Warning issued to Revolut customers after more than £200,000 stolen from two accounts
A warning has been issued to Revolut customers after takeover scammers stole more than £200,000 from two accounts.
Both victims saw their accounts targeted by fraudsters who passed the digital bank's selfie security checks just days apart, according to Which?.
The consumer watchdog said one of the victims was on the brink of bankruptcy after £165,000 was taken from their account, while the other had lost more than £40,000 in 10 minutes.
The criminals pretended to be part of the Revolut fraud team, calling about suspicious activity and passing a series of security checks to hack into the customers' accounts.
Which? said Revolut investigated both cases and would not refund any of the losses because its multi-factor authentication checks were completed.
Revolut has told the victims it will not refund the money, according to Which?Reuters
This included the use of a selfie to gain access to the account, a security code being entered after it was sent by text and a login from a new device after an email was sent to a registered address.
Revolut told Sky News it was aware of a "recent increase" in advanced account takeover scam attempts, and it was "deeply concerned" by the number of crimes being committed using fake phone calls.
"We are sorry to hear of any instance where our customers have been targeted by ruthless and sophisticated criminals. Each potential fraud case concerning a Revolut customer is carefully investigated and assessed independently of other cases," it said.
It also said it was "continuously strengthening" its fraud controls to stay one step ahead of new trends.

Sounds a bit bogus to me. Maybe it was competing with Gaza and Kiev

I use Wise, I live in Thailand and they say their debit cards not available here yet. Can I get a debit card from Revolut? I can use a relatives address in the UK.

As i said before, they were going afyer tax dodging Thais and not us. Sit tight and do nothing. Only react to clear instructions and nothing more.
Yes I agree completely.
A practice exists not to impose income taxes on foreign retirees under certain circumstances. That practice has NOT changed.
Yet some foreigners have mistakenly submitted tax returns which are not necessary and a few of them are now trying to suggest to the rest of us we should do the same.
And of course the revenue dept lap it all up.
Dear oh dear!

Potentially, downstream, the Immi Dept, the next time you go to extend your visa or exit the country, they may ask you for a tax clearance certificate, as they don in several countries, including the US.
We are now into 2024 and no one reports any such thing. And I do understand downstream.

You are OK as long as you have not spent nights elsewhere and they have filed a TM 30. eg a hotel.
If there is another TM 30 from somewhere, then you need to update again.
Immigration look at the last TM 30 posted.
Thank u for your helpful post.
Now I have been away for a few times and for a few days (BKK to Pattaya stayed hotel).
I have no idea if the hotel filed a TM 30 for me.
I thought if I in BKK on retirement extension and away from my permanent address in Thailand for a few days to another place in Thailand then no need to file anything with CW immigration?

You don't have to file a new TM30 for an extension of stay - this is presuming you already have one on file.
I will be doing my retirement extension in the next month. I have a copy of my Landlords TM 30 filed. I have not left Thailand since that was filed. So no need to make a new TM 30 right?

Just to clarify and it is my understanding:
If you do your 90 day on line and at the end of the 15 day your App is not approved then Immigration told me specifically there is another 7 days grace period.
If by that time there is no on line approval you can can go to immigration in person within the 7 days grace period and get the 90 day approval.
By going to the immigration in that period you are doing your App in person and not on line.
-
Yes in person or on line the grace period arises.

Use the 800k in bank for 1 year renewal for 1 year retirement Visa. Assume as long as there remains for the last year a minimum of 800k I can withdraw any interest accrued above that sum of 800k?

Agree: causing unnecessary stress and we need to get the precise new regulations, so we know where we stand and can then deal with it.

From the AMCHAM post above:
- Any transfers into the country will need to be declared. To avoid double taxation, you will need to file taxes in Thailand yearly and claim exemption.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Thailand/comments/16zh3k4/amcham_meeting_on_taxation_of_foreign/
However for Social Security et al under Article 20 US-Thailand DTA, not sure why you need to 'avoid' double taxation as those items can only be taxed in the country of origin whether taxed there or not.
So all retirees here in Thailand who stay 180 days in 1 year now need to file tax returns?!?
Please identity precisely the new law or practice which states this?
No need to say retirees are tax residents we know that but up until now no obligation to file tax returns and nothing in the new rule say that is going to change for retirees.

Completely wrong!
For decades those with retirement visas and subject to double taxation have not been required to pay tax here even though they stay here in Thailand more than 180 days per year.. The revenue dept has this as normal practice if not the law.
Ask any retired person in Thailand.
Or read all the links that confirm retiress are exempted or excused from tax here by general consensus of the revenue dept.
The fact that some retirees on retirement visas choose to pay tax is through their own generosity to put it kindly .....

OP: you have not mentioned that with Thai Elite...are they exempt?

June 30 2024 becomes the deadline if you stayed in Thailand since Jan 1 2024 - you are then a tax resident of Thailand for 2024. That is the date I will be researching towards and planning about.
Will I still be here because it is all OK; or will I be gone before then; or will I wait and see how it goes year 1.
So that it can be understood is it being said the new tax rules on income will only be effective after 180 days from 1 January 2024, namely June 30 2024?

Many years ago i was summoned to my local tax office in Thailand and asked about my income. I was told as I come from a country with a double tax agreement i was not liable to pay tax here. They issued me with a card and a number on it. I still have the card and they never contacted me again.
I presume when the new regulations come into force they cannot now claim I am liable to pay back taxes?
-
If I changed from retirement visa to 5-year elite membership, how much do I need to pay ? Under the proposed new law would I then be exempt from income brought into Thailand?

Get a good Thai Lawyer to read the lease to you before you stop the lease..so you will know what you can and can not do
Yes thank you. I am currently looking to get a decent Thai lawyer to advise. Though the first one I contacted quoted me 8000 baht per hour to advise.
Can I thank all those above who have given my helpful input.
Incidentally I am the OP. One reason I need to consider ending my lease early is for health reasons. I now need to pay a 5 figure sum for medicine monthly (not covered by Insurance) and amongst other things I need to reduce my expenses including rent. I did not mention this in my original posting as my health issues are a private matter.

I am a couple of months into my one year written condo lease. For various reasons I may decide to terminate my lease under which I provided a months deposit.
The lease says nothing about what occurs if I terminate my lease early though I assume I will forfeit my deposit which I accept.
But as my lease has 10 months to run can my Landlord claim for the outstanding amount for the remainder of my lease?
10 months outstanding?
Or is my sole liability just forfeit my deposit?
Thanks any input.

Update: after 2 hour trek to immigration.15 minutes after arrival I got an email approving my 90 day online! 15 days after submitting it.
I tried to tell them at the main counter my appointment was now cancelled. I took a look in the hall: teeming with people, mainly Chinese etc.

Thank you DrJack54 for your helpful reply above.
I will be at immigration tomorrow so hopefully I can sort my 90 day report then, but we shall see.
Now please do not quote me on this but I had a pleasant chat with an officer from immigration.
He in effect explained I was amongst many people waiting for my pending result.
He also explained and confirmed I have 7 days from my report date before I need to go to immigration. Nonetheless for various reasons i will go in person tomorrow.
I was told he has no access to 90 day report on line so could do nothing to assist on my app.
What is interesting-and I hope I have understand what is being said correctly-and I have no way of knowing if this is correct so do not rely on anything I say- but it seems on line and in person may be separate entities so to speak. I asked about did I need to cancel my pending. He said no. Seems it may be can be given an in person receipt and later also an on line one.
I may have completely misunderstood and I may be proved totally wrong tomorrow. But what I will do is do my in person report showing the receipt from on line from 3 months ago; get my 90 day paper and say and do nothing re cancelling my on line App.
Worth a try...right?!

Do it on the web not the app. Did it at 11PM last night, got approved at 11.30 AM this morning
Can u explain for a non computer expert do it on the web not on the app?
Thank u.
I have waited almost 2 weeks for my approval or not and my info is marked "pending".
I am going to CW tomorrow.
Assuming it is finally approved how will that affect me on line?
I assume I need to cancel the on line application?
What will happen next time for my 90 day report? Can I do it on line or need I go in person?
Many thx any input.
I'm looking for basic health insurance just for major emergencies
