The problem is that you are living in a country where corporate punishment is the norm and not the exception.
As a teacher i would be willing to be that everything else had been attempted to get the kid inline and he had not gotten with the program.
Negotiation is the way to go here as there are issues that probably could resolve this at home. For instance Dad telling his kid to smarten up and get with the program so that teachers do not have to punish him.
If the child behaves then there is no need to punish. I am sure a girl hitting him would not be the issue and there is no mention of how hard the kid was hit on the head.
Remember folks that are from the US. Sometimes it is the kids fault do not start to blame everyone else if your kid is a pain in the ass. Be happy your kid is not in a school that has bamboo.
The ombudsman that made the change before did nothing that tells me therr is a lot we are missing.
So you`re saying that it`s ok to beat a kid who doesn`t behave? Please tell us where you teach so I can keep my kids away from there.
Are you saying your kids don't behave? Have you ever been a teacher in Thailand?
I am really trying as hard as I can to see your point here, but I just can`t get my head up my ass.

There is a big difference between giving a kid a tap on the ass if they misbehave and beating a child.
Have you ever thought that there may be an issue with the kid pushing things. As to where i teach it really does not matter most schools in thailand have corporal punishment.
Is it right I am gong to agree that it is not. however, it is also not right that no matter what the kid does he gets a pass to the next year.
Would you rather that your child which i am sure is as pure as the driven snow is not allowed to learn because this student has decided that they do not want to learn and would rather disrupt the class?
I think not.
There is an old adage that if you do the Crime you must do the time.
The kids know what happens if they push things to the extreme. This is not something that just happens on a whim.
If anyone has an idea that would work better please suggest it to the powers that be and to your child's teacher.
The one i liked with my daughter was send me a note in her journal that she was a problem and I would deal with it.
Unfortunately you cannot expect parents that have a feeling of entitlement to do anything.
The root of it all, I think, is something you said: I quote you: "There is a big difference between giving a kid a tap on the ass if they misbehave and beating a child."
I believe that this was a topic about a father who believes that his sons teachers are beating him, not just giving him a tap on his ass.
I am painfully aware that here where I live the teachers use thin bamboo sticks to hit the children on their fingers and the back of their hands, backs and asses, even the back of their thighs sometimes, if they misbehave or haven't done their homework. But I would go absolutely ballistic if I had a child come home from school bleeding from somewhere due to a teacher or with a head injury.
And I don`t care if it`s the norm here, I would absolutely tear the school down with my own two hands.

alcohol is the devil
that with tobacco, the biggest killers
but police like to put you in jail for 1 yaba tablet or half a gram of weed
And it is so difficult to beat someone to death with a bag of weed.

I have never brought a gun to a bar before, so if someone hits me in the head with a bottle I would just have to beat him to death with my fists. A bit more work but.

a lot of women say...size does not matter...
they never said that to me !
Your lucky you have met some understanding women.
It is just what women are conditioned to say isn`t it?
Like when she asks you: "Do I look fat today?"
You are supposed to answer: "No!"

Hitler is Hitler.
Mao is Mao.
Stalin is Stalin.
Pol Pot is Pol Pot.
It's not a dead bodies competition.
Each case has it's own specific history.
I would submit the average college educated Thai (who didn't study foreign affairs or similar) would not know any of those people. Maybe Pol Pot.
Not even Pol Pot, I assure you.

Can not do anything else but laugh at this.
Somebody must actually have thought that Hitler was a superhero.

My father in law got bitten by a snake in his foot when he was walking on the bottom of a small pond that had been emptied.
Nobody knew it had happened, and I came to see him about one hour later. He showed me the bite and I told him he had to go see the doctor.
He said: "Mai pen rai. I think I know what kind of snake it was and it is not poisonous." I asked him if he saw the snake, he said no.....
His leg hurt bad that day but the next day he was fine.

Interesting thread, it gets me worried though with 2 young kids about playing in the garden. I guess I should get a net Do snakes generally thrive in rainy or hot season? Any tips? For instance is it better to keep the grass really short?.
A net won`t do it. You need a big dome that covers your whole property.

I knew the posts on this topic would be hilarious
But seriously, trafficking is human slavery of the worst kind. Plain and simple. Well done by the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women who were available for the call for help.
I hope they catch the 38 year old Thai woman and put her somewhere she belongs.

A guy in my village told me that one morning he was leaving his house, there was a snake as thick as his thigh blocking his front door. I asked him what he did then. He said: "I left through the back door of course."
I asked him what happened with the snake. He said he didn`t know because it wasn`t there anymore when he came home in the afternoon.....
Back in 1970 there was a Python that was caught in Siam Square. The thing measured 26 ft and was as big around as your leg. The Bangkok Post (or The Bangkok World) had a picture on their front page of a row of Thai Police holding it. It was sent to Dusit Park where I went to see it.(my Thai wife refused to come with me) It was in a plexi enclosure and I couldn't tell where it began or ended.
Pretty impressive

I don`t know much about helmets, but I know that you must never buy one without crash-testing it first.

first of all - how many of you would be hero's have actually been in a fire situation in a building ?
Most fires smoke is what kills and it kills fast, from the pictures this fire looked pretty serious, I don't know if these guys could have been saved or not and I don't know if the officer could have made a more effective attempt to save them, in the dark (pitch black) can't breath - I challenge anyone here to do better
I've been in a situation like this and was driven back by smoke and heat - as it happens nobody died but could easily have happened - they jumped out of an upstairs bedroom window
We all know about building standards here and regulations, unfortunately they are not to the same standards as the west, should we blame the officers who attempted to save them - I think not
...and that is why we should not be outraged?
Because we know, the security measures suck?
According my earlier comment, they died because the lights went out and the guarding officer couldn't find the key in the dark (at least, it says so in the OP).
Do you know, what could have prevented that?
1) a flashlight, available at any 7eleven for 65 Baht and 2 batteries!
2) giving a sh1t!
Not sure he would have found the flashlight in pitch dark
More seriously sometimes in a blaze, with the smokes it could be totally imposible to take a single breathe without fainting... So, we do not know !
I guess...just a guess....that there was not clean air in one second and masses of poisonous smoke the next second.
And if you HAVE a flashlight and you KNOW it is in the top drawer of your office desk, you MIGHT find it...even in the dark!
But sure: we do not know!
For those who would like to see an example of how quickly a fire can develop, take a look at this:

Imagine if they treated whales the same way. Whale fin soup. Cut off the fins and throw the mutilated body back in the ocean. That would create some reactions I think. Why should we treat sharks any different?
As a fellow fisherman I find it is disgusting the way they "harvest" shark fins. I am glad to see that somebody is trying to do something about it.
I am ashamed to say that I have also tasted this soup many many years ago and it was nice, but just about anything could be cooked to taste good. Find something else to eat!

There are lots of nice places around Khao Yai National Park, near Korat.
It is about 400 meters above sea level, so it is not as hot as other places and the air is very clean.
The only negative thing I know about this place is that land/properties might be a bit expensive compared to other parts of the country.

Great topic. I had a big smile on my face reading it
I am in my 9th year living 60 km east of Korat and still loving it.
