    Really good to have this topic raised as it will be very helpful to others to ensure they get their re-entry permit during the 2nd year of an “O-A” Visa if they plan to leave Thailand during that time. 

     

    A re-entry permit was not needed during the 2nd year of my O-A multiple entry visa (this was in 2013). I entered and left repeatedly during those first two years without issues. As you mentioned, they keep extending your permission to stay by 12 months every time you return until the date hits the 2 year max. I reventually did get the multiple entry in anticipation of a trip that might bring me back after that final expiration.

  2. This is much less than I suspected the drop to be.

    This could almost be covered by a reduction in visa runners.

    I thought that too at first, but then I don't think the number of expats comes close to the number of tourists. Would that be right?

    I agree the number sounds too low. I have friends with businesses and they are really slow.

  3. You can keep waiting until lots of people give you the answer you want to hear (and people will soon be saying you can do what you like just dont get caught). But soutpeel has summed up pretty much your only legal option.

    Slightly easier if American or married but not by much.

    Or you could search and read the answer 100 times already.

    In theory it's because of a treaty between the US and Thailand. Not sure how it plays out in reality.

    Called the Treaty of Amity for short.

  4. The airlines will indeed ask to see your paperwork, though they are more interested in the health certificate issued by animal quarantine than the export certificate. You get both at the same time, and they will only accept a health certificate from Animal Quarantine so indeed, you do need to go to the airport 3-5 days in advance to arrange this. Cost is minimal (50 baht when last I did it -- though that was for a cat, don't know if anything different involved for a rabbit).

    Not only will the airline ask to see this but when you pass through security and they see you have a pet they will often ask for the paperwork and also call the airline just to be sure all is in order and you have permission to bring the pet on board...permission that is never granted without the necessary certificates from Animal Quarantine. So there is no avoiding this, though it costs almost nothing.

    Thank you Sheryl. Excellent confirmation. When we came in the import fee was 50 baht so I expect the same on the way out. The only issue has always been making the time for the trip so close to our departure this coming Saturday. This isn't a pleasure trip - we expect to be gone about 2 to 3 years. The bunny is pushing 8 years old so it's hard to say if he'll be with us next time. Though we have had one make it past 12. Overall, I'm going to miss Thailand. Thank again!

  5. Always amazing Thailand. Has anyone taken an in-cabin pet out thru of Suvarnabhumi? Did anyone demand to see your export certificate?

    About $350 out of pocket to comply with Thai regulations when I brought a pet rabbit into LOS from the USA in 2012. From previous trips, I knew going in that I could carry the bunny thru customs with no one saying a thing. But I was moving to a new country and felt obliged to follow their rules.

    Now we're going back and and I'm hearing ALL pets must have an "export" certificate. Entails a trip to the airport within 3 days of leaving. Phoned the Animal station at Suvarnabhumi and they insisted this was the case, despite the FACT that the US has zero restrictions/requirements for bringing in pet rabbits. I asked if the Thai immigration officer would want to see the rabbits departure papers. And refuse to let him leave without them? Well, no, but United may not allow me to board.

    I think that's unlikely. United certainly didn't care if "rabbit papers were in order" when we left the US for Thailand. Frankly, I'd be shocked if the airlines here were acting as a Thai enforcer.

    Anyone have any experience?

  6. PDRC actions goes beyond protests, blowing whistles, and hanging banners. It's all about its own power to go where and do what it wants under the banner of "anti-corruption." It's not really about government corruption but about its own self-designated authority even over government property, government employees, and the public in general. And of all the government ministries PDRC chooses to impose its will under the banner of "corruption," the Public Health Ministry is not only the most benign agency buts leadership is non-political by profession - the Hypocratic Oath. Dr Irawat Areekich was right about his criticism of the PDRC behavior and the PDRC owes the ministry an apology.

    Ah. Central Dept store and the mall open at 10:30 am. Anyway Silom is no big deal. People walking in the street make the sidewalks less crowded. :)
  8. Will they be using tuk tuks, mototaxis,the BTS or just jogging from place to place now ?

    That's an interesting question. Last night I watched a parade of cars going into the Lumpini park stronghold about 9-10 PM. They were streaming in there for 20 minutes or more. And there were 4 huge buses in the mix. I don't look down there often but I've not seen that before. Couldn't tell if the buses were empty or full but there were a lot of cars so it was more than just a few people.

    Mike, when you say SalaDaeng is blocked at Soi 2, I assume you mean for vehicular traffic only?

    That's correct. It's blocked to automobiles. Completely open to pedestrians. Motorcycles can still go through to Silom. And they can traverse Silom except they basically driving thru the pedestrian shoppers. The vendors have turned Silom into a giant market.

    If you want to avoid some of the street crowds you can turn left when you get to Soi 2. A couple hundred feet on the right is an entrance to Central Department store. Go in, go to the 2nd floor, go out into the mall, walk toward the front and there is a short skywalk directly into the BTS station. That's the way we go.

  10. Shouldn't be any trouble to get a motorcycle taxi or a regular taxi once you're on Soi Saladaeng, or returning from Sathorn heading up Soi Saladaeng.

    But when I was there the other day, there was no regular car traffic being allowed on Silom Road between the BTS Saladaeng Station and Soi Saladaeng.

    As you say, the motorcycle taxis are still everywhere. But depending on the traffic, the regular taxis may not want to turn off Sathorn onto SalaDaeng to get you back to the BTS. Not unusual for the cars to be bumper-bumper backed up that far. Then SalaDaeng is blocked at Soi 2 so there they turn left and more bumper-bumper to Convent road where they can head back to Sathorn.

    When it's busy, we've been cutting them loose at Sathorn and walking. We get home faster, save a few baht, and they're spared a traffic snarl. Off peak they bring us all the way no problems.

    I will be going to the Australian Embassy on Sathon Rd next week.

    I normally get off the BTS at Sala Daeng and head North East along Silom Rd to Soi Sala Daeng (150 Mtrs) and turn right.

    Are there any known "obstructions" between the BTS and Soi Sala Daeng?

    No problem if you're walking. We live on SalaDaeng at Soi 2.

    Good advice. I for one have a Thursday flight to Hong Kong and am following the latest information. I appreciate the listing of cancellations but fear it may not be giving me an accurate picture of any effect of a slowdown or strike. For example, I think TG 2576 may not be scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. Flight tracker shows it hasn't actually flown Monday thru Thursday the last 2 weeks.
  13. Can we just go to the airport and get our multiple re-entry even if it is not an emergency?

    It does not have to be an emergency to get a re-entry permit when leaving the country at the airport.

    Both airports in Bangkok have re-entry permit desks open 24 hours a day. You can get a single or multiple entry there.

    I'm flying out for a few days mid next month and plan on a new multiple re-entry. I'd like to just go there now and get in in advance. Anyone know if that's possible and how would you get to the desk since I believe it is inside the security area at passport control?

  14. I live on SalaDaeng and can see Lumpini Park from my patio. Basically Silom Road is closed from SalaDaeng to Rama IV. Rama IV is closed but I cannot tell how far in either direction as the view is blocked. Ratchadamri is closed as far as I can see which looks to be at least as far as the park goes. I haven't ventured far out so I don't know what's happening on Wireless road on the other side or Sarasin Alley at the back of the park. The protesters have been in the streets and park since yesterday, not as many today it seemed. The SalaDaeng BTS looks busy but not overwhelmed like it was a month ago.

  15. I am sick of reading about agencies preparations for a shutdown....how the hell has it come to this in thailand? Its a joke. I propose a Suthep, Abhisit, Yingluck and Thaksin shutdown.....better still a shutdown on all thai politicians , past and present including a shutdown of all big businesses owned by their cronyies, also a shutdown on the corrupted army and police force, a shutdown on the ammnart and thai hi sos, a shutdown on the ever demanding peasants and farmers, a shutdown on their education system, a shutdown on their screwed up judicial system, a shutdown on two -tier pricing, a shutdown on scamming foreigners, ..........hang on....i am losing it! This country is beyong salvation. HELP!

    Nov 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. aviation regulator on Wednesday required U.S. airlines to inspect any General Electric Co engines on Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner and 747-8 aircraft that experience icing problems which could lead to loss of thrust and forced landings.

    The Federal Aviation Administration's decision to issue an airworthiness directive had been expected. The agency also required airlines to prohibit pilots from flying into high-altitude, icy weather conditions.

    The FAA said that in certain kinds of high-altitude thunderstorms, ice crystals entered and damaged the engines, causing temporary loss of thrust, or in some cases increased vibration with no loss of thrust. The problems affected nine flights, and in two cases involving 747-8 planes it affected two of four engines.

    The FAA said its concern was that "unrecoverable thrust loss" on multiple engines "could lead to a forced landing."

  17. UA leaving BKK gave me more than a few moments today to rethink what I would do with those miles I was planning to use next year. I can think of a lot if reasons to use them on the other *A flights in Asia but as I was looking at my options I started to wonder if we're getting complete information.

    Looked at flights in April up to about the 4th - UA838 747 BKK to NRT. On April 9 and till about the first week in May they're showing flight UA6 BKK-NRT, 777-200. Then on May 9, back to UA838 but now a 777-200. Same in June.

    It just seems like bad business to make that kind of announcement and still be showing flights available. Of course a few more 'unfriendly skies' from UA wouldn't be a shocker.

  18. Next we'll be banging on about how we've suddenly 'got game' and other locker room bullshit. What most of us have got is a willingness to pick up the tab - personally, I dont have a problem with that.
