  1. Not the same border crossing but I only got 14 days at Ranong. I went to Myannmar with 25 days remaining on my 30 day tourist visa and did a boat trip for 6 days. On exit( believe it or not) they wanted to see my ticket out of Thailand which was for 28 days time.

On re entry 6 days later no request for my ticket out of Thailand but they only gave me 14 days. I didn't discover this until the 13th day then extended my visa at the cost of 1900 baht on the 14th day.

I believe immigration made a mistake-I should have recieved a 30 day visa on re entry.

BTW I've never done a visa run.

  2. Hi,

I need to rent a car either in Ranong or Chumphon but it looks like all the major companies( Avis, Hertz, budget etc) don't service these 2 cities.

Does anyone know of a car rental company servicing the area?

Appreciate any advice that you may have.

  3. Mine was a 64 Isuzu Bellett, probably not sold in the US. Tough as nails but had it's limits. I turned it over 6 times attempting a high speed manoeuvre one night, after leaving quite a bit of rubber down the road which totalled it. Then upgraded to a $500 1968 Bellett which survived my ownership intact.

On the pump situation I managed to trigger the overheating cut out when I adjusted the switch all the way down and it seemed OK for an hour or two but somewhere along the line it came on, stayed on and I missed hearing it. It then overheated and stopped. Seems fine now and at least I know the overheating cut out works.

Called into Global at Phitsanulok and sighted the same model but this one had more information on the side of the pressure switch. Apparently the 2kpa specification is the minimum pressure, the maximum is 2.6kpa. I has mistakenly thought the 2kpa on the nameplate was the maximum.

With this new information I went to Kamphaeng Phet and returned the switch that didn't work( they refunded my money since they sold out of the correct size) and managed to find another shop that had a Hitachi switch with the correct settings.

Now all I have to do is install it without screwing it up......

  4. Pib,

Yep-that's a picture of the same pump I have. Your previous problem sounds similar, if not identical. I'll try and get the correct pressure switch and also have a go at smoothing the points.

Sounds similar to what I used to do for my car back in the 60's when it wouldn't start -invariably I'd sandpaper the points and that would fix the problem.

  5. Thanks. The pump is a 250W Hitachi drawing from a 1000L tank which sits on the same base as the pump. The pump feeds two rooms, one on ground level and one on the first floor. The supply tank is full and the pump never needs priming. It is rated to 2KPA which is around 29Psi and has a small 1L pressure tank.

The problem I have is that the pump doesn't shut down which I assume means the contacts are not opening. If it shut down prematurely or didn't supply the required pressure I would suspect as Pib and T_Dog say that the motor overheating switch was operating or line voltage was insufficient or perhaps some other reason.

If it happened each time I would suspect the adjustment of the pressure ( which I have meddled with) but this only happens after a few hours of correct operation ( and at different times of the day). The duty cycle of the pump is light with maybe 5-6 tap openings of 30 seconds or less each hour before it malfunctions.

There will be a reason but right now my best guess is that the contacts are sticking shut but why this should happen has me beat...the pressure switch doesn't seem hot and the contacts have no reason to heat up as there is no sign of rapid on/off cycling.

  6. Thanks for the comments everyone. Tried various settings on the one available adjustment that does adjust a spring above the points. I can get it to work perfectly for a few hours with taps occasionally being turned on and off, After after 4 hours or so a tap is opened and the pump comes on as before but stays on. Happened at 730PM when it should have been cooler than 4 hours prior so I can't believe it is heat related and in any case the pressure switch shouldn't be generating much heat. I switch off the electricity and wait a few hours and it is then OK for the next few hours.

I've now bought a replacement switch( brand name Sebora) but whilst it looks like it is the correct size it doesn't actually fit so I'll keep looking.

  7. Crossy,

Thanks-that makes sense regarding the pressure limits. I did try some small adjustments( with power off )on the screw( both ways) without any obvious effect once I switched the power back on. It was difficult to know which way to turn it since there were no +/- markings on it.

As you say it could be some other problem or I may have caused some damage when the switch was de-anted

I'll take up your suggestion and try again with the power on and the pump active.

    Appreciate the advice.

  8. Hi,

On a related topic I have an Hitachi pump that stopped working due to ants in the pressure switch. After cleaning the ants out the switch initially functions OK as the taps are turned on then off. However after an hour or two the pump comes when a tap is turned on but then stays on.

I'm planning on buying a new pressure switch but the local Global in Kamphaeng Phet doesn't stock them so I thought I might see if I can adjust the settings( the cover does say don't adjust anything so I assume there is risk involved but.... )

I'm guessing there should be 2 adjustments-one for the lower pressure limit and one for the upper but I can only see one screw on the top that could have anything to do with an adjustment.

Any suggestions or does anyone know of a store around Kamphaeng Phet or Nakhon Sawan that could stock a replacement pressure switch?

  9. I will stop if I believe I can be of assistance and I am not unduly putting myself at risk. The latter is a judgement call.

As an example a year ago an old bloke decided to ride his bike across 3 lanes of 80km traffic without looking. I saw it happen in slow motion. The second car ahead of me collected him. I stopped, put my hazard lights on and got out to help. The traffic weaved around us.

At the same time a dreadlocked Thai motorcyclist stopped and got off to help. The drivers of the two cars in front of me were at a loss and didn't seem to know how to respond.

The motorcyclist and I took a quick look, he had a large bump on his head but was conscious. No other obvious symptoms of other damage so we moved him and his bike off the road away from the traffic and called for an ambulance to get his head checked. The motorcyclist thanked me for stopping, I reciprocated and then I drove off.

This is a sample of 1-doesn't prove anything other than you won't get ripped off everytime and you may be able to help.

  10. The internet banking with two factor verification using a password and text message is pretty secure provided the banking and text are on separate devices-e.g. PC and phone or two phones. I've hesitated using mobile banking on the same mobile I receive the verification test message.

For what its worth I've been using internet banking with Australian and Thai banks in both countries without issues for a number of years but keep the text receiving device separate from the internet banking device.

The next step up in security used by some Singaporean banks is to have a security token that generates a code that has to be used to verify the transaction but this necessitates another bit of hardware to take care of ( and lose).

  12. Also saw the wheel plus stub axle come off a 10 wheel truck a week ago- this time in Kamphaeng Phet. Maybe a generic problem when they are overloaded. The wheel spun across the road missing everything and ended in a ditch- very lucky for everyone. The driver seemed unaware it had happened but eventually got the message something was wrong from cars passing him and people pointing to his truck so he slowed down and we managed to get him to pull over and showed him the problem. He actually thanked us-surprisingly enough in English.

  13. In the last two weeks I saw-

A cyclist try and pedal directly across 3 lanes of busy 80km/hr+ traffic without looking-he was collected by the second car in front of me. We 3 cars stopped, everyone else weaved around us.

A motorcycle down and the motorcyclist's body in the back f the Hilux that had just hit him.

A nightime incident with a couple of motorcycles lying on the side of the road and a group standing around discussing the accident

A large truck on its side just off the road in a ditch with a group locals discussing the situation

A rear wheel plus stub axle detach from a truck and spin across the road past oncoming vehicles-missing the lot of them.

About par for the course I reckon.
