  1. The real issue is somebody bought these jet skis and they cost a small fortune. The government should compensate the operators for their loss or move them offshore or to the EAST Coast where tourists who want this kind of fun can join the speedboats and other machines (without swimmer, surfers, divers etc).

Or conduct a study which shows the revenue earned by all beach goers versus (what I assume to be) the majority that hate jetskis and they ruin their day in the water.

  2. A few weeks ago I saw a Chinese couple on a rented jet ski 50 feet from the Kata beach shoreline - I tried to give them instructions with sign language and by yelling at them. And yesterday, I had a sunset paddle with at least 5 jet skis roaming about and many more parked on the beach. The main problem is tourists have no training and never follow any rules. Rental outfits need to make money rent out in times of high waves and poor conditions. Better yet - just sanction them to the East Coast where there are no swimmers.

  3. While elections can be monitored, those of us that have Thai relatives in rural areas know political canvassers pay people to vote at their homes not at voting centers. As such, does anyone have a good suggestion on how this can be avoided/prevented? Seems that there needs to be a major paradigm shift. Which will require positive changes in the school system - and in all government bureaucracies. This will take a successive stream (over several generations) of work influenced by a free-thinking society not money-politics.

    They aren't ready for democracy.

They ARE ready for a 'Benevolent Dictatorship' - - - Enter > > General Prayuth and what you get is a man of the highest integrity, who plays NO favorites and who is hell-bent on cleaning-up the "Rotten-through-The-Core" Thai society.

I don't know where he came from, but Thailand should be utterly grateful that this man stepped-up to the plate and is, by force, cleaning-up where there's dirt; - and creating honesty, where there's deceit; - and creating equality, where there's none ! ! !

    Thailand applauds Gen. Prayuth

  4. To the guy who said his relatives are getting 800 kilos of rice per rai with organic fertilizers. I hope you know that is an incredible amount, most organic farmers average between 300 to 500 kilos. So please share more information about the location of the farm and the techniques he is using. I might want to come up and conduct a related study.

However, the amount depends on many natural factors regardless of the type of fertilizers used. Higher yield are typically attained in Central Thailand where soil is best and rainfall most plentiful.

  5. Some offices allow up to 45 days early but most still only allow 30 days early to apply for an extension of stay.

Since this will be your first extension you may need to be home when they do a home vist shortly after you apply for the extension.

There will also be a under consideration stamp with a date 30 days to report back for your extension stamp after you apply or the date your permit to stay date ends (different policy at some offices).

    Ubonjoe,

Does that mean exactly 30 days before expiry or 0 to 30 days before expiry to initiate application process?

  6. I have nearly completed the last re-entry on my 1 year multiple entry visa (married to Thai National).

I plan to show required documents/proof of funds to get a 1 year extension. My last entry will expire on Sept 29 . Can I go to apply for extension anytime before the expiry day?

I would like to apply it in August (approx. 45 days before expiry as I will travel upcountry in early Sept). That is to say, can I apply more than 30 days before expiry of last entry?

  7. See 10 year visa possibility for Malaysia - seems Thailand could benefit from a similar scheme:

Requirements For Malaysia My Second Home

    ELIGIBILITY
The program is open to all foreign citizens (including foreign spouses married to Malaysians)

Successful participants are allowed to bring their dependants (wife and children)

    1. Fixed deposit of RM300,000 (upon conditional approval of MM2H visa)

    2. You can withdraw RM150,000 after one (1) year

    3. Must maintain a minimum balance of RM150,000 from second year onwards and throughout stay in Malaysia under this program
    4. Monthly income of RM10,000 or equivalent in foreign currency (to show during application)
  8. You need to extend where you live but if wife is listed somewhere else it can be an issue so be sure to have proof of rent or ownership at new location.

What type of proof do we need? Would a rental agreement suffice?

I think there is some kind of document that immigration can issue to state your legal residence?

We have yet to get an official address on our newly built house, but use my wife's cousin's house as our mailing address.

  9. The problem is the teacher and the school system as a whole starting from elementary up to the university level. A new breed of teachers need to be trained in progressive methods. However, it is a vicious circle as the teachers even at a university level are rarely interested in developing creativity. Student play it safe by regurgitating what their teachers' say to get a good grade. And students are mainly concerned with grades and not their learning.

Having provided assistance to elementary schools in Southern Thailand, I noticed many teachers turned on satelilte teaching on a television, while teaching unrelated subjects.

My comments are based on my personal experience having completed a phd here and taught many levels of students in Thai universities.
