Yesterday, September 27th 2013, Muang Chiang Mai Police launched a new Foreign Police Liaison force made up of Thai and Foreign residents. The remit of the group covers all normal police matters from immigration to criminal investigation. It is a part of a plan to prepare the province for ASEAN when the number of non-Thai speaking workers and visitors is expected to increase. Congratulations to my new colleagues.

According to the OP, in addition to 800,000 baht (or 65,000 a month proof of income) for a Non-O based on marriage, you must also have your wife's documents bearing the same surname as you.

If she doesn't have the same surname, then the marriage process was not completed according to the Thais. You have to go back to your wife's original registered location to change your ID card. Then you need to update all the other documents too. You get a special name change document. It's a pain...

I apologize - I did mean volunteer. These are the people working here on a charitable basis and with a volunteer status, then getting paid for their work. I am sorry, no sympathy from me. Thanks for the other comments - I think this thread caused some concern with people actually living in Thailand and married. If the extensions remain the same, then farang married to a Thai lady have more time to anticipate this type of requirement change and build up more capital in the account. Of course, if you are a farang lady married to a Thai man, you don't need to show any money...

Hi, I spoke to a girl friend who works in the police at Chiang Mai - and it turned out to be good timing. Last night, they were having a big immigration meeting to crack down on people doing paid work on a voluntary visa. So she asked the question about marriage visas and they agreed that in Chiang Mai at the moment, they are still accepting 400K in the bank for the non-O spousal visa. Since these are the guys processing them, I thought it might be interesting. She said the regulations are implemented differently in various places. It does not mean that things won't change here later on though.

Well, I have a marriage visa and need an extension. This terrible change for married people, if true, effects Thai citizens who are married to us farangs. For instance: my Thai wife when she read the post instantly turned around and said she would go to the bank to borrow the extra 400K and give it to me. I think if this continues, soon it will be the poor Thai spouses that will be supporting the farangs.

I have written to the embassy to ask for clarification and contacted a friend in immigration here at Chiang Mai... Let's hope it's just an mistake...

Revoking a passport doesn't require finding him. Just impound the cars and other hard assets. File charges and gather evidence. He's a money laundering fugitive. Thailand must go after him through international organizations.

I suggest his citizenship is revoked.

He brings shame upon Thailand and the Buddhist faith. He has harmed the spirit of the nation and should be treated like a public enemy.

Just changing to Marriage visa from Non-B, advised by a good friend who is senior at Immigration. The advantage is you can teach and not be dependent on a school for your stay here..

I'm afraid some of my compatriots may lack good grammar, but generally make up for it with good intentions. Any farang exploiting Thai people should be deported. We are guests here in this country.

Surprised that this famous scam still works. They showed a documentary on this back in the UK. Some US servicemen were caught in this and they had pay some cash the gangsters in front of the cameras. The gangs then attacked the reporters filming them. The way I see it is that the law is on the side of the people with the most money and clout here. The stronger always use the local laws to take advantage of the weaker, whichever country you are in. Just look at how the Federal government treats US expats, for instance. Here there is more freedom, but also less checks and balances.

The problem is that in some schools here you can actually teach without a police clearance check from your home country, especially if you arrived before those rules were in place. This means there is a nice assortment of this type of person legitimately teaching. Rapists, murderers, bank robbers etc...

You really need to add this to your work permit. A good friend who is in the Thai police told me you can add more than one purpose on the work permit. If you work in Thailand without a work permit you will be fined 30000 baht at the very least. Immigration are focusing on this issue at the moment to boost their revenue. They have even started cross checking records which is a first for them. My advice, if you want to stay happy in Thailand, don't risk it. There are Thai people who can help do the paperwork for you.
