  1. Met a girl online from Ayutthaya. Went to meet her in person and had a look around the temples with her friend in tow. After I invited her for dinner.
I was really looking foward to trying some real Thai food in a local restaurant. I let her order and all this food started coming to the table and it looked fantastic. I started eating but then I realised she wasn't actually eating anything just kind of pushing the food around the plate. Put me well off! So I stopped eating and finished my beer and then the waitress came and took all the food away again!
I can understand the Thai reasoning behind it now but at the time it freaked me out. I made my excuses and went and got completely pissed up.

  2. Maybe not the strangest- there are some stories I won't tell on a public forum- but I used to take the bus from Bangkok to Trad quite often. It was when they still used to play movies on the way. The thing is they were always the most gruesome horror movies with blood and Gore and screaming all the way. One of them showed a baby being ripped out of its mothers womb!
What was weird to me though was that there would be kids and elderly Thais on the bus and no one showed any reactions to any of the Gore. Any farangs onboard would be wincing and making comments but the Thais wouldn't bat an eyelid.

  3. Happy New Year !

Looking foward to decent Full English in Pattaya.

I normally go to the Queen Vic in soi 6 but the wife and 6 year old daughter are coming along this time so I don't really want to drag them down soi 6.

Any recommendations for a family friendly place? We're staying at The Hard Rock so somewhere near there would be preferable.

Just to confirm I would have no problem bringing them into The Queen Vic but just the surrounding area is a bit full on.

  4. Isn't it the Buddhist way to not intervene?

Isn't it the Thai way not to cause others to lose face by bringing attention to their shortcomings?

Doesn't Thai culture allow the motorbike guy to sue the truck driver for defamation, since truth doesn't matter in defamation?

Couple of months ago wife was driving us home from the beach and we came across an older Thai couple riding a samlor all over the road both of them worse for wear.

I normally try not to get involved but they had a little girl in there with them must have been about 2 years old.

I made the wife stop in front of them and grabbed the keys. We were in front of a Thai household with people out the front and the road was busy enough so I thought someone would get involved.

Not a chance. Ended up leaving them to it as I was so wound up I was going to punch one of them.

All the old girl was worried about was trying to get some money out of me for "petrol"

Reported them to the local police station but even they didn't seem interested.
  5. I would like to buy or order whole coffee beans from Thailand, preferably organic.

Any shop/brand/website you guys can recommend?

I tried Royal Project already, but would like to try others as well

I've been enjoying medium dark roast coffee from this cafe in Chiang Rai. The owner claims that it is organic and grown by Akha hilltribe people. Very smooth. I think they can deliver as well

  6. I love walking in Bangkok. I go prepared with face mask, sunglasses, hat etc. There's always a 7 11 if you need to cool down and get one of those cool towels. Best time is early morning. Head out at sunrise before the traffic gets bad.

  7. 1000 baht under £20. <deleted> why are the cheapskates so worried about giving a tip to somebody just because its supposed to be a free service. Well done mate you should be proud of yourself, don't let the cheap Charlies get under your skin. If you are in trouble price dosn't come into it,you just want it done and get the <deleted>> on your way.

"Money Talks and the Cheapskates Walk"

Put it another way. The Thai worker would be on 300 Baht per day so 1000 Baht is just over 3 days pay. In the UK, a similar occupation would get about 100 quid a day. So you would give similar (300 quid) to someone who changed your tyre on a motorway in the UK?

If my salary was 10 times theirs I would think about it.
