  1. Hello All,

A customer of mine wants me to fly to Taiwan to do an installation.  My current non-O/Thai wife VISA expires on December 28 (we usually start the renewal application around December 1st). I worry that the mandatory WuWu quarantine and lack of flights could delay my return, so my question is simply this:

What is the last day in December that my wife and I can go to immigration and extend my VISA for another year?

I really, really do not want to apply for a new VISA in Taiwan...

    Thank You,

    Phil Ster

  2. Hi,

My wife and I are in the process of closing our business. I have a business/work visa that expires on Jan 8, 2015. I am thinking I will need to change it to a marriage visa soon because I probably will not be able to renew the business visa, and even if they let me, it would be a two year visa and I would run into trouble when we close the business before the 2 years are up and then tried to transfer it over to a marriage visa.

Has anyone done this before, or have any advice on how to go about doing this. My business visa was issued in the BOI one-stop office and I will need to get a marriage visa from the main office in Chang Wattana, so I suspect there will be some headaches doing the transfer.

    Thanks,

    Phil

  3. As far as the tax question. If the bank takes out the tax from your account and you file an income tax form, then you can claim and get your money refunded. I did this for a few years because my income tax rate was lower than the standard interest withholding rate with all my deductables.

Seeing as you have a work permit and can type in English, I suspect you will end up paying some income tax on your salary. In that case your top rate is probally higher than the withholding, so IMHO you should do nothing and not worry about it. Just fill out the income tax form and get some of your salary withholding refunded.

  4. You have kind of lost me on this one. It takes about 4 minutes, at the start, to select a domain name, and have it registered to you. How you checked WHOIS? This will tell you if the domain, as it should be, is on your name. You need to find out if you, or someone else, owns your domain. Go to GoDaddy.com, and check their WHOIS. It will tell you who owns it. Hopefully, you do.... Good luck.

Yes, relax and slow down a bit. Stoli is correct. The ownership of domains is public knowledge. You can also go to whois.net and look them up too ...

  5. Hi,

My wife and I own a Thai corp. We are selling in a new market and and our original name is not a good match for it, but we still need it in the first market. So we cannot do a business name change, but need to add an additional name to our company.

In the USA I did this before by filing a DBA (Doing Business As) form with my state government for a small fee. It was all legal and gave me an alias I could use on my checking account and post address.

The Thai people I know don't have a clue about these things so I am wondering if anyone here knows if this is possible to do ?

    Thanks,

    Phil

  6. She needs to earn 300,000 and you need to stop withholding tax at 3.3%

So what you are saying is if we want to write it off we have the withhold exactly 3.3% of the 600 baht and deduct it as an accounting service ?

If yes, then I am OK with that because we do this for a lot of other purchases, and I we easily do this and give her the 3.3% out of pocket. Please reply if I got it correct. Thanks for the help !!!!!!!

  7. She needs to earn 300,000 and you need to stop withholding tax at 3.3%

By the way she seems to be some help with your tax if she doesn't even know this!
LOL, You crack me up. That has been experience in the land of smiles. The sweet ladies know what they know and that is it !!

I can't even ask my auditor because she has been bugging my wife to take over the accounting and I know I won't get a straight answer from her.

Truthfully I don't want employees. When the last one quit is was such a relief to not have to deal with the social security paperwork anymore, and I don't want to go there again. I want contractors, OK. If they want social security then they can ask me for a small raise and they can go to the office and pay it themselves. We are a small company it is not amount the money as much as IT IS ABOUT THE DAMN PAPERWORK.

if anyone knows how to go about writing off the service I would really appreciate it.

  8. Hi,

We have a woman who comes in twice a month to help my wife with the tax paperwork. We pay her 600 baht cash each time she comes in. Does anyone know how we must go about deducting this money because we are starting to make a profit now and we need every deduction we can get.

It should not affect her because she needs to have about 100,000 annual salary before she has to pay any income tax. So it is a matter of doing the paperwork properly with the Thai tax department...

    Thanks,

    Philster

  9. Hi,

I have been exporting hardware for the last year and I know how to get the custom's receipt so we don't have to pay the VAT.

My question is we are getting into software sales. We could export the software by Fedexing a CD, but I am wondering how to do it PROPERLY by just billing the customer and having them download the software.

The reason why I am asking this is we are going to get into ANDROID and IPHONE apps in the next year and eventually most of our sales will be through the Google and Apple stores.

Has anyone done this before ? If so how do you satisfy the government so you don't have to pay VAT on an export sale of software. Also is this kind of sale considered a service or a product ?

    Thanks,

    Phil

  10. I think potential issues with using Skype, for your wife is mobile broadband here in Thailand, with both the need for 3G, and the potential to quickly overrun her monthly data allotment. An "unlimited internet usage" plan with a fair-use speed limit of 384 Kbps may work.

I wouldn't necessarily rely on public WiFi hotspots to support Skype.

Do you happen to know if there is 3G available in the general area where your wife lives?

Ultimately it may be simplest, easiest, cheapest for you to call her, She can receive calls on a simple mobile phone with a SIM for no per minute cost, and you can originate calls from the U.S. to her using any number of low cost options: calling card, VoIP, Skype, etc. Prices are as low as 1 baht ($0.03) per minute. For your wife to originate calls via Skype a reasonable data plan might cost her ~ 650 baht per month. So you could use a calling card for 650 minutes (20 minutes per day) before it might cost more than equipping her with mobile data, and a new phone?

I went home for lunch and checked for WiFi. There is no AIS/3BB but there is a True WiFi hotspot. I use True DSL for my internet in my office (not house). I am wondering if I am a True customer, can I use the hotspots for free ?

  11. This is a fairly broad question but if you could provide more details it might narrow the scope and yield specific recommendations.

Do you have internet service at your home in Thailand? If so, do you have a WiFi router? Will you have it in the U.S.? Does your wife currently have a mobile phone/service? Would you have a mobile phone in the U.S.?

How long will you be in the U.S.? How often would you be talking? Do you want to be able to call each other, or could one party initiate each call? What kind if budget do you have for calling?

Probably the simplest approach would be for each to use standard mobile phones on each side and then use calling cards.

We don't have WiFi or internet at our house, so I am looking for a SIM card with internet access that is fast enough to do a simple Skype voice only call.

I purchased a Skype plan for my biz where I can call any number in the USA for free and I also have a dedicated USA Skype phone number. It only costs about 80 bucks a year and it allows me to maintain a USA presence where my customers call my local USA number and it rings on Skype in my Thai office.

All my wife needs to do to get a hold of me is to call my USA cell phone number with Skype. When I want to call her, I just call the local USA number and it rings her on Skype. I did this before and it works pretty good with computers, so I want to use it with a smartphone.

I know this sounds crazy, but I am an old fart. I am totally new to all this smartphone technology. What I am really looking for is advice from my fellow expats on what SIM service will get the job done. I can't get this advice from the Thai because when they see me they always try to up sell me. I need to do prepaid cards because the last time I signed something in Thai I was tricked by a greedy pig, and I will not sign anything again ...

  12. Hi All,

I have to travel the USA and my wife has to stay in Thailand and take care of the kids. I want to get her a economical smart phone for Christmas so we can talk. She does not need a large phone, just a phone that can do Skype.

Also, she will need a SIM card with internet access for Skype. We prefer the prepaid kinds you can fill up at 7-11.

Do you have any recommendations for a phone and SIM card ? There are so many out there I really could use some advice ...

    Thanks,

  13. The extension is of the permit to stay (it is not a visa) you currently have. The extension starts when current permit to stay ends.

I think the work permit is the same.

I am not sure you will be able to extend 3 months early. Normally it is within the last 30 days of your permit to stay.

Just to set the record straight for other readers,

The guy at the Dept. of labor (work permit) counter told me I could renew 4 months early. I checked later with BOI (different office). When you renew your work permit and VISA they will expire 2 years from the last day of the month which you renewed it. So if I renew it 5 months early, I would loose 4 months.

  14. Hello and good day,

My 2 year visa and WP are up in on March 31, 2013. My question is when I renew them both on the same day at one stop, will my new visa and WP be good until March 31, 2015 or will they be good for 2 years from the date that I renewed them ?

In other words I want to know if I renew them 3 months early, will I loose those 3 months which I already payed for ?

    Thanks,

    Phil
