  1. i saw an old chevy impala nicely restored, on the web, was for sale in bangkok but now gone.

anyone have a contact or a clue how i can buy a restored classic?

    thanks

Try Chalerm's garage. He is a relyable guy and skilled restorer. Big stock of restored and unrestored vintage cars. Some American cars, but more specialised in MG, MB, Jaguar. He also builds vintage bodies on donor car chassis (Fiat Topolino on Datsun) The garage is off Lat Prao 101. Turn right by the temple at the end of Lat Prao 101, direction Bankapi.

You will find him on the left hand side, a few hundred meters after the sharp double bend.

    Cheers

  2. Do you know the procedure when you rebody the Cortina, and recycle the registration book?

I have been told that an inspection is required by a Professional Engineer, then the body change is noted in the book, and excise tax is charged on the value added component. I too am embarking on a similar project and it includes an engine change, as well as substantial frame "repairs"

My concern is getting the registration book changed, and if I should do the body swap first then the engine change at a later date.

Any experience of first hand knowledge out there?

About the body change you are quite right. A "professional engeneers" signature is required, but in my case without any inspection. The engeneer will be appointed by the registration officer himself. He confirms, that he had the supervision over the rebuild and that it is technically approved.

Then the modification will be entered in the book. About the change of engine, I thought about doing it the same way you are thinking at a later date, but I decided to avoid the risk of being refused. That is why I am looking for a Cortina, so I can leave the block in keeping the number. Depending on the kind and condition of the engine, rebuild it with the parts of the 2 ltr Ford engine I already got. I have spoken to some guys who done the same thing. Generally it works like that, but like always in LOS there can be significant differences of approach locally. It seems that in the provinces things are easier than in i.e, BKK or Pattaya.

  3. just saw one at a tent house near minburi police station (black colour) this afternoon. another dark brown coloured parked near the road along suwinthawong road.

    Thanks blade63

Will put those on the list when I go to BKK next week will let you know about it, Good thing this forum. Gives me eyes all over LOS

  4. What are you building - Super 7 clone or something else?

Cortina MK-III has the same bits you are likely interested in right through the MK-V as well as the German Capri (non McPherson sttut models) and the Hyundai Stellar.

    robert

I did see a cortina, a brown one, on the road to the airport going from Phuket town, close to the big tyre center Manit center max i phuket town, dont know if it was fore sale.

Just look at my avitar then you will see. JBA Falcon Roadster. Started thinking about Super 7 but changed my mind, because JBA more suitable for every day driving. Also like the Morgan 1930 design better than the 7. Prefer to get the MK III Cortina, because I have some ideas for the left over body after stripping the subframes etc.

  5. There was one for sale in a garage on the way back into pattaya from Bang saray, it was an orange one, I took notice of it as it was practicly rust free, I seem to remember another one in the same road as the blind begger jomptien, it was oridgenal green with the crome trim and there was other cars in the garage from that time zone, ( triumph spitfire ) comming up from the blind begger it was a dusty garage on the left just before sukhumvit road, can look if it's still there if you want.

    Thanks for research pop3

If it is not too much trouble for you please check it out for me. Would like to have an idea before I travel down from Surin. As initially I will be using the book and some of the parts (engine, subframes, suspension, drivetrain) I prefer a scrappy one at low price, but if the price is right I would go for a well kept piece too. On thaisecondhand and one2car the going rate is between THB 20,000 and 60,000

  6. I am looking for a Thai registered Ford Cortina MK III 1600 or 2000 no matter what condition as long as it comes with a legal registration. Am willing to pick up anywhere in Thailand. Was just too late on two advertised ones on thaisecondhand.com Has anyone got one on sale or knows how I can find one. I rarely see them advertised.

  7. Hi folks,

Since it is almost impossible to import an exclusive car, I am building my own. The bodywork will be partly aluminium and grp.

Does anybody know a supplier of epoxy, resins and glasfiber mats, preferably in the Surin area. Must supply in bigger quantities than the usual repair kit.

    Cheers

  8. How much did it cost to get the Caterham in?

Gharknes just mashed up his Blackbird so he might sell you the ngine from it.

How much does he want for the engine. I might be interseted in it.

I don't think they are allowed.

Something strange about not having doors means they cannot be used on the road.

My friend has explained it before to me.

I have two running around Pattaya, a red one (brand unknown) and a yellow Caterham, also seen a Fraser in Bangkok (NZ lotus 7 style kit car) Talked to the owner, it was running a well modified (HKS gear) Toyota 5AGE motor. He assembled it himself in Bangkok, no problems getting it regsistered that I know of.

Do you know if it would be difficult to get a RWD donor car in Thailand ie an old toyota corolla AE86.

Plenty of those cars available. You might also consider Toyota Crown if you want a more powerful engine. It has similar dimensions as the Fords they use in the UK for the 7 replicas. Look at these links and you will get a good idea about what is available: www.thaisecondhand.com and www.one2car.com

Ground Engeneer I will PM you with some other info.

  9. Guys

Please: not to many tecnical questions, I moved to Thailand to have an easy life. :o

Because of my short memory, I have spoken with our block production manager (my wife), and can therefore correct I few "facts". :D I think the bag of cement is 40 kg.

The mix we used, was 5 parts soil/sand and 2 parts cement. from 1 bag of cement we made 60 blocks. If you use more clay-like soil, the mix can be 6 to 1, you make more blocks(70?), use less cement, and they will be more heat resistant.(keep the sun out)

Each block is supposed to carry a minimum weight of 70 kg.

We used steel bars to support the concrete, and we sealed all gaps both inside and outside before painting. The size of our blocks is 25 cm long, 12cm wide, 10 cm high.

    Trond

These bricks, same size 40 in 1 square meter are sold in our area (Burriram) for 9 THB a piece brought to your door. In our village there is one Thai family building a house with them. I am following their activities with great interest and thinking of building some bungalows with this system myself.

    Arthur

  10. G'Day

what is cost of Interlocking bricks in your area.

We are making this kind of bricks here and would like to supply anywhere in Isaan area if there would be intrest.

    Licenced construction company.

All bricks are preasure tested before delivered to the customer.

Currently 3 Homes for farang's under construction

    Im me for more datails

  11. Hi Guys,

Had all my rice harvest done, did not get as much as last year, quite a poor harvest, as planted later, some years outstanding some years poor, thats the way it go's, i am in the UK at the moment, i was wondering if anybody knows the price of Rice at the moment, how much one kilo, i can then work my quota out.

    Thanks Guys.....................................

    Hi Thaicoon

I suppose you will have dried rice stored by now. Price of dry rice round Burriram is now about 9 THB. I usually sell wet, but because of bad prices at time of harvest decided to dry and store. Have my own facilities for storage, so no extra cost. With the normal trend I suppose in January/Februari price will go up to about 10/11 THB Don't sell if you don't need to. It can be better than money in the bank :o

  12. Yes I do have a sorry tale to tell.

AND so do  thousands  of other falangs out here.

I am not trying to piss on your fireworks just make you aware of the most likely course of events.

Do you really think, your own course of events is the most likely for everyone?

Try positive thinking. It is just the way you put it. Or do you want your bad experience to put every newbie off beautiful Isaan? :o

  13. I bought a new AIT prepaid number in Chiang Rai less than a month ago and nothing was asked.

I thought it was on already, to get info of new customers and etc..

Waiting to see how this registration thing goes. So where should i register? I have received no info what so ever?

Will be extended till 2008 propably...

Anyway I don't get the point. What good can this do to anybody? Even lot's of money will be lost in terms of required staff handling the registering.

    ???

    :o

  14. Has anybody got an idea about the "hassle" of car registration.

To avoid the import duties etc. on car parts, I have built my kitcar overhere. Chassis and body from the scrap, with here widely available parts. i.e. Toyota, Mazda, Ford. As it is a completly newly built and assembled car, it has no registration from a donor car in Thailand. The contruction and safety would easily pass SVA in Europe.

Do Thai authorities rule something similar like SVA and what would be the procedure to have the car registred and licenced.

    thx

    Arthur
