  1. The best place for your first visit would be Chiang Mai University Gym. There is Judo there, which I teach, there is also BJJ. A number of these guys train in other gym around Chiang Mai. I'm sure they would be happy to point you in the right direction. Cost for Gym membership is 300 baht?year

  2. Thanks for the replies, I posted the question for my own benefit as much as anything i.e if (god forbid) I were to have an accident whats the proper way - it seems to phone the insurance company and let them handle it.

In general, yes, but you have to keep up with what is happening in cases like this. The insurance company may try to get the pay out as low as possible at the expense of the car driver, even though the payment meets the policy criteria.

If the other person involved in the accident had basis thrid aparty insurance this pays 100,000baht on death. I my case the other person insurance paid 100,000baht and my insurance paid 200,000baht. I think the calculation are based on age, income etc.

  3. Thanks for the replies, my friend is now consulting a lawyer as it's going to court.

The lady was riding the bike and overtook another bike on the hard shoulder which brought her in to the path of his car, there was a police car up ahead so he drove to them and they took him to the station, he wasn't drunk or speeding etc, she literally rode into his path, the family haven't been on his case, he has paid them some money with more to come later but he just wants to get it resolved legally first, the police didn't help the lady at all to the point of her being in hospital with no-one knowing she was there and the quacks not doing anything as they didn't know she was covered with any insurance - turns out she had insurance from her work and also my mates insurance did cover her, we asked the police about her and they said 'no problem' etc while all the time they had her ID at the station and were more concerned about who's paying what, how long has he been here, where does he live etc - anyway it's going to court.

    Thanks

From first hand exposure for a foreigner killing a Thai member of my family (hit & run, but arrested). First of all as your friend has been arrested, charged and proceeding to Court he would have had to put up bail, plus I assume the RTP would have informed immigration and his Embassy so he could not legally depart Thailand, is this correct?

If you friend is found guilty of a driving offense causing death it opens the way for a Civil Court action by the deceased family. If they have a good lawyer your friend will not be permitted to depart Thailand until the case is completed.

The brutal fact is that your friend, if the family agrees, can pay compensation that is negotiated in collaboration with the police. The prosecution process is then rescinded and no further recourse to Civil Court damages. Obviously his choice on course of action, I guess first step will be for his lawyer to obtain a copy of the police report and charges & take it from there.

This is not correct - the civil case does impatt on the crime case but if agreed before going to court this helps in the judgement handed down. The criminal case once in motion cannot be stopped. I'm going on my own experience in my case in Phayao some years ago.

OK, but as I said from my personal experience six months ago in Pattaya, from my post above, is exactly what happened. Compensation paid, negotiated by the police officer who had ownership of the case & did not proceed with criminal or Civil Court proceedings. Please do not say it did not, I am not delusional. Maybe different law enforcement players have different outcomessmile.png

Lets go into more detail-once the papers are submitted to the Court, which in this case I believe they have been, you cannot stop the legal process whether or not you have paid compensation. However, if the process has only gone as far as the police you are right you can prevent the case going further.

  5. From personel experience where death is caused resulting from an accident there are will be two cases: the civil case and the criminal case. The civil case is about agreeing compensation with the family. But beware in my case the Insurance did not look after my interests. The agent try to increase the compensation to the family so that he would get a % of the final sum agreed.

The criminal case is judged by a number of criteria: did you remain at the accident, compensation to the family, is this the first time, your background and whether you plead guilty or not . In my case I agreed the compensation in advance which helps when you go to court. Hope this helps. If you want to pm me I can go into more detail.

  6. Two years ago we lost MNet and the Super Sport transmissions from South Africa. At the time I enquired about buying the service legally from South Africa, but it was no longer being broadcast to Asia.

Since then I have made do with the Dreambox, but now that has gone, I feel no great compunction to go to full UBC. I only ever watch the golf and cricket (on Super Sport), but really wanted it for The Open this weekend!

Whenever I try to find Satelite options, I find that they are not CM specific. If you go to Bangkok they can pick up the cricket from Malaysian satelite, but that is not available in CM as I understand it. I believe there is an Indian satelite that is an option but cant find any firm details on this, and believe you may need a card from India.

I now have 3 dishes on my house, various satelite boxes, and my question is, what is my best option for a decent satelite service, if any? Ideally, news, cricket, golf and rugby.

I have tried the 'slingbox' option from my Sky UK subscription, but found it ok for a quick update, but not really watchable on a computer screen and not good enough quality for the 'big screen'.

There are several options for Chiang Mai if you want to pm me.

  7. I'd like info as well. My 6-year-old is taking Tae Kwon Do here in the states, and she really enjoys it. We are moving to Chiang Mai in September, and I'd love for her to be able to continue (even if it means switching to a different style like Judo or whatever). Cost is a big issue for us; currently we pay 50USD/month for unlimited training (she can attend any of the classes that are offered).

Tae Kwon Do is very popular in Thailand, including Chiang Mai. If you want your child to continue you can just look around Chiang Mai when you get here. It isn't as easy as looking in "the yellow pages" in some countries. There are a lot of TKD schools in Chiang Mai.

As far as I know, we have the only karate dojo in Chiang Mai at the present time. There is judo and aikido, but very limited. I know of only one judo and one aikido. There are karate schools in Bangkok and nearby, but not as many as TKD schools.

If you would like to know about karate you can PM me. I don't want to violate any forum rules by posting our web site address on the forum.

We are just starting Judo in the evenings at the MMA club, near the Railway station. Lesson are free but a small contribution to the Dojo is optional to help pay for the rental. There is a 6th Dan and 1st Dan Judo Coach (qualified in the UK). Contact me for further details.

  8. smtp.tttmaxnet.com

pop3 will be what was posted above, email.secureserver.net

I think you will find that the tttmaxnet site is no longer there. However, if you have a tttmaxnet web mail address you still use the pop3 and smtp of 3bb but use your existing tttmaxnet user name and password and you will find this will work ok.

  9. why is it that some people can't accept the fact that banks are not welfare institutions?

If you take time to read the article before making stupid comments. You will find that when you set up the N&P account you will be charged if you don't deposit a £500/month. I think the N&P are trying to encourage Customers to use this as a main account and not just as a free withdrawal using the debit card.

I also sure, like me, there are a large number of Customer that also save their money with Nationwide. The net effect will be for me ( and possibly other Customers) is to withdraw their saving and monthly salary and move them to the N&P.

  10. This is a copy from Money.com for those interested in replacing their Nationwide debit cards

New fee-free overseas debit card from N&P

A new fee-free foreign use debit card will be available in January next year.

Norwich & Peterborough Building Society has announced that it will scrap foreign exchange fees on its Gold Current Account Visa debit cards at the end of 2010.

The news will come as a welcome boost to frequent travelers after Nationwide axed free foreign use on its own debit cards on 1 November.

It had been the only bank or building society offering this perk – a crown that will now be taken by N&P.

From January 2011, N&P will no longer charge commission on overseas spending or levy a fee on cash withdrawals.

However, the Gold Current Account's ordinary charging structure will also change, and potential customers should be wary.

There will be a £5 a month arranged overdraft fee, a £19 a month unauthorised overdraft fee, and any unpaid items will be subject to a £15 penalty each month.

Customers must also either deposit £500 a month with N&P – effectively using it as their main current account – or make a minimum of five transactions every month.

If they fail to adhere to these rules, an extra £5 charge will be incurred. The fee changes, including foreign use, will apply to new and existing N&P customers.

Fee-free use abroad had been one of the most popular benefits of Natiowide's current account, swaying many customers its way.

But on 1 November, Britain's biggest building society started charging both 2% commission and a £1 cash withdrawal fee on foreign transactions for its FlexAccount. This puts it roughly in line with most other major banks and building societies.

The changes provoked a huge uproar from This is Money readers, with hundreds berating Nationwide's decision.

  11. My cashcard the most basic one has stopped working, they sent the new visa card but this doesnt work here either, they told me i cant use it outside of Europe?

Time to close the account down, it house several thousand pound in there aswell.

You should also be aware than from the 1stDec or soon after Nationwide are changing the way you access your Flexaccount over the Internet. You will require the card reader with the debit card to provide the security code to access the account

  12. Unless she had renounced her citizenship to the Thai government and had it approved (very unlikely) your wife is still Thai and should obtain a new Thai passport and use that for entry to avoid immigration issues.

She has no problem owning land as a Thai so there is no need for any change. She can also buy land but that would have to be her money alone and you would have to sign your understanding it was not marriage property. Laws did not have to change - only policy - the only policy was they would not register ownership if had foreign husband but that is no longer the case.

There is no need to get any tabian baan but as a foreigner you can have a yellow one if you want - Thai would require being on the blue one.

I serious doubt there would be any problem for social security but no direct knowledge.

Although we have a house in Chiang Mai, my wife also has a house and farm land in Bang Dong about 5kms from Dok Kham Tai. She has had no problems buying land there

  13. Hi James

I'm looking at the classifieds but I wanted to know if anyone has had any specific good/bad experiences with particular buildings/agents around here.

There's a lot of these types of posts on the Chiang Mai forum, but so many of them are way to general, including yours. Where does 'around here' mean? Are you happy to live anywhere within greater CM if the property is to your liking? Usually an agent will only drag their arse out of the office for 6 – 12 month contracts. Anything less is not really worth their time. Additionally, they will usually only work with properties above 10,000 THB/Mo, although there might be a few in CM that will show you around for less. Once again, what is your budget as you haven't said?

There are apartment buildings that charge less than 5,000 THB/Mo. for rooms with TV, Air, and Internet as an option. Now if folks start to type suggestions for such property only for you to say later that you're really looking for a 2 bed joint around the 25,000 THB/Mo price range, then such feedback is of little use to you. So please be a tad more specific with your request.

I am looking to rent for 2 months and possibly more if everything is to my liking.

Most apartment buildings and condos will require a minimum stay of 3 months (longer for some). Some places offer a daily, weekly and monthly rates, but they are going to be a fair bit pricier than fixed contracts of say 3,6, and 12 months, with longer stay giving the best price.

So once again, break down your specifics and i'm sure you'll get more valuable feedback to your post ;)

    Hope that helps?

    Aitch

I have a 80sq.m apartment for short term rent, pm if you are interested in more detail. Nigel
