OK, so your is is better to bring US to Thailand? Where would be the best place to exchange for THB?

I am planning on another holiday in LOS this winter and was trying to think of a way to bring spend money. I previously used ATM cards and Credit Cards. I hate getting dinged twice every time I use the ATM card and many places there do not take credit cards. I have a credit card with no foreign transaction fee, but the exchange rate is not great. I was thinking is it possible (or legal) to bring pure gold to sell at the gold shops there? I know it is a way of life as the locals frequently buy and sell the local Thai gold. It would not be much more than once or two. It could be in the form of gold bars or coin. Is this a viable way to bring money in the country?

I am not sure if you can find it in Chiang Mai, but look for a Zoom H1 Handy Portable Digital Recorder. Bare bone it is about $90.00 US and will take an external input but is so small it can be used as a mike by itself. It is not rechargeable but takes one AA battery. Zoom says it will record for 10 hours on one battery.

Just 40 crimes per day !!!! Does seem high to me. I wonder how that compares to Bangkok and also how it compares to other big cities round the world. I think whatever stats you look at, it's still pretty high...
Seems high to me for a town the size of Phuket! ...and this is the low season!

I also use the Garmin SEA chip in my NUVI when I travel in LOS. My GPS sometimes takes me out of the way at times. I am suspecting that the release I have (not sure what issue) is programmed for driving on the RIGHT side of the road. It often tries to direct me around the block or many kilometers past where I want to go so I can make a u-turn to get on the other side of a divided road. I have been surprised many times to find my destination in short distance on the left side of the road where I can easily turn into the address! If sometimes I follow the directions through all the crazy turns, I will arrive at my destination find I am on the wrong side of a divided road or highway!

These "falls" from balconies reminds me too much of what was happening in Honduras when I was there some years ago. There was a rash of foreign business men falling from balconies and windows and no one could understand why. It was later found out that these foreigners did not fall, but was thrown from these heights! It was discovered the thugs would somehow force themselves into a hotel room and demand money. When the victim could not produce enough money the thugs would demand the victims ATM card pass-code. If the victim refuses, the thugs would literally force the victim half way over the railing until the victim produced the code number. Most of the victims were throw over the balcony anyways. It was not discovered until some want-a-be thugs tried the same thing but chose not to complete the act a throw the victim over the railing! I am not saying this is what is happening in any of these “accidents” but I would check out the bank accounts of the deceased!

I knew a salesman who carried Hornet Spray with when he was in a questionable neighborhood. He told me it was not expensive and had a solid stream accurate to about 20 feet. He really didn't care what after affects it had on any dogs!
