  1. What a useless thread.

Appears to have turned out that way. I'm of the opinion most posters are 'back of fag packet architects'. 'Yeah, designed it meself' laugh.png Hence all the ugly generic 'design' here. Hopefully this will change with the ongoing putsch to rid the country of those whose intellect appears to be on par with the indigenous people whom they so roundly deride thumbsup.gif

I know someone that went to immigration, this past Tuesday and paid ฿ 20,000, plus an extra 10,000 (4 years overstay). They threatened to lock him up or pay the extra. He choose the extra, and is now legal again. (this isn't bull!)

I do not know about whether this is "bull" or not BUT it is un-evidenced, hearsay anecdote which should be ignored.

Christ on a bike. Some of you should really really get out more blink.png

  3. Why does it not surprise me that so many slackers here on TV are offended by my statement that we should all follow the rules and comply with the immigration laws?

Because they are in a constant state of flux for obvious reasons? Psychophant much? Forgot. DUH.

We had a problem with the roof leaking last year(rented house, the owners got a couple of different Thai's to fix the problem, both times the guy stood on the roof(flat gently sloping roof, scratched there heads then disappeared never to return, eventually it was sorted by another Thai guy who seemed to know what he was doing!

Well that's the OP's problem sorted then!!

The 'OP's' problem is about to be 'sorted' by long awaited/anticipated visit by the Roofer today. Thank you all for you er, advice.

  5. Quoting the OP: "I've had a BIG problem with a section of my roof since it was built 10 years ago. It appears to be the only section facing in just one particular direction. The other five sections are not problematical. "

Cannot make head or tail of it, or is it that I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed?

    Pic?

    Think Frank Gehry.

  6. Retired Farang roofing contractor with 40 years in the business is unavailable to compete with Thai knowledge of weathering buildings.

Apologies if your nose has been put out of joint, but in my not limited experience here, no matter how good you may have been in Chipping Sodbury, you will have no clue as to how to guard against the slings and arrows of a diametrically opposed (weather wise) tropical climate. None. For example, against my better judgment, one farang covered this section with what appeared to be latex. Worked fine first night, ran down my louvered windows and walls when the sun came up. Next one, I kid you not, suggested FELT.

So, as time has given Thai contractors to work out the difference between thatching bamboo and tiled roofs, I'd go with one of them every time. PS, if I'd known what I know now, I would've opted for the tin roof I had in a beautiful old Thai style in the jungle house. Got a leak? Plug it up with mastic, job done biggrin.png

  7. Even more roadkills with these soundless cars .

They should build in a soundsystem so people hear that there is a car approaching.

Christ, there's always one isn't there. So light rail/trams would, in your view be 'death by stealth'? laugh.png

Okay, let's make all automobiles as LOUD as fck just so you know they're coming. Christ on a bike ... blink.png

  8. I think you mean 400k. Not exactly a new rule.

No, I mean, you must either show 400k OR 40k per month in the form of past three months statements, much like the Retirement 800k OR 65k per month. This requirement on Phuket is, according to my neighbour's consul, NEW.

It doesn't affect me personally but my neighbour did say this was new. Maybe he's confused. He's old. And Australian.

  9. I've had a BIG problem with a section of my roof since it was built 10 years ago. It appears to be the only section facing in just one particular direction. The other five sections are not problematical. Therefore, need a 'specialist' - Thai only. Had called some 'highly recommended' named 'Piset' last year, who didn't show up, however today promised (again) to show up Saturday. Anyone know this guy? Have experience with him? If not, any THAI recommends would be appreciated. Enough of the farang cowboys here. Thanks. Monsoon's a-commin' ...

  10. I know this is a Thai website, but here are the numbers for Vietnam.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Vietnam in the first two months of this year dropped 40.3 percent from a year earlier, while the respective plunges of the Hong Kong and Russia markets were 51 percent and 25.7 percent.

    http://tuoitrenews.vn/business/26571/vietnams-international-arrivals-fall-10-on-drops-from-china-russia

Good post! Reaffirms what I have seen with less Russians in Saigon and Nha Trang compared with the same time last year.

I assume a fair amount of Chinese visit Vietnam by land, so maybe the Chinese tour operators are doing the same as the Russians did and are selling financed, all-inclusive package tours to Thailand by air? Hence the drop in numbers going into Vietnam and the increase in flights full of Chinese visiting Thailand.

Interesting to read in that article about a surge in certain European nationalities visiting Vietnam.

So let us all name one good thing the Russians and the Chinese have done to contribute to Thailand. Other than it's tourism coffers, proceeds of which go directly to the treasury/trough. ONE thing. I've never heard of any philanthropy from either group. It simply isn't in their cultural makeup, much like the Thais. With exception of the Thai Muslims who I today saw raising a big fundraiser at one of the mosques here on Phuket, for the out of work.

  11. No more Russians, less Euro-Landers - why should Thailand care ?

every single one of them is replaced by five "quality" - tourists from mainland China....

    the times they are a-changing......

More to the point. Why should YOU care, you being presumably farang and all. Or are you merely one of those adding to the problem insofar as 'WELCOME RUSKIES! YOU HAVE MONEEEEE!" Or just flapping your gums here on this haha illustrious forum?dry.png Do tell.

  12. "The charter has undergone more than a dozen rewrites in the last 80 years, either by democrats trying to consolidate parliamentary power"

Just the Democrats? Don't think so

"In the eyes of the country's elite, democratically elected politicians have ruined Thailand with populist policies and cronyism that lead the poor astray."

So AFP thinks populism and cronyism are good things?

"A year ago the veteran conservative was giving rousing speeches to crowds of protesters clamouring for the toppling of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and a military takeover.

Thailand's generals did just that in May."

Really? I thought yingluck had been removed before then.

AFP take on things, always at right angles to the truth, not lies {well not always} but never the whole truth.

Whoever cites AFP as a credible 'news' source? Thaivisa and the predominantly 'mericun viewers on Yahoo 'News' laugh.png

  13. He's worried about the EU no longer buying Thailand fish due to one Thai reporter's commentary? Hey, General Numbnuts, here's a news flash for you. There have been NUMEROUS reports by media associations outside of Thailand, who have conducted their own exhaustive investigations, and then written their reports, and I can pretty much guarantee that those damming reports carry a lot more weight with the EU than one report from a Thai journo. You better wake up to the real world, and stop living in your fantasy land.

He is quintessentially Thai. He doesn't believe there's a World outside of Thailand and if there were, Thailand arrogantly asserts it's supremacy of such.

  14. This is why some posters need to think more before speaking aloud themselves, nevermind criticising the big guy for what he says.

In another topic I pointed this out and one of the very vocal members who pulls no punches with his views on the junta government replied that he is using an internet proxy.

So here it is again in this topic: for those who want to speak 100% freely you need to put some form of condom on your tongue: whether that be a proxy or residing outside the junta's jurisdiction.

Otherwise, don't let the bedbugs bite....

You do not need an internet proxy to be able to view the almost daily gaffes being reported by almost all mainstream media. What's he gonna do? Shut down the internet?

Some of you need to look at news sources outside TV news forum and BKKPost/Nation.

  15. I would be interested to know how much money they actually spend here in Thailand and not just how many visitors come here. From my observations I find the Russians extremely frugal or tighter than a ducks ass. I just don't understand when on holiday you would refuse to pay 100 baht for a deck chair or buy a water or beer from a vendor, instead walking to the Mini Mart or 7-11 saving 1 or 2 baht.

I believe 'tourism' is of secondary importance to many of them. They seem to see Thailand and it's highly corrupt practices as a golden opportunity to open many diverse 'businesses' here as well as pimping out their women. Love the 'online workers'. 90% of my spam box now written in cyrillic. Russians = New Nigerians.

  16. I want to thank Prayut for helping me indirectly on the visa for my

Thai wife to go to America. With my application I am going to

enclose a cover letter that says with the political situation

deteriorating by the day here, and Thailand clearly moving into

a d********p, it would be cruel and punishing to her to deny her

a visa and force her to stay here. Plus I feel that there is far

worse in civil disobedience waiting down the road here.

Thaksin must be loving every minute of the bizarre Prayut

comedy show that is alienating the entire country. Everyone knows

the expression about absolute power corrupting absolutely, I have

just never seen it played out in front of me....Threatening reporters

is NOT going to play well in international media.

It hasn't. Some of today's news sources have already reported he is threatening to execute them.

  17. i think the country deserves more than a leader with a hair trigger temper and no control over his mouth. Iif he bothers to explain anything the ' only joking ' routine has worn thin.

How long before he screws up on the international stage and really embarrasses the country ?

Of curse it can be censored for domestic consumption but is likely to play big in the international media and will filter through.

Those with access to media reports outside of the country are well aware that horse has already bolted.I'm guessing the misspell 'curse' was a Freudian slip? biggrin.png

  18. Prayut Chan-o-cha is frustrated. Abhisit Vejjajiva is full of doubts. Thaksin Shinawatra must be smiling. But what do the trio - or, in fact, everyone in badly divided Thailand - have in common?

Oh this one's easy. None of them gave a tinker's cuss about Thailand's massive social inequality until the results of which threatened their queue number at the trough/presented them with opportunities to cut in line.
