  1. Remember that Thailand is a Buddhist Country ;-) They celebrate the true "Winter Festival" a celebration of consumerism, eating and drinking and decorations. A bit like home really except it hot and humid. Also it is not a holiday.

  2. CiaranO this is a country without any back up system. It's not like the UK or other wealthy western states. I bet they have tried like hell to find something to do. I kind of guess you have never been without a living and starving.

You really can't fault the clean up. Thailand has lost visitors hand over fist. My friends who visit are appalled by both the street and beach vendor invasion

Going to any main stream beach area in Thailand was becoming a pain. No sand only umbrellas. Vendors waking you up to sell something etc. etc . But and It's a big but. The clean up seems to be happening without a plan "B" It's OK moving them on but you have to provide them somewhere to go.

Beach chairs and umbrellas are alright but when they are only 5% occupied because they have destroyed the beach atmosphere then something has to happen.

I have always thought that there is something strange with the Thai mentality (One of many hehe) Why open an exactly similar business right next door to one doing the same thing?

Living here is great because you can soon learn where to avoid. Unfortunately holiday makers coming here for their fortnightly holiday don't have that luxury.

Let the clean up carry on but sort out the human debris left behind

  3. Thailand is at least 56 years behind the UK in Bus safety !!

    http://www.britishpathe.com/video/testing-london-buses.

Plus the drivers are trained in the UK. The last big coach crash was considered a national tragedy not passed off as oops!

http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2008/nov/27/heathrow-coach-driver-crash-uk. The driver killed three people and was jailed !

I am surprised there as many as 20000 of these death trap coaches operating in Thailand I would have thought the daily toll would have reduced the numbers.

As for the minibuses like most people in Thailand we have all witnessed at least one crash.

The last one I got mixed up in was a head on between the minibus and a lorry. The lorry had jacked-knifed on a steep incline. The minibus passengers were all wearing seatbelts!! (There was farang in the minibus I guess he suggested it) Unfortunately the belts were attached to the seats. The minibus was obviously being used for dual purpose. Non of the seats were bolted down. They has put extra long bolts on the seats so they could drop them into position. There were about 12 people plus seats in the front half of the minibus. All attached to each other. Not nice. We had to disentangle the mess through the rear doors. Pull seat back undo seat lets throw seat out followed by passengers. then tackle the next row of seats etc. The damage to the bus was light the mess inside was stupid

Would I choose between a double decker bus and a minibus. No way would I travel in either.

    Advice

If you use a minibus check your seat is fixed down.

If you arrive at an accident stop to help (Thais don't help) make sure you get your vehicle to the far side of the accident. This stops it being hit by another vehicle but also means when you have done all you can to help, you can sneak off and not get involved in the bureaucracy. This is UK learnt where the police are bloody minded and ensure a road is closed for hours to justify their existence.

  4. Nervous here! On my phone and don't have grammar or spell checker. Doesn't look high speed. Damage minimal having hit a heavy fairly immovable object. Surely survivable with an airbag and seat belt. Alcohol helps survive these sort of accidents as the body is relaxed! Problem is alcohol also causes this sort of accident. So I guess things even out. Anyway who said he was drunk. It would be nice to discuss some actual facts. Sad my condolences to his family and friends where ever they are.

Sent from my GT-I9300T using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

  5. OK my pennies worth.

1 The architects mess at arrivals has caused the stupid escalator/lift problem. Meeting and greeting is a nightmare. It was worse before the present rearrangement. It has changed from stupid to confusing. The signs do now not reflect the restricted access.

2 Car Park floor numbers are not matched to terminal floor numbers. Stupid .

3 Touts in the arrivals meeting area.

4 The departures drop of area is iffy! But that is more down to thai driving than the access.

Immigration seems to have improved even at the expense of the dual floor set up. Again an architectural balls up

It needs some engineers in to sort out the mess ;-)

  6. I was going to say that it was impossible to get in the UK due to health and safety issues !

So wondered if it might be difficult anywhere else.

But I see it has been modified to be on sale again.

I tried to order it a few years ago for a contract I was working on and got a severe bollocking ;-( Health and safety as ever only good after the event.

I wonder if it is still as good as it was.

  7. Same sex marriage in the UK? The ever friendly ex Archbishop Carey is again trying to put in a wrecking amendment in the House of Lords. He never gives up. I suppose the Bishops are a little miffed after a CoE vicar called the present Archbishop of Canterbury the W word on twitter after his absurd comments in the last debate. Or as the church press office replied "it is unseemly to call the Archbishop of Canterbury an onanist ;-) " (I had to look that one up.) I don't think this is going to end with out casualties. Hopefully a secular institution will be the result.

  8. The whole check out concept is strange. Sort purchases so that all chilled or frozen foods are together. A deliberate resort is then carried out on the way through the till ! Next take out canvas bags place goods in canvas bags put in trolley Another helper then removes items from canvas bag wraps in plastic bag and replaces in canvas bag ;-) I have given up refusing straws and spoons it wastes to much time in the confusion!.
