  1. I have a two year old son Thai/British who has recently been issued with both UK and Thai passports here in Thailand; (British one through Hong Kong). I want to take him to UK and to avoid issues with his Thai mother want him to exit on his British passport as I would need his mothers permission for him to leave on his Thai passport, or so I believe.

Bearing in mind that he obviously has no 'entry stamp' or 'visa' on his British Passport I don't know if immigration would let him out. I would hate to go to check in and be told he can't leave due to the absence of a tourist or other visa in his British passport or he can't leave on his Thai passport without a permission letter from his mother.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  2. I think the original question was" Can I get a married mans additional pension for my Thai wife who lives with me in Thailand?'

I believe in the UK it would be an extra 58 pound per week.I would like to ask" Is any one on this forum successfully claimed it?

I claimed and successfully got the additional pension for my Thai wife; it took a few months but eventually came through with no notification the bank deposit just increased?

You need to download the forms to complete and will need all the relevant documants, marriage certificate, etc. but you should get the extra pension within a few months - frozen of course!

  3. South of Surat Thani follow the signs for Krabi and take route 44 seperate carriageways N&S bound - hardly any traffic so you can put the hammer down. At the end you meet the Krabi/Phuket Road (right turn) and from there on it's well signposted. Did the run last weekend but onward to Korat and we avaraged 100Kms. ph. My mate does Phuket Pattaya in 12 hrs.

Good luck and safe driving mate!

  5. If you're near Kamala 'The Bakery' at the Patong end of town sells a good large sized wholegrain loaf for around 130 Baht but you may have to order it as they don't carry a big stock; the bread is fresh and the Cafe Owner will slice it to your preferred thickness. They have other smaller size wholesome brown breads and white baguettes as well.

  6. I was with my family at Surin Beach late yesterday afternoon and apparently a 12 years old Thai boy was missing believed to be drowned also. The mother was at work but arrived later obviously distressed but being smothered by people wanting to give her advice.

No news yet in the media?

  7. Baby due in February not married to mother and most probably never will be I cannot make up my mind whether the baby should have mother's surname and Thai first name my surname and English first name or a mixture of both the child will stay in Thailand to live and school any suggestions

My Thai wife and I just named our recently born son using an English first name, mothers surname and my surname; had a bit of an issue with Saraburi Registry Department but got it sorted throough my wifes connections within our town. In later years he will require a Thai name for miltary service; by then he can choose his own Thai name.

    Good luck!

  8. I am having knee problems and from past experience believe it is the joints breaking down.

Is it safe to arrange surgery in bkk rather than return to uk, arthroscopy or knee replacement.

Also any ideas about prices for these procedures.

    Many thanks.

I had my knee sugery at Bumrungrad a few years ago and it was a complete success great after care etc. The Surgeons name is Dr. Panya Wongpatimachai a very professional Surgeon who does at least five similar operations a week and I nice guy to boot!

    Good Luck Mate!

  9. I think I have bits and pieces of cartilage floating around in my knee joint. Are there any really recommended surgeons/facilities in CM - or is it down to the Big Mango and, if so, where do you recommend ?

Will be appreciative of any advice.

    Thank you.

    Cheers

    I had mine done at Bumrungrad Hospital in Soi 3 Bangkok;

  10. For all fellow members and retirees in Thailand I must post my experience and shock at the lack of documents required when I went to Suan Phlu Immigration office yesterday to check if I had all the required documents for my Retirement Visa renewal as the goal posts appear to move at will in various offices.

    This must be a first!

I was later than planned leaving Saraburi yesterday and so decided as I would be too late to visit the British Embassy to apply for my police clearance and confirmation of income (pension) letters before they closed I decided to go to Suan Phlu to make sure I had all the required documents for the planned return trip today to apply for my visa renewal. I went into room 101 and spoke to the lady officer who issued my first retirement visa last year and as before she was very pleasant and helful and when reviewing my bundle of documents (Bank Statements, pension transfers from abroad, copy of passport etc.) she asked if I had filled out the application form and I said "no I will come tomorrow when I have the Embassy letters". She told me that as I had submitted the letters and proof of pension last year I didn't need them and told me all I needed was a copy of my passport ID page, copy of last years visa and a copy of the TM document and of course the fee. No bank statements no Embassy letters just the help of a very pleasant and helpful Immigration Officer so I walked out of Suan Phlu less than two hours later (she went for lunch in between) with my Retirement and multi entry Visa renewed. I was to say the least pleasantly surprised and shocked having read some of the posts from disappointed members on here.

  11. Thanks for all replies. I'm currently thinking of Nong Khai which I believe has broadband. Remote Thai islands, though idyllic, are out of the picture owing to poor infrastructure. The southern people and the enervating climate are also negatives for me.

Ref Muak Lek, I have lived in Muak Lek for over 12 months now and it is a great place, nice people and some good restaurants. There are several vineyards in the area making good red wine and the only tourists I have seen are mainly Thais on public holidays. We have never had any major problems with internet connections but the TOT lines do drop out occasionally. TOT have Broadband available as you prefer.

Good clean air, quiet and no pollution is a plus for me and 'er after living in Rama 4 Road and Don Muang in the past. I am currently working in the Middle East and looking forward like hel_l to getting back home in April for Songkran.

  12. She will have to be interviewed at the Australian Embassy and must have a sponsor letter from the people in Australia with her.

She will find it easier to get a Student Visa if she has documentation regarding where she intends to further her education.

Be aware that the Australian Government know all the tricks so if this is just another way to get the Thai GF to Oz then it will have already been tried. My advice would be for her to have as much paperwork to prove that her application is genuine or she will be on a loser.

Tourist visas for single Thai females are difficult to obtain due to international restrictions imposed by the Thai Government - not the countries they intend to visit.

From a man that has been there, seen it - done it!

    Good Luck!

  13. I go to Laos about once a year and always make sure I have small denomination Thai currency. Having a supply of dollars is also helpful.

However, I have never gone to anyplace but Vientiane. Outside the major tourist centers, I suspect that it would be much harder to deal in anything but Lao Kip. In the city, however, everyong is used to dealing in both Baht and Dollars.

The problem is that the Kip is worth so little that you have to have a large roll of bills in your pocket. Also, I have heard that you can have difficulty converting any excess Kip back when you leave Laos.

I worked in a remote area of south eastern Laos for two years and you will find that Thai Baht is welcome especially in places like Vientiane and Savannakhet. You will find that even in some of the off the beaten track vilagges will also accept Thai Baht. USD is commonly used in Vientiane especially in the hotels and restaurants. My advice would be to obtain some Kip (can obtain on arrival) but keep some small denominations of Thai Baht for local shopping.

ATM's were only available in Vientiane when I was last in Laos and I am told only for the banks customers so carry enough cash for your trip. Take care and enjoy your visit.

  14. On what basis? If you are married to a Thai you need copy of marriage certificate and her ID card and first application may only be one entry from recent reports - currently KL seems more willing to provide for first time applicants. Do not believe there has been any problem for those making second or later application at Penang.

Thanks for the response Leonai & Lopburi 3 and I am pleased to report all is well and I have my visa. I decided to try for a retirement visa at Suan Phlu and thanks to two very helpful lady officers I was granted a 12 month retirement visa and 12 months multi entry visa, so I can leave and re-enter the country without an hassle. One condition is each time when returning I have to report to Suan Phlu to have my passport stamped.
