much about it. <email removed>

  14. Beer Loa is a very good beer. The reason it is pricey is due to the Thai goverment import duties. I personally think it is way better than any Thai beer.

I actually know who the distributer is in Chiang mai so if anyone wants his details for there business send me a PM.

  15. this is actually a good thread if I knew where any of these places are. I have lived in CHiang Mai for nearly 2 years and dont know the names of any roads.....guess I should buy a map. :D

For my answer for the best noodle soup in town is approx 50 meters to the left (if you are looking at) Zobra greek resturant. Only open during the day, I think closes at 4pm but the beef nam dok is fantastic only 25baht or 30 baht for the special. Sorry to lazy to figure out how to write it in phonetic Thai. :D I will add more when I can figure out how to discribe where they are......or maybe i will buy a map.

As for the best food full stop I love eating at Dukes but that is a little more than 30 baht. :D

Also MJM please please tell me where you can get good pizza I miss it every pizza I have had in chiang mai has been crap :o and that is being polite.

  16. Hi always wanted to get my nose straigtened as it is sligtly to one side. Was going to go to BKK but as I live up here is seems to make more sense to see if there are any good nose surgeons in Chiang Mai.

I would like personal recommendations if possible and would like a doctor who has experience working on falangs as I dont want to end up looking like michael jackson.

    Any answers appreciated. :o

  17. Can someone clarify for me incase I am missing something.

I have a non-B visa it is my second 1 year visa just renewed in the UK 3 months ago, but I am not working as I am looking for something to do. Last month on the 12th sept I applied for a extension on the basis of marraige (got married 3 months ago) and I have to go back on the 12th Oct. They have already been out to the house and checked everything and I will go in 1 week to see if they are giving me the 1 year extension. I had to show the 400000baht in the bank which was ok. Now my question from what I have just read next year they will not extend my visa again unless I am working. What can I do? I am 33 years old and do not work in Thailand or the UK, I send money over from the UK ( I have money in the bank in the UK) every year and live of that. Will they next year not give me a new years extension unless I am working and paying taxes? If so what are my options? I dont work am too young for a retirement visa so the marraige route is the only option for me to get a 1 year extension. Will I have to go back to the UK and get a 1 year marraige visa instead of a business visa and then do 90 day visa runs again? Or do I bugger of back to the UK and take the wife.

    Any replies greatly appreciated.

    Not correct...

National Police Office Order No. 606/2006

    7.17

    (6) In case of the applicant who is married to a Thai wife, one of them or both of them need to have the total annual income that is averaged out not less than 40,000 Baht per month. Except for the case that the said foreign national has entered Thailand before this Order is enforced and the foreign national has been permitted to stay in the Kingdom by the result of having married to a Thai wife, then if the applicant does not have the said income, then, the latest 3 months records of the account book of any Bank in Thailand with the account name of either or both parties need to have the amount of money not less than 400,000 Baht.

As you applied before this order was enforced ( Oct. 1st, 2006), the income requirement does not apply to you.

Ok thanks for that. I was a bit worried as I did apply before the 1st Oct but I will not get the actual extension until maybe the 12th this month if not later.

  19. I applied for my 1 year extension on the basis of marraige last month. They accepted the 400000 baht in the bank but did ask where it came from and what I had been living on for the last year.

Luckly my bank book showed I made withdrawls every month for living expenses and I just send over a lump sum from the UK 1 time every year. From what I have read the new rules mean they will check to see if the money is really yours so you cannot just borrow from someone put it in there for 1 week then draw it out. It has to be used for living expenses and also they will check to see if the marraige is real. Immigration come to my apartment unannounced a few days ago and asked my wife loads of questions including "did I hit her? and where did I get my money from?" They even asked the office in my building if I was working.

I passed on all counts but I have been told they will still make checks for up to 3 months before I get the final extension but no big deal as I get 1 month extensions until it is sorted from the immigrantion. Hopefully I will get my 1 year at the end of next month.
