  1. Just in case you were curious about the hypocrisy of this environmental phase Leo is going through, and the involvement of Thai government... From Wikipedia:

Controversy arose during the making of the film (The Beach) due to 20th Century Fox's bulldozing and landscaping of the natural beach setting of Ko Phi Phi Lee to make it more "paradise-like". The production altered some sand dunes and cleared some coconut trees and grass to widen the beach. Fox set aside a fund to reconstruct and return the beach to its natural state; however, lawsuits were filed by environmentalists who believed the damage to the ecosystem was permanent and restoration attempts had failed.[4]

The lawsuits dragged on for years. In 2006, Thailand's Supreme Court upheld an appellate court ruling that the filming had harmed the environment and ordered that damage assessments be made. Defendants in the case included 20th Century Fox and some Thai government officials.[5]

After the film premiered in Thailand in 2000, some Thai politicians were upset at the way Thailand was depicted in the film and called for it to be banned. The depiction of the drug culture was said to give Thailand a bad image and having a statue of Buddha in a bar was cited as "blasphemous".[6]

  2. It was a funny clip. It made more fun of Americans than it did Thais. And Thais are involved in the exact same behavior. THE EXACT SAME BEHAVIOR. So spare me the tarnished reputation line.

The SNL skit was professionally made, so accurate in its jokes. (The guy pretending to be German to go to Thailand was so on the mark, and very funny) Had me rolling. I fail to see how anyone can take it so seriously.

This is not the "serious" world I live in, and I don't think it's the world Thais live in either. Look at how Thais pick apart ladyboys in their commercials. And what about that optical commercial, a real one, not a spoof, of a group of theives who drink what they thought was yogurt from a sperm bank? Did you hear sperm banks across the world saying their business had now been tarnished. Don't answer that. I don't want to know. :)

  3. Consenting adults. No prostitution. Okay, sex toys are "illegal" in Thailand, but you see them everywhere being sold in daylight on Sukhumvit. And these people in Jomtien were using them, not selling them. Much ado about nothing.

I do wonder how much "swing" that 61 year old still has in him, though. I suspect his "open mind" is bigger than what's required for an orgy. Ah well. My guess is he used to invite multiple guests over to his room, and then got the idea to open a hotel specifically for this purpose. Open-minded pervert turned entrepeneur. I'm sure this will be the last we read of anything reported on as to followup to this story.

  4. Thai teacher salaries are crap. I don't blame them too much for having a job on the side, streaming in some cash from another source such as sales. Just keep it away from students. They should not be clients. Seems like common sense, but to use the tired phrase, "This is Thailand."

The flip side of this coin is this. Thai teachers go above and beyond in certain aspects of the job that a Westerner would balk at. At my former Thai school (K-M6), Thai teachers practiced on their own time for a massive celebration for the school principal. Hours of dance rehearsals, singing practice, comedy skits. You name it. They did it. In order to get funds for the show, they sold homemade food items on the school grounds, and naturally the students were the likely customers. It was odd. Of course to attend the production was free, but students shelled out money for goods so teachers could have enough money for make-up, costumes, props, etc...

Just my 2 baht. Thanks for reading.

  5. She was not executed, she was murdered; there is a difference.

Execution is simply planned killing. This fits the bill.

Have to disagree with you. This was not an execution as the person being killed usually knows they are about to be killed (as in they have been tried in either a real court, court of the jungle, or war) An execution is when a person is tied, or asked to kneel and then shot. Or asked to stand against a wall and shot. Or...well, you get the picture. This poor soul was murdered in what appears to be a drive-by shooting with the victim driving herself. She probably didn't see it coming. And there was certainly no judgment handed down to her prior to this violent act. It's not an execution.

  6. Saw something similar in the countryside with the local idiots fighting with a "rival" neighborhood. The concert was fun up until a few punches and kicks were thrown. Police quickly shut down the singing and dance show and people dispersed. Of course, the vendettas netted a kid stabbed in his own home later in the week. Really dealing with the lowest common denominator of society here sometimes: uneducated, working poor, alcoholic ... ah well. It's a fun place to holiday at least.
