Good on you! It will get easier but you need to improve slowly and steadily. I did the same thing when I was 60, using a great podcast from the UK NHS - "Couch to 5K" which takes you from nothing to running 5km in 30min over a period of 9 weeks. Strongly recommend it... http://www.nhs.uk/LiveWell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k.aspx

He should be able to return with a valid visa and work on the currently valid work permit. While the non-B visa may be dependent on the work permit, the work permit is not dependent on the visa.

I would not recommend a foreign student to study in Thailand at the undergraduate level, but at the graduate level, I think it might be a positive option.
Agreed - many staff qualified to supervise postgraduate students have studied in the UK, US or Europe, and there is some internationally competitive research in Thai universities in health sciences, agriculture, sustainable technologies etc

Just to reiterate - exchanging THB for GBP, and I guess for Euro, outside Thailand is very expensive. 100K Baht is not a lot, but you might be at least 50Euro short compared with exchanging it in Thailand and bringing, or transferring, the money. So unless you really want Baht in Europe, or can get a private deal with e.g. future tourists, exchange it here.

Definitely need a work permit, even for short term contracts. I am now 63, and for three years now I've had a 6-month contract every year with a University which would not pay me unless I had a WP. Don't let him work without one!

105Baht = £2 which will get you less than half a minimum single fare on the London tube

I'd suggest easiest is Bank to Bank transfer. I sent about 250K Baht this way from Krungsri bank to UK Coop bank. First transfer into Sterling as exchange rate was, I found, MUCH better in Thai banks, then transfer sterling amount via SWIFT - I filled in Foreign Exchange Transaction Form. Cost for me was 500baht for exchange, and about £15 for bank charge by co-op. you can choose to pay charges either at Thai or UK bank. Very easy!
Hi @GavinReynolds,
May I ask the distinction you made between Bank to Bank transfer and SWIFT?
It seems to me they are the same but you might have a heads up I don't.
I usually pay a minimum fee of 1350Baht transferring bank (Thai) to bank (Abroad), do you have a cheaper method?
Thanks for the info.
Sorry, no distinction intended. Bank to bank transfer via SWIFT. The form I filled in asked if bank charges should be paid from remitter or beneficiary bank - I chose the latter which was £15. I found combination of Thai bank exchange rate, ease of transfer, security and low charge was best. But there may be cheaper ways.

It is very easy! A simple international bank transfer can be done, with forms in English and Thai I think, although it is useful if you get someone who can speak a little English in the Thai bank to help (unless you are Thai fluent). Exchange to GBP first, then transfer. I repatriated several £K (Thai university earnings from a short contract) with no problem and at exchange rates FAR, FAR better than you get in the UK banks, learnt to my cost after I first took Baht back to UK. One thing to look out for is that they ask for a reason for the transfer on the form; I thought it best not to mention earnings so described it as "refund of travel expenses".
Hope this helps - Good luck.

I agree with Naroge - I had a 6-month University contract and they sorted all the WP stuff with me. Once you have it (a little blue booklet), it is, I think, easier to get it renewed each time. If they really want you, they'll sort it out...

Yes, a very obvious April fool. But I enjoyed it, not so much for the original piece, which was OK, as for the indignant and bewildered replies...

Hmmm, I thought it was 10ml = 10CC, whence the name of the band. But that must have been a schoolboy myth...
