  1. 35 years of using ATMs I've never done it. Had my card eaten once, does that count?

Same here, never done it. Is TV populated by a bunch of senile old geezers who can't even remember to remove an ATM card from the machine? Appears so.

Never... ATM rules: card, money, no distraction.

Can't be much simpler, can it?!? whistling.gif

Obviously you are far more used to the way that ATMs work here. It is easy to become a creature of habit when the way ATMs work is different in Europe and other countries. Not everyone on here is senile or old, you are just a bit "perfect".

  2. Yep done it here twice, first time my Swiss bank who would not send a replacement to me here, you can imagine what I think of them and if I still bank with them. Second was my UK account and it took two weeks to get the replacement. Luckily had another account and card.

I did it in Romania too as the procedure is the same but some lovely lady ran after me and handed it to me.

  3. I am in the process of writing to two friends in Belgium, who wish to visit Thailand for the first time.

Initially, the trip was Bangkok, Racha Islands, Phuket, Samui, Koh Tao and thence to Bangkok.

In view of the seemingly endless violence in and around Phuket where senior ambassadors plead with the Governor of Phuket to at least try and reduce, just reduce the robbery, the jet ski violent scams in which the Police seem to be involved, Russians beaten up or beating up others I wrote to them to cut out the ten days planned for Phuket.

Yes, I know that since the advent of Taksin and his lawless red-shirts, law and order in Thailand take a back seat - it would be nice to hear that things are getting better on this front.

Um, I guess you don't live in Phuket, why tell people not to come here so they can see for themselves. Millions of visitors a year cannot be wrong and they aren't all perverts!

I have been here for 2.5 years and never had any major problems that wouldn't have happened in Europe.

It's a shame that Phuket has such a bad reputation as I actually love living here in the South of the island although I do stay away from the mad places like Patong unless it's a special occasion.

Common sense is the best defense.

  4. Seems a few people are missing the point here. You are in Thailand and they have rules like any other country. You may have noticed the signs on the doors of immigration regarding dress and behaviour.

The one thing I have become aware of in this Kingdom is that there are laws and rules that are broken and those that are not. Have you ever seen a guy in a singlet in a temple? I don't understand why people think they can disregard these when it's so easy to make it easy!

  5. It's actually quite easy to live in Phuket and spend less that in Bangkok if you have some savvy. Been there two years and went from a $100 lifestyle to a $10 one and didn't lose the pleasure of living in one of the best places I have ever lived. Go as tourist then find the right places to be, easy.

  6. Yeah my card got scanned but I don't have a Thai account. The thieves withdraw nearly £1000 in 4 withdrawals at a supermarket in Vietnam and another payment somehow.

Luckily I am with HSBC in the UK and they realised and blocked my card so I had to be in front of an ATM and call them to get any cash until I went back to Europe. They refunded the money and launched their own investigation.

The same thing happened to me in Heathrow airport of all places with the same result.

  7. I have been here in Phuket two years and am finding it unbelievable how many more elephants have been brought here to live in abject misery. Chained to the floor for ages (watch the way they rock and shake their heads), then made to carry tourists around and then hit with sticks with big hooks on the end.

I live around the corner from a safari and thought I was hallucinating one day when a huge on came charging down the dead end Moo and disappeared into the jungle, his handlers arrived shortly afterward asking if I had seen him. How could I not!

    Still this is Thailand!
