  1. That is moo gata kenny, not a bbq like the op is talking about.

...7,5 years in kata I havent seen any here yet, keep on going to patong, anyone seen one in kata? If not, any land for rent to make one?

I know of one in Kata, Thai Na Road (up toward traffic lights), right down the lane with the Cat Bar on the corner.

I know of 8 Moo Gata's in Phuket. I love 'em!

  2. What about the Mookata restaurants?

They're Thai, you get a charcoal grill in the middle of your table, you pick up raw meat and fish to barbecue. They are 115 to 129 Baht all you can eat. Draught beer 109 to 129 B/Litre. The larger restaurants also have pre cooked food including pork, chicken and tuna steaks, sausages, pasta, chips, spring rolls, sushi all in for the same price.

  3. Watching the World Cup on Thai TV is a joke even the locals give it two thumbs down. :)

It's not so bad. Try this...

Pour out a round of drinks, then everytime a commentator goes "Ohooo" take a sip.

Remember 2 commentators doing it counts as a double.

Last time we did this the wife was plastered before half time (though that was a particularly good match).

  4. No one has to pay the 150 baht ATM fee, as long as they choose from the right group of Thai ATMs (those not charging the fee) such as Government Savings Bank, United Overseas Bank, AEON, and maybe even still Ayudhya....

Ayudhya have joined the 150 club! I tried to withdraw yesterday (28th) but was warned would be charged 150B. Withdrew from UOB with no charge; Nwide debit card.

  5. With a child, rather than marriage, does the 21 day requirement apply? I ask because of what it says on:

    http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/ba...p?page=service#

under "Change Visa" / "For a family member of a Thai (applicable only parents, spouse or child)"

In case of no children, the application must be submitted 21 days before visa expiration...

Which could be interpreted as "in the case of children, there is no 21 day requirement". Or am I way off the mark here?

  6. It is possible to convert a visa exempt entry or tourist visa into a non-immigrant visa. It requires 2 things:

    1. you need to have at least 21 days left on your permission to stay

    2. you need to fulfill the stricter requirements for an anual extension of stay, NOT the requirements for the visa itself.

    Thanks Mario2008, I wasn't aware of that.

So in the case in question, because of the 21 day requirement, the advice would be to next time enter the country not over land but via an airport. This will give a 30 day visa exempt entry which will then allow the opportunity to convert to a non-immigrant visa and then request an extension to stay?

    What could go wrong! :o

  7. The original poster asked...

a friend of mine is now having to do 15 day border runs as his one year visa has expired, he has heard that it may be possible to get a one year visa extension as his girlfriend has just had a baby and it has his surname on the birth certificate. my friend is from england

    can anyone help?

The Thai Police Order 777/2551 states:

2.18 In the case of a family member of a Thai... (1) The alien has obtained a temporary visa (NON-IM)

THerefore, my understanding is that in order to obtain a one year visa extension, the individual first has to obtain a visa, specifically a NON-IM visa (15 day permit to stay not being a visa). To do this he would have to leave the coujntry and go to a consulate.

    Land of smiles?

    Land of confusion!

  8. I try calling my phone from my friend's but can't. I try my DTAC sim in my friends Nokia and that works: I can make and receive calls. I try my friend's AIS sim in my LG KG200 and that doesn't work. For 3 days my phone can send and receive texts but can't make calls.

this story does not make sense.

Why didnt you call your missus on your friends phone or any other public phone........ or didnt you notice her absence over those 3 days :o

Or buy a 1500 baht used Nokia from a street vendor?

    Yep, should have done that.

  9. I try calling my phone from my friend's but can't. I try my DTAC sim in my friends Nokia and that works: I can make and receive calls. I try my friend's AIS sim in my LG KG200 and that doesn't work. For 3 days my phone can send and receive texts but can't make calls.

I did call her from my friends phone. Also she called me in the hotel room at night.

  10. Phone fails in Bangkok then works on return home!

    Here's the story:

I flew to Bangkok for 3 days in order to get paperwork allowing marriage. While there I get a text from the fiance asking why she can't call me. I try to call her but can't. The phone seems to reset. I can't call anyone. I try calling my phone from my friend's but can't. I try my DTAC sim in my friends Nokia and that works: I can make and receive calls. I try my friend's AIS sim in my LG KG200 and that doesn't work. For 3 days my phone can send and receive texts but can't make calls.

When I try to call it says "Calling" as normal while trying to connect then, when the other phone should start ringing and my phone say "Alerting", it just powers off as if the battery had become disconnected. After about 15 seconds it lights up again and says "Searching" for a signal and is soon back to normal but without the song and dance of a regular power on. Signal strength was good and battery good. I even tried it while plugged into the charger with the same result.

When I got to the new BKK airport to fly home the phone started working normally again and has been fine since. As you can imagine, this is a bit hard for the Mrs to believe.

    Questions:

    1. Anyone had this happen to them or heard of this happen to anyone else?

    2. Any of you tech wizzes have any idea how this could happen?

  11. I thought the best bit was the throwing the t-shirts. It was good to see all the Thai gf's lose their cool and join the fray squealing and grabbing.

That Ratri is a seriously beautiful place. Only open for dinner though so that view goes to waste during the day.

But what I want to know about the party is...what happened to all the bones? Do they just get thrown out with the rubbish are are they separated and given to Soi Dog Foundation or something?

As for future events, how about a beach bbq with games and things like volleyball, bring the kids... and dogs...and beer. Or how about that Oktoberfest place on the edge of Patong? I haven't been but it might be good if we could get a bunch of people and strike a deal on prices.

  12. anyone still wanting the valuable 1 year non immigrant O visa, I highly reccomend Singapore. Not may countries issue 1 year anymore around this region, and unlesss you want to fly to Oz or the UK, Singapore and KL are your 2 choices.

Also if you apply for a non O in Singapore and it gets refused, you will get a tourist visa. So maybe it could be an idea to think of a long shot reason to apply for a 1 year Non O ( such as family or freinds living here ) and try, that way if you get refused you will be issued a tourist visa without question.

I have applied for a Non O in my home country on the basis of visiting friends and been successful. Are you saying that Singapore and KL are likely to issue Non O's to foreigners on the same basis? Is this what you did?

  13. I am sure that if say, I wanted to buy a Tuk-Tuk, and get a work permit and taxi tourists around the island that there would be some red tape, and maybe a license fee or something

This from the "Any Questions" section of the Phuket Gazette:

Q: Why is there no songtaew bus running between Karon and Patong?

A: β€œIn 1994, we established a public transport route linking Patong and Karon. After just three days, however, the driver was pulled from his vehicle and badly beaten by competitors.

We would still like to have an investor operate a songtaew along that route, but since 1994 nobody has contacted us about it.

They are probably worried about having similar problems and losing their investment capital. Public transport in Phuket faces many problems of this nature. ”

Monday, May 10, 2004 Teerayuth Prasertphol, Deputy Director, Phuket Provincial Transportation Office.

To beat the tuktuk mafia I think we'd need a governer with balls and non-local police or army brought in.
