  1. Great thanks for that it's exactly the info I was after. I am British so everything applies.

In answer to your question we have not yet got her a British passport due to (how I understand it) she would have to pass another English test despite having passed the life in the uk test etc etc her English is near enough fluent so it's not because she wouldn't pass but it's just another thing we have not yet got round to. Plus it will cost about £1000 in total. It really would save us a lot of hassle though so it's next on my list of things to do. Life, kids, house, family and other holidays have just got in the way of doing it so far ;)

  2. Hi all

Can anyone help with this. My wife has been in the UK for nearly 9 years and has ILR we want to take a short weekend break to Amsterdam and I wondered what if any visa is needed for this. Does the freedom to roam apply here or would that only be if I had Dutch family.

I guess its a shengen visa I need and how easy/much hassle is it to get one?

Sorry if this is a repeat topic or in the wrong place and excuse any spelling/grammar mistakes as I'm typing this on my phone.

    Thanks

    J

  3. Thanks guys, I've tried youtube and can find it but its an Indian version and I was after the Thai Language one. I have actually managed to get the DVD to work now, it had a sticker on the disk itself that made it too thick to play in my laptop. I managed to remove this sticker and it does now seem to work more consistently. If anyone ever finds an official copy of it I would be interested in where so I can get a proper high quality version.

  4. Hi

Anybody know where I could buy a DVD of khan kluay the kids animated movie. I'm back in England at the moment and my son would love it. I can't seem to find it anywhere online and I can't find a download of it. I did buy a copy whilst over in Thailand the other week at a market but it was a ripped copy and doesn't play very well.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  5. Yeah local bus or hire a car but just to nip from the hotel we were in to the beach to meet some friends not even a 5 main journey was 200 minimum. I'm In ao nang now and by comparison I can go from one end of ao nang to the other for 30b

  6. Right thought I would post an update. The hotel was great, really nice place lovely gardens swimming pools etc. There was an issue with my mums room the first night and they got put in an amazing upgraded room for the evening and then moved to another really nice room better than the original one booked. Couldn't really fault it the staff were lovely and it was really beautiful.

Phuket itself however was not such a great experience. Not as bad as some say but 200b for a very short taxi ride is ridiculous. In fact this was probably my main and only gripe to get to another area of karon would cost 200b even when only going about half a k.

Thanks for all the advice from people on here.

  7. Hi all

Has anybody stayed at the Riva Surya hotel? I just booked a night there for me and my family in feb, reviews on trip advisor etc look good but wonderd if anyone here has first hand experience of it.

    Thanks

  8. I'm going at a similar time with my wife 3 year old boy and my parents about the same age. We have booked centara karon resort. It was a little over your budget but as its Chinese new year everything is a little more expensive. I researched a fair bit and think karon sounded like the right mix of quietness but still a few drinking holes etc.

  9. Thanks grumpyoldman that was my thinking behind it really. I remember years ago staying in a place down the coast from hua hin which was lovely but it was so isolated and you were confined to only eating in about 2 places and there was nothing much else to do.

Thanks for the recommendation on the two chefs as well, I will be sure to check it out.

  10. Well guys, thanks for all the responses it's been helpful. Interestingly enough we are going to ao nang the following week. I have been there loads before and love it but didn't fancy 2 weeks there so wanted somewhere different. Also I don't see the fact that Muslims are running businesses there as any sort of issue or a "shame" at all, people are people regardless of religion and I have always found everyone in Ao Nang lovely but its probably best we don't get into a discussion about this, let's keep it on topic.

We have ended up going for something on Karon beach the centara resort it was a little over my budget but my mum decided to help out a bit and we have pushed the boat out for that week. I'm sure my son will love the swimming pools there etc. I know its one of the busier beaches but we kind of fancied lots of things nearby I hope there are some authentic thai food places near by as my wife and I won't want burgers and seafood every day but equally my parents would probably appreciate some western fayre.

Regarding getting around on the island are taxis etc really overpriced and won't go in the meter? Is that the case even if we can speak Thai? Another question haha any suggestions of things to see and do for a family there and also any good bars with music in the evening as my wife and I will be able to use my mum as a baby sitter some nights ;)

  11. Hi all. I am a long time lurker of this website and very rarely post, but here goes. I have been to Thailand a number of times and used to live there a few years ago. I have a wife who is thai and a 2 and a half year old little boy.

We are looking at spending a week in phuket at the end of Feb (over Chinese new year) I will have my parents from England with me as well who are in the 60's and 70's. We are looking for somewhere that can cater to all of us, we want it near the beach with a few nice places to eat and drink around but not full on patong style nightlife. Budget is 4500thb max.

I have searched the forum and found some useful info but wanted to get some fresh responses and thought this the best way.

  12. I love Isaan, I spent a good few months living in a small village called Phusing and it was some of the best months of my life. My wife and I currently live in England and are happy but Isaan truly is a wonderful place. The pace of life and the culture and the acceptance both myself and my brother (who also lived with us) was second to none. I really believe its the true Thailand if such a thing exists.

I spent hours reading books helping in the Garden playing with the animals and small children. Also the parties were great fun I had the greatest new years eve of my life in that small village. Isaan will always have a special place in my heart and I can't wait to visit again once my son is slightly older so he too can experience that way of life and meet his family.

I too believe that speaking the lingo helps, I speak a fairly good mix of Thai and Laos and it really gives you more of an insight and understanding of things. Isaan will most probably be on my list of places to retire too, but that’s a looooong way off.

P.S just realised this is my first post on this forum, I have read it for years but never contributed however this post really made me think of what a wonderful place it is and how lucky I am to have experienced it and will continue to do so. Also the Woman of Isaan are in my opinion the most beautiful ladies in the world.
