  1. Clean, good for short laps. Have to wear bathing suit not shorts and a cap. In the gym you have to wear long pants. But they have now started duel pricing for one year membership; 300bht for farangs, 40bht for Thais. I have been a member for years at 40bht. and refused to pay the increase so they gave in. I never use it as I am a member of RBSC and The Polo Club and only wanted to support the membership. I also refuse to enter any temples or parks where they have dual pricing. The real annoyance is that BTS will not give farangs the senior discount of 50 percent. In fact this rule changed after they had sold me my card. When they stopped me they confiscated my card and fined me from the amount on the card. My friend who is more fluent in Thai carries a  copy of the Thai constitution in English and Thai that states that it is against the constitution to racially discriminate against even farangs. He has has had several confrontations where he had to read out the constitution in the BTS station at which point they dropped this insulting demand rather that call more public attention. I have lived here for 50 years and paid more tax than most Thais. All the Thais that I know or have been in business with always found some way to avoid paying. Long wait for Thai citizenship. Several friends who have gotten it even though being here less time, did so through some political connection: my friend is a general.

  2. Don't give them your passport they will use this as leverage to gouge you for as much money as possible. Never use UPS or  DHL. The local agent here have a blanket deal with the customs not based on cost of your item and what the can get extra is theirs. They will send you a bill with cost of item, plus shipping plus tax storage fee and what ever else they can think up and then add their handling fee. All bogus. They want your passport as leverage that you will pay. You only need to give them a copy,  if anything. Years ago I took this up with UPS's international office and they finally admitted that they were aware of this and had had many complaints but that the local agent had to be a Thai owned company and that they needed a clearing company in every country and were therefore powerless to do anything about this. I also just went through this situation with DHL. In the end they won. I should have known better. Use local post or be prepared to be ripped off. Local businesses here who import a lot use their own agents. They all know about the rip off from these companies. Don't go renting any jet skis either.

  3. I just went through the same experience with DHL ordering a camera case from Germany. The problem is the local agent. These international companies must have a representative in every country and here it must be a Thai owned company who gouge for as much as they can and the parent companies are powerless to do anything about it. Local businesses use their own agencies for clearing and avoid DHL and UPS like the plague. Everyone else should do the same.
