  1. Managed to lose my reading glasses on the Plane.

    I'm in Pattaya(specifically) Jomtien.

My optician is sending me my script, Will an English one suffice or will they insist on a re test(It's only 3 months old).

If so please can anyone recommend somewhere?

    Many thanks.

if anyone's interested what this is about. Oh and "flang", who's keeping the score these days?

Got to admit, I agree with the OP on this one. The guy that started that thread is seriously a beer or two short of a six-pack. And he actually thinks it's a "cultural question." I was going to post on that thread but it's so profoundly idiotic that I decided not to.

I just read part of the thread, it's truely idiocy at its best. This is the class of individual that this place attracts and is one of the reasons I actively avoid tourist Thailand at all costs.

I'd like to say, I think you are wrong about him being just one or two beers short of a six pack, clearly, there's no beer in his six pack, none whatsoever. wink.png

Is there a correlation between the weakining of the baht, and the lowering of standards of new arrivals?

I've seem some of the most moronic topics in the past week here, that would occupy a large portion of the Top Ten most retarded.

I did initially decide to spit venom back, but decided to rise above it; I'll stay away in future, there are plenty of polite forums out there. Thank you for your input.

  4. This is certainly a classic thread in the making.

Never a dull moment. Seriously, his mother must be so proud.

I am sure she is laugh.png Especially f he has finally moved out of her house at the age of 50
Ohh I doubt that's happened, but she's at least happy that he climbs upon a budget airline twice a year to head over and attempt to spread his seed, after all mother knows he's unable to do it at home. She probably submits his welfare forms whilst he's away. wink.png

He's certainly sits proudly upon the steps of 7/11 each evening, preloading so he doesn't have to pay those pesky bar prices. His attire is usually a wife beater (singlet), board shorts and thongs. He feeds once a day at McDonalds and believes the term 'sexy man' are actually true. He's the kind of foriegner that tries to engage with you as you rush past hoping not to catch anything airborne from him. In his mind, he's living the life and no doubt his friends back in Western Sydney (or whatever other hole he climbed from)are jealous of him and secretly aspire to dump their 500 pound wives and join him next year.

You can normally spot these punters at the airport, their tooth to tattoo ratio gives them away wink.png

You know absolutely nothing about me but have a great deal to say I never realised this forum contained so many insulting people, I'll refrain from descending to your level, maybe my question was a little silly on reflection, but at least I don't randomly accuse strangers of horrible things.sad.png

  5. Idiot

Thanks for all your posts, particularly the ones who were kind enough to be polite, and not personally insulting when they don't know me. sad.png It was a genuine question, and I wasn't seeking attention or trolling intentionally. My humble apologies to anyone who thought so.

    Pictures please

  7. To the OP... No bar fine should be paid. It is something you have built up together, but she sounds enterprising so she may just hit you with trying to get a bar fine.

Thanks, you're right, she is a very clever girl, very good English and Norwegian, which in Jomtien, serves her very well. The kind of girl I've seen guys go nuts over with one bat of the eyelashes. Luckily I never did. Seen to many casualties I think. smile.png

  8. If she owns and runs the bar why would you have to pay her a bar fine - or anything for that matter? wink.png.pagespeed.ce.HJgPQ3U3SA.png

Thanks Topt, as I thought, I might buy her dinner occasionally though. smile.png

  9. Hi All,

I travel to Thailand once or twice a year. and have been seeing the same Bar Girl for the last 3. We are not in love or making any plans we are just compatible, so, when I'm there I stick with her. I don't send her any money whilst at home, so she is free to do as she pleases then. I never ask. This year in between trips, she has bought a small bar of her own. I don't know where she got the money, but I think it was someone in her family not a flang, to be honest I don't care like I said, it's not love.

She runs the bar day to day but says she still wants to see me when I go over in a couple of months. My question is, that whilst I'm happy to pay our usual arrangement, I am less happy to pay a bar fine, as she OWNS the bar now. Am I off the mark?

    Thanks in advance.

  10. Thanks again, home is in England so the ll bean option may be difficult to source. I travel a lot so there's no point buying something that won't last. I also understand the point that expensive luggage is a target, so I'll keep on researching to find a happy medium I hope.

  11. Hi,

My Samsonite has pretty much bitten the dust on the last flight here. I've seen plenty of places selling

them, but wondered if anyone who's bought from them could give any opinions or advice please,

I'm wondering whether to buy here or at home, as I know the label probably isn't going to mean much here.

    Thanks, Matt.

  12. Best of luck Blue,

I went through AA about 6 years back and fell off the wagon a couple of times afterward and finally managed it a couple of years back(fingers crossed!) As many people on this topic have already said, you've made the first most important step that a lot of people never make; I've had mates who still didn't in the advanced stages of liver failure. It is difficult but it gets a bit easier every day.

Like others on here I have my reservations about AA, as to some people they can seem a bit evangelical, however they do give you a framework to move forward, so it's all a matter of choice really, as there are alternatives already mentioned, and some kind of help should smooth things out, it did for me.

I was drinking VERY heavily when I decided to stop, rock bottom as it's called, so it's worth mentioning the health risks of stopping suddenly, which may or may not apply to you. I only found out afterwards how dangerous it is to stop heavy consumption abruptly.

Enough said, all the best on a courageous start.

  13. A short trip out of town gets you to Sri Racha where Phyathai Hospital is usually good quality and far less expensive than any of the private hospitals in Pattaya, and it has a psychiatric dept.

    http://www.phyathai-sriracha.com/en/department/psychiatric/

Many thanks Sheryl, hopefully I'll never need it as I've been well on holiday recently, but it's best to be prepared. I paid around £100(5000THB) a night at Pattaya Memorial, will it be even cheaper than that?

  14. I noticed you speak of £'s which would indicate you are from the UK.

Returning home would ensure access to "free" care in the event of an acute episode and on going community support which will never be available in Thailand.

The cost of one stay in Pattaya Memoria would cover the cost of a ticket home.

The time to think about your situation is whilst you are well.

There are a number of issues not the least being your ability to sustain a legal presence in Thailand over the long term.

As you know your condition is not insurable and you will therefore have to meet any care costs from within your own , private, resource which if anything like mine is not inexhaustible:)

Yes I am from the U.K and I do receive on going care here which is, of course, free.

I DO NOT live in Thailand, my question is related to dealing with the possibility of becoming ill whilst on holiday and being temporarily unable to fly.

I am well now, which is why I'm trying to prepare for the worst and gather as much information as I can.

You are of course completely right, it would be foolish of me to attempt to live in Thailand unless I were prepared to pay all the medical bills all the time, but I've got sick twice in 30 trips, so even with

1 hefty bill it's still worked out cheaper than 30 very expensive travel insurance policies. The alternative is not coming at all, which I'm not prepared for just yet.

  15. Have you thought of the possibility of returning home.

The provision of psychiatric care is not a strong point in Thailand and in patient care reaching Western standards will be expensive unless you access care in a Government facility where costs will be less.

I wasn't in a position to return home in either case, as I was unfit to fly due to the properties of the illness(physical weakness and disorganised thought processes mainly).

It doesn't actually require a great deal of acute psychiatric care, just medical supervision to make sure that meds and nutrition are given, and I am kept out of harms way over a 7-10 day period until the episode subsides.

Thank you anyway for the reply.

I should add that Pattaya Memorial did that very well, the trouble is they are often full, which is why I was looking for an alternative at similar cost.

  16. Hi All,

I suffer with a recurring condition(Bipolar Disorder) which is expensive to ensure as pre existing. I've had to be admitted in Thailand twice in ten years, and had a good experience at Pattaya Memorial which cost me £800, and a bad one at Bangkok Pattaya, which cost me £4000. I won't ever need any operations, just care, and would be able to travel a reasonable distance to get it, say 50k or so if need be, if Pattaya Memorial was full, as it was last time; I was shoved into BP, where I was overcharged, and where my expensive watch was stolen. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go for reasonable/quality care, in case the worst happens again please?

    Regards, Matt.

  17. Hi,

I can give more detail on the circumstances if need be, but in brief, I have a Norwegian friend who has an illness similar to M.S and is sadly not long for this world, he lives in Norway but visits Thailand two or three times a year. He has a Thai girlfriend who nurses him twenty four hours a day when he's here, and he wants to look after her when he goes. I'm assuming he has to make a Will in Norway but does he need to make any provisions in Thailand?

    Thanks in advance.

  18. When I changed my phone recently I needed to change from a regular SIM to a micro-SIM.

I just went to the True shop in BigC where they did it for free in about a minute.

Many thanks Kitten, did pretty much as you said, went to Tuk Com, got a True Inter sim for 120THB which had 70THB on it; they resized it in seconds, topped up and Hey Presto valid for a year. Easy when you know how. They sent me to True shop next door for wifi/3G, but that's a new sim apparently. Still no matter, I have my Laptop in the room unlimited. No more messing around each time I come, happy days.
