  1. The government is now supporting DARE Fight Sports. Thailands first & largest MMA event.

    From the Phuket News:

DFS Founder Jussi Saloranta said, “We are delighted to have received official support from the Sport promotion arm of the Ministry of Tourism & Sports. This is the most remarkable development step for Mixed Martial Arts in Thailand since June 2011 when Dare Fight Sports, Thailand's only Professional MMA organization launched its Million Dollar Tournament, DARE.”

Since it's launch, Dare Fight Sports rapidly grew to become one of the leading MMA organizations in Asia, hosting four successful MMA events in Bangkok, Thailand the Original Fight Capital of the world.

DARE returns to Bangkok this October 12 with its next event “Rebels of MMA” in Club Insanity on Sukhumvit Soi 12 with seven heavily anticipated bouts, headlined by IRON FIST VS THE JOE RAY.

  2. RoadHouse has a pretty dam_n good burger

Iron Fairies was my favorite for quite a while but it is now closed sadly enough.

FireHouse on Soi 11 i think currently holds the title for best burger I've had in BKK.

The Game at Nana station isn't too bad, though inconsistant. I've gone in an had a great burger and another time had a very dry one.

  3. I'm a few months off from finishing my 1st year here when my Visa will expire. I'm told The Ministry of Education will be testing me.

My question is what will they be testing me on.... At the school they just said "The Ministry will talk to you in Thai so you better know the basics." Thats all they said.

So whats the test? Them talking to me? Is there an actual test?

Anyone that has experienced this please help me out!

  4. In 5 years you should at least speak a reasonable amount of thai.

    Why?

    Sent from my i-mobile i-STYLE Q6

Why? because you live in Thailand. Do you get upset when people move to your home country and refuse to speak your language? and rightfully so, its rude. So you being here that long you should have learned at least a nominal amount if for no other reason than to be polite and make your life a little easier.

I've been here 9 months and though not fluent at all just from asking a random question here and there are fully functional in a taxi and can order anything I want to eat (though clumsily at times) in a restaurant. Sure my conversational skills are not prime but its in the works and this is all without school.

In 5 years I'd hope to be fluent if not well on my way to being so.

  5. I've been looking for a place to walk my pug in BKK. the sidewalks are small and there are tons of soi dogs. unlike the thread starter my dog is an apartment dog, maybe 3kg and by no means intimidating.

It seems all the parks here don't allow pets.

anyone familiar with a park in BKK?

    (sorry to sidetrack the thread)

  6. Which brach you are referring to? I will look into it. Opinions differ about Walen school, some people love it, some don't like it so much, hard to please all. Everybody can take demo lessons, talk to other students and staff and decide if Walen system is for them.

Kilgore Trout, most of Walen teachers taught hundreds and even thousands of lessons. I assure you that they know what they do. If you are one of Walen students I would be happy to meet and have a chat about your complaint and see what I can do. If you are not, then not nice to make such remarks.

I go to the branch by Asok. I understand that teaching style from the classes I've been to (Alphabet only this far) really its just memorization at the moment. Thats not an issue.

As per the teachers, they are not the ones who tested me. The lady at the front desk is. My teachers were quite surprised I wasn't passed. I was surprised to see her change my friends grade from fail to pass purely based on her mood. Then the following week she (or whoever) went on to pass students who couldn't even read the names of letters off the paper correctly let alone recall them from memory.

I haven't been back to the school since learning all this. I paid to learn a language not to be judged by a person's (who isn't even my teacher) particular mood at that moment and to receive an unfair shake because of it.

I am not trying to speak badly of your company. Your teachers are quite competent and maintain a good repor with the students and are genuinely excited to see them do well but my experience with the woman who tested me and her ability to just pass or fail someone on a whim because she felt like it (as per my friend who was failed then moments later in the office was passed with a "I changed my mind, you pass". yes I was present for that.) really gets my goat.

  7. No offense, but if they failed me, I would just study harder so they won't fail me next time

If I had made major mistakes that would be reasonable. She acutually complimented me durring my test saying other than (in her opinion though my teachers disagree) the 2 letters I said wrong that i have "The best pronunciation of anyone she has tested in alphabet class"

Mind you, I went in with a friend who tested before me, she failed as well after we both tested she just turned to my friend and said "I changed my mind, you pass".

    Sound shady yet?

  8. I took my Alphabet test and was failed over minor sound differences in 2 letters but not 1 week later they passed people from my class that still could't pronounce things properly while reading off the page let alone from memory or just by site.

This makes no sense to me personally. Anyone experience something similar?

I want to go in and confront the desk people but I was told thats not culturally how its done here. I am to contact a 3rd party and have them argue my part...

    Ideas? Suggestions? Experiences?

  9. Can't refer to Pico Projectors specifically, but projectors in general seem to be about double the US price, and new models take quite a while to get here. I've bought a couple in the last year and ended up importing both.

One was a 1080p BenQ that retailed in Thailand for THB88,000 but could be bought easily online for USD1300.

I guess that the demand here isn't strong enough yet to generate real competition.

Yeah it looks like I'll be importing as well. How bad was the customs on your order?
