  1. Thanks guys, I didn't consider that cobbler wasn't really a mainstream word anymore. Ahh, the loss of language, so sad.

I'll try and find that guy croftrobin, thanks. I only need a cheap and nasty repair of the heels until I get to the UK in a couple of months and have them redone properly as I doubt that the chap will be able to re-layer the leather where it has worn down, he'll probably just use rubber/plastic. I should have just stopped wearing the damn things when they wore past the rubber protector but they are just so comfy!

  2. I need to get some shoe heels repaired, and I am sure I have seen a cobbler on the side of the road somewhere in Surin.

Can anyone jog my memory on where that might have been?

    Cheers.

  3. There is a small pool in the Phetchasem Hotel that you can use as long as you are ordering something to eat/drink. It isn't huge. and it is quite old. I like it as my Son can swim, and I can sit by the pool eating lunch and drinking a couple of beers. The food is pretty good actually, and decent service too.

  4. It's real simple, I only had 1,000 Baht notes.

He only had 200 Baht worth of Riel in change. I was expecting to pay a proper representative of a bus company, who would have made change. Not a dodgy taxi driver.

And you are missing my point, I booked a bus ticket, at a fixed price. The representative of the bus company, told me that as they had cancelled the bus, they would arrange a taxi at the same price.

Expecting to get from the border, to SR, with a free tuk tuk pickup, is not ridiculous, I have done it twice before, with that used to be a reputable bus company.

Unfortunately, this company seems to have lost it's edge. Which was the reason for my warning post.

  5. I've used the Ammco bus service from Chong Chom border to Siem Reap a couple of times in the past.

It was great, 350 Baht, including a free tuk tuk in Siem Reap to take you to your hotel.

But both times I used it before, I was the only person on the nice big aircon bus.

Now it seems they have killed the service.

I called up yesterday to reserve a ticket. Got to the border today, met the ticket guy same as last time.

And then he tells me no bus today, but a taxi will take me for the same price. I end up waiting 2 hours for the taxi driver to find some more people to fill up the seats. I was crammed in the back, no room.

We finally get to Siem Reap 3 hours later than the bus would have got there. And of course, the taxi driver has no change, I ended up giving him 800 Baht instead of 350. He finds me a tuk tuk, when I get out of the tuk tuk he wants paying as well, even though the taxi driver was supposed to take are of it.

So be aware, it looks like the great Ammco bus service is dead.

  6. I have had good success with ordering from Amazon.

The trick is to filter your search only on items that are available with Amazon Global service.

Amazon Global estimates the import duty for the item, and includes it in price with delivery. The guarantee is that if it turns out to cost more import tax, Amazon pays it out of their own pocket. If it turns out that it costs less import tax, Amazon refunds you the difference.

I've ordered some pretty expensive items, and also some pretty fragile ones (fishing rods), and delivery has been perfect every time. I have also received a refund on import tax for every item as it has been less than Amazon estimated.

  7. I read about 7 books a week. I recently hit the 1,000 book upload limit using Google Books, had to delete some!

As for what I read, well that depends how I feel. Currently working through the entire 4,000,000+ words of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series again, for about the 3rd time, as there were some parts I still don't understand what was going on.

  8. +1 for Steam.

I can't actually remember the last time I bought a boxed game. Most online games are delivered digitally, and Steam is a good platform for buying them, and keeping them updated automatically.

  9. Thanks Ubonjoe. Is this the bus that comes from the mukdahan bus station? Would it be better to go to the bus station and get the bus from there?

    I've done this both ways.

If I am going direct to Laos I usually just go straight to the bridge and get the bus there (but you might not get a seat).

If I stay overnight in Mukdahan the night before crossing (which is my preference as I don't like to be rushed), I prefer going to the bus station.

  10. visa for Cambodia is $30

why would anyone go anywhere with no money??

there has to be more to this. ie multiple visa exempt entries.

At Ranong, they will tell you when u go to immigration to stamp out if they will let you back in or not

I really don't know what the full situation was with the old guy who got kicked back. I wasn't there for the original discussion, I just caught the tail end of it.

As for myself, I met all of the requirements. I had over 20k cash in my pocket, I could have also produced proof of a plane ticket to the UK on the 19th of next month. I was asked for neither. I just got told "call your wife".

  11. Where is the 100k number coming from?

That is Penang's minimum financial proof to get a multiple entry non-o visa based upon marriage for being the parent of a Thai. They will also accept proof of income.

A copy of bank statement is mentioned in the requirements to get a non-o visa but it does not mention an amount. See: http://www.thaiembassy.org/penang/contents/files/services-20140508-110623-169095.pdf

That's different to every other place. Well worth knowing, thanks.

  12. Hi folks, just a quick heads up to let people know that it looks like Chong Chom border crossing is currently proving awkward.

I just spent a month down in Siem Reap, having left Thailand at the end of my last double entry tourist visa. I'm heading back to the UK next month, so thought I would pop back to Thailand for a few weeks and then fly to London from BKK.

My last visa exempt stamp was about a year and a half ago. So I figured I should be fine, as I had also been out of the country for a month. I was wrong.

I cleared immigration on the Cambodian side, and began walking across no-mans land. As I was doing this, I saw an elderly westerner wandering around near the Thai immigration entrance, he looked rather distraught. As I was sitting down filling in the immigration card, this guy came back to the immigration window. Couldn't help overhearing that they were not letting him in, and had told him to go back to Cambodia. Seems he was doing a visa run. The immigration official was very rude to him, shouting at him telling him to call his wife. The guy tried to explain that he could not go back to Cambodia, as he did not have enough money on him to pay the entry fee again. He was literally stuck in no-mans land. This fell on deaf ears.

Anyway, I finished filling in my form, and walked up to the window. The same immigration official started flicking back and forth through my (rather full) passport. This took a couple of minutes, after which he looked up at me and said rudely "Call your wife". I replied that I don't have a wife. This must have thrown him, because he grunted and then stamped my passport letting me through.

I have used Chong Chom border many times in the past, and this is the first time I have ever seen such rude, ignorant behavior from the immigration officers there. Personally, if they had turned me away it would have been annoying, but not earth shattering as I was only intending to transit through Thailand for a couple of weeks on my way to the UK. However, the elderly gentleman who was stuck in no-mans land is another story all together. He very obviously has a problem, that either the Cambodian or Thai immigration officials have to fix, they can't leave him stuck in the middle forever. I am sure that both sets of immigration officials are allowed to make decisions based on their own discretion. The logical thing would have been for the Thai side to stamp him in for 7 days and be done with it. But the guy behind the windows seemed more interested in wielding his power than applying it judiciously.
