Absolutely not! What are the reasons she needs to avoid ASQ? How long has her father been in OCI. If it is more than 1 day, she could have arranged to come back already. I understand her father is in ICU but if it was my father in ICU, I would be doing my tests, booking my flights and ASQ immediately. I wouldn’t be on a forum trying to get info about how to avoid ASQ. The sooner she arrives, the sooner she will be out of ASQ. I suggest stop wasting time and get moving with her repatriation. Have her call the Thai embassy to start the process and if anyone can help under this situation, only they can help. Not us in a forum!!!

Yeah she is doing all that. I'm the one on a forum seeing if anything else can be done to get her through quicker. Thanks for you input.

  3. hi to all ,

( sorry if my spelling of topic is wrong )

can any 1 tell me how many km per lt . i should get from my pick up , its a nissan navana 4 door , only just done 2000km , i only drive on express way from home to udon , at about 100km / hour . i,m getting just about 18km/per lt.

    thanks for any info ....martyn.

Sounds good to me, my Fortuner will give me 12.8 km/ltr on a run, but when I drive like a lunatic, I have been down to 10.8 km/ltr.

    Wish I could get 18Kms/ltr!

Theres another Fortuner Driver who drives like a lunatic, why is this? what is it with this car that makes people drive like lunatics?

  4. If, for one day, you were allowed to drive any vehicle through the streets of your town / city without any consequences whatsoever to get your own back on those crazy thai car drivers and motorcyclists that like to carve you up on the roads etc. ... what would you drive??

    Personally, I'd like to drive a turbo-powered JCB :D

I want to buy an old pick up (a blue one) for around 50K then drive in Bangkok and wait for a brand new car to drive too close to my rear end. THEN SLAM ON THE BRAKES :o

come to think of it, I would buy a fortuner and drive like the rest of fortuner drivers............

  5. Last week (Wednesday, Aug. 1) when parking at MBK Center, I followed the lead of their “yam” who was supposed to be guiding me into a parking space. Suddenly a boom like a clap of thunder rang out. I looked in front of me to see if it was raining – only to see the guard in front of me continue to signal me to keep moving forward.

But something was wrong. Instinctively I looked to my left rear to see that the car had a run in with a post. I said @#$%!, and drove backward – glancing up to see the guard STILL motioning me to move forward – only to stop when I got out of the car cursing him – I walked to the rear to check the damage.

Asking in Thai to talk to his manager, Khun (I forget his name) scratched his head in bewilderment as to why this farang was so upset. I drove the car up to the next level parked and asked another yam to speak with the manager of the guards. He took me to the Property Care Services office to meet with Khun Banyong Chandaeng, Service Manager, Integrated Services Division. Khun Banyong speaks very good English.

I told Mr. Banyong my story and told him I wanted MBK to take responsibility for the damage as I was following the guards instructions. He instructed Khun Somchai Kaewsrisuk (Inspector, Security Division) to investigate and he followed me down to the car where pictures were taken. Returning to talk with Mr. Banyong, I asked why the guards did not have adequate training. He admitted that while the guards received some training they did lack adequate skills.

Another investigating guard explained to Khun Banyong that the yam guiding me said he was telling me to move back – not forward. Yeah, right!

At that point I was really concerned and reminded Khun Banyong that safety wise, these were troubled times all over the world. Big shopping centers like MBK that attract Thai and foreigner alike are open targets. I asked him what would happen if there was a major security alert in the Mall, would his guards know how to handle the situation?

He was silent. His silence spoke loud and clear.

I strongly urge all shoppers to stay away from MBK Center until the Center releases a public statement on readiness to handle safety issues and comment on training of its guards. If one parking incident can not be handled professionally by guards who supposedly are trained to handle ALL safety issues, from parking straight in the garage to crowd control in case of emergency, we are all in danger.

Please tell your friends and neighbors. Spread the word!

  7. In my experience many people who complain about benefit cheats tend to be racists or people who rely on benefit themselves but are envious. I applaud anybody who can milk the system as it is a few less dollars that a country, such as the US, has to spend on guns and bombs.

    what????????

    you tit :o

there are to many sponges in this world!!!

  8. I have been having some work done on my house over the last few weeks so have had a few builders popping in and out, plus we had a guy from True Internet come and set up the wi fi for us. I noticed yesterday that my I pod has gone missing, I cant work out if it was the builders or true that have taken it.

whoever it was had rummaged through a bag and took it. I am really peeved with this but dont think it is possible to do anything about it apart from not let them back in again. we have a live in maid that I have instructed never to let the builders out of her site but this day she went home to visit her family and we only popped out for 30 minutes.

DONT LET ANYONE OUT OF YOUR SITE WHEN THEY ARE IN YOUR HOUSE.

  9. I'm sure it's been asked before, but I can't find the answer here. Can a farang get financing for a new car? If so, what are the usual requirements? Is the same true of used cars?

yes a farang can get financing for a new and used car.

you will need a Thai garrantor, work permit, 6 months statment from bank, passport, proof of address from your embassy, around 20-30 % deposite and some other paperwork which I cannot think of now.

I have bought two new cars over here both at the same time for myself and the Thai wife and both cars are in my name and on finance.

I know you can also get it on a used car as well because my mate did it about 6 months ago.

  10. BANGKOK: -- Bosses of the Brinton Group and other controversial securities trading firms were convicted yesterday in the Bangkok South Criminal Court of operating illegal "boiler rooms" in Thailand.

Seven foreigners, including Irishman John Martin Kealy, were found guilty of running "unlicensed securities businesses [boiler rooms]" - huge investment scams conducted from call centres in Bangkok on people in Australia and other countries across Asia and the Pacific.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a criminal complaint against seven defendants on July 26, 2001.

They were John Kealy, Scott Campbell Fisher, Paul Mary Hickey, Ronan Joseph Murray, Steven Hooper, Jason Garrick Rich and Adrian Robert Wallis.

An SEC statement yesterday said: "The Bangkok South Criminal Court convicted all seven defendants and sentenced each of them to two years jail and a fine of Bt200,000, but the jail term has been suspended."

Kealy and his colleagues were charged with "conducting unlicensed securities businesses (boiler rooms) in Thailand, which is a contravention of Section 90 of the Securities and Exchange Act BE 2535".

"These defendants, claiming that their offices were located in Thailand as well as in many countries, had induced overseas investors, mostly Australians, into making investments in securities of companies in USA and Canada.

"Different names of the Brinton Group, Sigama Capital Management, Lincoln Financial, and e.go trade incorporated, were used."This had not only caused damages to investors but also to the reputation and image of Thailand."

The commission said yesterday's conviction "reflects efficiency of Thailand's criminal justice administration in bringing wrongdoers into justice. Australian authorities have said thousands of investors were conned into sending their savings abroad, mainly to bank accounts in Hong Kong.

Angry investors in the Brinton Group banded together to form an association, which attempted to assist police in Thailand to recover an estimated 300 million Australian dollars (Bt8.4 billion) which people said they had lost.

Kealy - who runs the Dubliner and Irish Exchange pubs in central Bangkok - and his colleagues claimed the Brinton Group lost most of the money in the US stock slump.

A previous attempt to prosecute the Brinton Group heads was dropped by prosecutors, who complained that Thai police had failed to gather sufficient evidence to convict them of "complex and sophisticated" fraud charges.

  12. Hi, we will be relocating to Bangkok soon. Most likely to send our kids to Bangkok Patana but my office is in Silom. Would appreciate if anyone can help me with these questions :

    1. How long is the drive from Bangna (near Bangkok Patana) to Silom during rush hour ? Any other modes of transport besides car ?

    2. Any good condominiums around Bangkok Patana ?

    3. Any recommendations where to stay besides Bangna but not too far to the school ? My kids are still young, I don't want them to spend a considerable part of their day in the school bus.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi

I drive it everyday and I can tell you the longest was 1 hour 55 minutes, that was a rainy friday morning. normaly around the 50 minute mark. coming home, I wait until after 8pm at least.

  13. The New owners of the Xchange are doing a re-furb and will have to close for at least one month during the whole of August. at last working aircon and cold beer......................

  14. Why Thailand has crap food.

One reason is holding temps. Food cannot be held at room temp. It will poison you. Food should be below 40F or above 135F.

Another is cross contamination. You can’t use just one cutting board for chicken, pork, and so on.

Another is three compartment sinks. One to wash, one to rinse and one to sanitize. They are non existent in Thailand.

Next time you eat at a street side vendor look for the above things. When you get sick you can remember reading it here.

Why does Thailand not enforce even these basic standards? Anyone have any ideas? I don’t really have a clue.

The only time I had food poisoning in Thailand was when I ate in a five star hotel on Sukhumvit.
