  1. My girlfriend of 6 years and I are planning our first trip to the USA this winter and now my family suggested we get married while there to save another trip for a wedding.

She has a tourist visa and we're thinking of a simple ceremony in Las Vegas. Our future 10 year plan does not include relocating / immigrating to the US.

Just wondering if anybody has gotten married in the US while on a tourist visa and is it a legal marriage?

Perfectly legal. Just did it in May and now wife ready to immigrate to states in December.

Actually you could have her stay and put in a I-130 and when notification of receipt put in I-129f k3 visa . she just stays til embassy time. In your situation You might apply for regular immigration and if you have lived 3 straight years i Thailand after you return apply accross the street at the Homeland Security(Immigration) if not apply states. I say that in as much you may want to secure her a green card as they are getting whacky unless you are and wife latino. Doesn't mean you have to immigrat just visit yearly first two years and then every two years there after. Things are a changing

The jest though it is perfectly to marry on a tourist visa

I too will miss but only because of non impartiel BS they spread. Long ago they were a beacon , but hardly in the last decade.

  3. It's not that easy, though.  The IRS can still tax you if they determine that you are renouncing your citizenship for tax avoidance purposes.

An American friend - a successful businessperson living in Thailand - who looked into renouncing his US citizenship said the US state dept told him they would accept his renunciation, but that he would be subject to US income tax for a 10-year period afterwards.

It wasn't clear to me whether this was a ruling that applied only to someone considered to be renouncing US citizenship for tax purposes, or for all ex-US citizens.

The IRS ruling is an expansion after the fact of the Eastern Tycoons Campbells , Hersey, etc family's going to the Bahamas in the late eighties and establishing citizenship there. it was more for the death tax than income tax. It did open a new offesive aginst US tax payers at first if you had 5 mil above passed thru congress and of course twisted into a new virus verdit of 10 years. However, if you don't reside in US in any 12 month period you have the 78,500 exemption. If anyone pays with that they need to go back. For one, never declare a wife for tax purposes , never get them a tax ID so you can claim a pittace of return. There are hundreds of ways not to pay . The US doesn't deserve or need the expats money as we who are here pay tax's in some cases and if not greatly enhance the riches of our loved ones around us. I have dual citizenship of US(born farang) and now Thai for 3 years. ON travel I leave on Thai enter depending on location Thai or US and always return on Thai.
  4. In 1980's crime by armed thugs was blatant in Florida. Many tourist mainly English and Germans were being killed. The state inacted the concealed hand gun law and murders again dropped dramatically.

The reason for these actions are that most but not all criminals are really cowards so they really can't take a chance of being hurt themselves

    Reality Check: http://www.youdebate.com/DEBATES/gun_right_to_carry.HTM

When Black and Nagin compared crime rate trends two to three years after RTC laws were enacted with rates two to three years prior to enactment, they found no clear pattern in the results indicating that RTC laws reduced violent crime. In some states violent crime decreased after these laws were enacted, while in other states RTC laws were followed by increases in violent crime. When state RTC laws were examined separately, the laws had no consistent effect on any category of crime. In states which did experience reductions in violent crime, one cannot confidently attribute the reductions to RTC laws. For example, Oregon's RTC law was associated with lower violent crime, but the legislation which eased restrictions on concealed gun carrying also extended waiting periods and strengthened background checks for handgun purchases. The reduction in crime could be just as easily attributable to the new restrictions on handgun purchases as to the eased restrictions on carrying permits. As discussed above, there are several factors that could just as easily explain the declines in Florida's homicides during the early 1990's that Lott and Mustard attribute to the delayed effects of the 1987 RTC law. Sir, Please give national accredited stats. The one you just sited is a canned opinion

  5. Well, all I can say is I'm extremely unlucky, because you all seem to have caring in-laws. I've paid dowry in the form of a couple of plots of land and several other payments when requested, but never so much as a grunt from her mother. I mean, it'll be months before her mother will telephone and it'll always be a demand for money, no how are you to her daughter or is my grandson ok.

To put you in the picture:

When I first met her mother I did all the sawatdees and wais (very high), nothing back. Had given her mother money a few weeks before and just after my sawatdees were questions of money. Few years on...have the baby...no visits from mother in hospital....eventually turns up at the appartment (2 months later) - nothing for her grandson (not even kisses) but plenty of money talk with her daughter (my wife) and lots of argueing ensued, to which I told her to get the **** out and stop raising her voice in front of the boy. Took the woman about 6 months before she put her hand in her shallow pocket and actually bought her grandson anything.

I was actually praying at the time Toxin was paying out millions to families of the ones who'd died from the bird flu, that her mother and several of her siblings (namely 3 of her worthless, lazy brothers) would contract and succumb to the disease.

They may be of peasant upbringings (my wife and one of the brothers are the only ones with any real education behind them) and her mother has money coming in and land, but how much education does it take for one tiny thankyou...thai or English.

Anyway, as I said before, any phone calls for anything will fall on deaf ears for me from now on, and the wife even had a big resounding no for her mother when she telephoned last month.

What a caring Democrat attitude. Of course, that is your picture blinking with the president?

  6. Whew!

I have always tried to stay clear of the issue simply because of the passions on both sides of the issue. This is mostly a US , Canadian and Aussie thing in the passion side.

To me to address the opening author of this thread I woiuld protect my family at any cost. However if you don't need to live there don't. As principle goes so far especially if you are over 50. Disengage. I had to in 98 in Kanchanaburi which I addressed on another thread.

That said I have read on here such really outlandish stats concerning guns. I know our English on here gave up thier rights long ago to have firearms. I say only to that look at the continuing surge of weapon related crimes comitted in your UK.

In an ideal world there would be none , Right! Wrong some AH would have them.

There are a couple of well documented cases in the US about citizens protecting themselves. 1. The Sullivan Act in Ythe State of New York. The residents in New York City were so clambered by organized crime that in 1908 they armed themselves and crime dropped by 90 %. The cirminals were outraged as their profits drop dramatictly. The criminals bought off State reps and Judges so to pass the Sullivan Act that decent abiding citizens could not only carry weapons but could not own them. We saw what happened.

I spent my early years as an officer in the US Army in combat. I later was restored to my actual comissioned role as an MP officer but served in CID til leaving the service. I trained many police forces in many countries in Swat ops to include some metro forces and US Goverment anti terrioist units.

That said taking a human life is a sin or if you like dispicable act a human can do. I don't like the idea of a looney or under trained person having a gun. I don't have a loaded unsecured gun in my house but I do have them and would not hesitate to use them. I do have security that can withstand 6 to 7 minutes of of concentrated effort so I can prepare myself.

on another thread a gentleman said how about an ambush, Well any well planned and carried out op might secede. However I watch my mirrors and never ever take same routes, just old discipline and training

Another issue put forth here is that most criminal steal guns, boderdash most are bought illegally. In the same logic as some on here a gun is taken and used once BS it is reused many times and is by the novice criminal. The professional never would as if caught he goes down for more than one crime

It is is illegal in Thailand to own a gun by a farlang . It doesn't matter if you are PR or not. I can and do and hope I never have to again use. If you have a wife maybe you are in the south where you need but remember that Thais are lets say easily roused to high passion as are many farangs. Think.

Sorry for such a disjointed message, but felt should be said

  7. Some years ago had a run in with this Alpha Hotel. He was at time furoughed out of Kanchanaburi to Ratchaburi area. He was nortoriuos for his escapades. When I had run with him at my restuarant he pulled a 357 but lucky for me a couple of off duty police were there and when he saw them lowered his gun and walked out. I made a report but to no avail. I heard later he obtained the Guesthouse/restuarant by dubious means. He is scum.

Please tell us some more about this guy and this incident, will you?

Why did he pull the gun? :D

There might be a lesson or two in your story if we get more details. :o

The lead up to the incident is that my wife had asked him if he could pull up to the restaurant across a driveway from my place. He did but cussed at her. I arrived ten minutes later with truck load of goods from Bangkok. The evening went on and she forgot to tell me but the AH was at the other restaurant getting roaring drunk. Someone must have told him I was the owner and no farang was going to boss him around. He came into the restaurant and talking crap and pulled the gun on me. The two Police were friends and stood up immediately and as I said before he lowered the weapon and ran out. He is well protected by who he moonlights for and that is a senator.

That was the last day in Kanchanaburi I went unarmed. I was lucky that two police officers were eating at my place. This scum bag has killed more than once and that came from the police. Before I get jumped on about being armed I spent 20 years in law enforcement so I do know the responsibility of carrying. I do know that this guy only gets his due outside the judicary in that province. I moved to avoid any fuirther incidents.

In the 9 months I had the restaurant there were 7 murders of farangs in the city alone and no one ever brought up on charges.

    Unbelievable! :D

When did these murders happen and what were the victims' nationalities! :D

Where they reported in the media?

Was this before or after you obtained Thai nationality? You need a document from the police station for a legal fire-arm,don't you?

Thanks for telling the story of this psychopath!

    Snowleopard.

This happened during March-Dec 1998 . If I remember correctly a Brit, 2 Isralies, Finn and can't remember the others. Odd thing was most occurred on road that runs from Jolly Frog to Brigde over River Kwai. Runs past AH guest house but he didn't own it then. Only saw one blurp in Bangkok Post on one killing.

I was not a Thai citizen at the time but wife had gun and several Officers at the 9th Infantry offered their weapons. I carried because this guy had a reputation .

I made up mind as soon as could sell would and did. This incident occurred early Oct 98 and took me two months to get out of dodge. Errie thing was he lived same estate as we did . I had several family members living with us at time so we had around the clock security there. I don't think he ever knew we lived same estate.

Yes you do need to be a thai citizen and clear through police. The new regs call for only one hand gun and one long gun. There are waiting list now as most dealers are only allowed 2 of each a month to sell. That may be more than most want but the reality is that even most Thai business men and politicians carry small arsenals in their cars . I've seen M-79's MP5's, M16 and countless small hand guns carried in their trunks. This is still pretty much the wild west and especially in the provinces scores are often settled by violence usually a month to 6 later

  11. I can say this that you never believe a cop he has his interest im place first and then the truth. I say this having been a speacial agent for US goverment for twenty years. That said everyone is innocent in prison. In US maybe as high as 40% are. That said again in the teriost times it gives rise on both sides of the coin who is right(liberals and conservatives.

    ###### they weren't even part of the equation when the consitition was written

You know most blame the UD today for the worlds voes but really this century an d last 50 years wars was the result of the English, French, Spainish , Dutch and Portugese colonizims . The Americans have cleaned up the srewups of everyone else for a century or better. They themselves are still striking out in thier old boy networks

  12. Blue cat yes Khun Thai as went cajun while typing. Do that sometimes after too many Beer Chang. Now I say that to friends who have lived in US as they have aquired a sense of humor but if I used kon jon I'd be in a fight right now and not mousy rat

  13. Well I know the meaning has changed several times over the years but in the 60's it was used to by Thais to describe Farangs who were laid back but that things came easy for as in learning to speak Thai. In late 69 or 70 I thin the term change to describe a cheap Charlie Farang by the bar girls in Bangkok and esle where. I have heard it used as others have stated in various parts of the country. Words or phrases evolve and change to fit the times. I have used it to close friends in this way"Coon Thai kii nok"

  14. Dr. Pat Pong didn't want to infer she shouldn' t seek help in Bangkok and immigration is not the place she needs to talk too. The Uncle was just an after thought I put(probably shouldn't have) to try to illistrate that nothing moves swiftly here and usually the left hand doesn't now what the right is doing.

SBK the local police or regional office may well not know the procedure or want to ignore it. I would take it up with Royal Thai Police HQ in Bangkok. Setup up an appointment and you and your husband go.

Many people are under the impression that Thai immigration handles citizenship and they do not.
