  1. Not easy to ascertain in a drive-by what the purpose of the place is. The layout is weird, and there are a bunch of specialty shops within that don't have much appeal. The long awaited Rimping was a disappointment. Everybody likes the full size Rimping, but what good is a micro version?

  2. A late season game in the Canadian Football League in the 1970's. Frozen field. Night game. Frozen fans stayed til the end. Calgary vs Saskatchewan, played in Regina. Final score 24 -23. Outcome decided in the final seconds. Name of marching band: The Brass Monkeys.

They play good hard football up in Canada. Lots of players who didn't make the cut in the NFL, but still great play. Some guys make a name up there and then go South to star in the Big Show. Two who did: Warren Moon and Doug Flutie.

  3. I can't believe I read this thread all the way to the end. I have passed by the place many times but never went in, as it had more the look of a bar than an eatery worth considering. I wish them well, in high season or low.

However, it was completely out of line for so many to name and trash the young lady manager. I'm surprised those posts were not booted off. It's bad form.

  4. I rented a Ford Focus in the States a few years ago. Had to drive from Seattle up to Vancouver BC to pick someone up at the airport. The vehicle showed only 9000 miles on the ODO. On the way back, heard a big POW! under the hood, and then the power steering went out. It took extreme muscling to steer the car 75 miles back to the rental shop, who did not express surprise.

Sounds like the OP's Ford had some hard use before he bought it. Next time...try Toyota.

  5. He's been at or near the top of his trade, and always talked about, since 1962. That's something. People have always had their own expectations of who he is, and how he should be, which is strange. They seem disappointed when he's not like they think.

I have seen him perform 4 times, in 4 decades. The first time was the best, 1964, Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Two hours of Bob, solo on stage, with his acoustic guitars and harmonicas. He was doing the Times They are a Changin' songs. He didn't smiled or talk much, just played, and left.

    A true original.

  6. I know that's not the official definition of what this thing is called, but you know what I mean.

But that's the problem when you use the wrong term ... things get confused and the supposed rumor has nothing to do with visas or extensions of stay and is something already discussed in other threads regarding the conversion process.

What you get each year is an extension of stay, not a visa. And what your acquaintance was trying to get was conversion to a non-imm O, not a visa or an extension of stay (although the first step in eventually getting an extension of stay).

I knew there would be at least one person on here who would set me straight on what I was trying (feebly) to express. The Wisdom on here is humbling, massive, overpowering, especially so in in this last troubled year.

  7. An acquaintance of mine, an Australian gentleman, is in the process of applying for a one year retirement visa. I know that's not the official definition of what this thing is called, but you know what I mean. I've had one for several years, and just renewed mine in August, with no problems, in Chiang Mai. Visa based on retirement, non-immigrant, good for one year, check in every 90 days.

Here's the question: This man says he was told that one may no longer apply for this visa at the Chiang Mai Immigration Center, nor can one get an annual extension renewal there. He said they told him that this can now only be done at Bangkok. ????!!

This sounds very incorrect to me, and it seems that this would be big news here on the forums. Can someone who KNOWS please tell us if there is any truth to this? I didn't want to tell the guy he's wrong, or was given wrong info, as things do change from time to time.

  8. The more time you spend with them, the more it will cost you. Rule No. 1: in any social situation involving check bin, farang pays.

Even if they are great folks, the cultural gulf makes it just as awkward for them as for you. Don't get all guilted up about "they think you don't like them." Everybody has a right to hang out where they are comfortable.

  9. The streets and roads in Chiang Mai are maxed out with motor vehicles. Very few motorists will respect bike lanes, and it might even lead to big resentment ending in intentional injury to the cyclist. Serious everyday cyclists in Chiang Mai accept the situation as it is, and find our own way through the mess, usually faster than the gridlocked motoring public. Waste of money, signage, and paint. Thanks for the thought, though. Happy New year.

  10. If you happen to be in KL, Malaysia, Low Yat Plaza is a must-stop-in for anything IT. It's a dizzying, fascinating 6 story bazaar. Allow yourself several hours. There's a decent food court in the basement. I love that place. We have NOTHING like it anywhere in the USA. The wonderful monorail stops right outside.

In Chiang Mai I would bounce around between Pantip, Icon, Computer City IT (?), various phone shops scattered through the malls, and Siam TV.
