  1. I am a wine person, however i drink beer only if it's artesanal, but when i don't have the money to enjoy what I like i sometimes go for the cheapest, strongest drink, perhaps i just want someone to choose for me, because i am unsure what my instincts say because i am not standing in the rooms physically, so it's more like guessing, than instinct.

  2. Both rooms i negotiated to rent for 9000/baht/month, in high season, both are double bedrooms, both are in patong, equal distance from the beach, they are similar in many ways, except one is a condo, and the other a private room at a backpacker hostel. Both have free internet, fan, (i don't use AC), the condo has a balcony, but the street view is nicer at the hostel, The condo has a deposit, the hostel not. Both have ensuite bathroom. The condo has seperate utility fee, but since i don't use AC, that shouldn't matter much. The hostel price is inclusive of utilities. Both places are near 24hour minimarts. The condo is managed by some Italian rental office place, and rents out dozens of properties around phuket. The hostel is run by an expat with a rooftop bar/restaurant, but has assured me the room is quiet. It seems like the condo would be the better choice, but i just want to double check i am not missing something. Which do you think?

  3. Yes i ve read the tripadvisor reports on Charlies, very mixed results, it seems people hated the dorms, but some liked the private rooms, because it's cheap, and in patong in high season, cheap is almost unheard of, the downside to staying in rawai, is the dangerous motorbike trip needed nightly to go out in patong, and come back again, a 40km roundtrip everytime I want to go out? That's not really what I want to do, so i think i have no choice but to stay in charlies, or equivalent if I can find a similar room for 8000, or 7000, i will take it. One option that just came up is here

  5. In providing passport photos to the Myanmar visa office in Bangkok, some websites say the photos must have a white background, but i have photos with a red background, do you think they will reject them? I have over 20 passport photos, but none of the have white backgrounds, does it matter? Thanks

  6. I am going to Myanmar next month, one of the reasons is to discover the Burmese kitchen, particularly vegan-friendly dishes, no egg, no seafood, focusing on sweets, and spicy dishes, i've made a list of the information I've found so far, if you've been, and remember some delacies by name, or exact location, I will be happy to check them out when I'm there. Oh, and please keep the restaurants limited to budget places. Thanks

    Manadalay

Toe Toe Win, a place that serves 21 dishes at once?,

Too Too Myanmar Cuisine, 28th Street (Between 74th & 75th Streets). Supposedly has the best Burmese food in whole Mandalay.

In the southwest block of 81st & 26th streets, enter the unmarked alley besides the Myawaddy Bank during the afternoon to find a pleasant indian lady making savoury and sweet street pancakes in a cast iron frying pan in front of her house. Cheap, delicious, and pleasant company.

Nepali Food, 81st St, between 26 and 27. Simple and delicious chapatis served with three curries (1500-2000 kyat)

Nylon Ice Cream Bar, The corner of 83 and 25. Serves a variety of ice creams from chocolate to durian - delicious and surprisingly cheap (300 kyat and up) edit

  7. Hi, i am going to Myanmar for 3 week trip next month, and this question is about inexpensive accomodation, about $10/night or less, i don't mind the condition of the room, for example Air con, TV, etc.. i don't want, or need, just a fan, and clean sheets and not a noisy, or smelly environment is OK for me, i don't want any breakfast, or bathroom in my room either, i have a sleeping bag, and i don't mind using it as a sheet, if the bed has bugs. I have experience with bad rooms in India.

Cheap, relatively quiet, central guesthouse, near vegetarian food options

Do you know any other guesthouses in Yangoon and elsewhere, that you have personally stayed in? I realize accomodation is a problem in Myanmar, but i am looking for the lower end rooms, perhaps fewer people want to spend their holiday in barely adequete rooms, but i can manage it. I haven't booked any accomodation, i usually never do.

In Bagan, apparently old Bagan is not a good place to stay, as I've heard, do you know guesthouses, near bus station, or new town?

  8. Hi everyone, i am going to Burma for a 3 week trip in November, and I'd like the advice of someone already done the trip about the easiest route (to reduce the number of hours spent on the buses), i am not taking any planes, or trains in the country, but i am open to buses, and boats (slower, prefered).

My route is Yangoon-Mandalay-Bagan-Yangoon, i am thinking to forget Inle Lake, as it will increase the number of hours I have to spend on buses, as i don't like the music, or movies they plan on buses, either in day to pass the time, or at night when people are trying to sleep. I have headphones, but the noise is so great it sneaks its way into my ears anyways. I have to take buses, but i want to reduce time spent on board

I have heard it's best to take the main road between Yangoon-Mandalay, as the amount of time needed to travel is less, than if going Yangoon-Bagan, for example, therefore here's my idea

Yangoon-Mandalay (express bus, main highway, $10 ticket?)

Mandaly-Bagan (slow boat, also $10, i dont know)

Bagan-Yangoon (i am not sure how)

3 weeks, 1 week each area, side trips possible, let me know what you think? Thanks

  9. Hi everyone, i need a basic room, for 1 month (actually 28 days) in Phuket (cheap guesthouse, i have heard about good prices in Kammala, Kata, Karon, however I am also willing to stay in Patong, if I make a good arrangement for 1 month stay, for example on Thanon Nanai, maybe? I want a simple room, no AC, no TV, no pool, or anything really, just a fan, and a bed, in a small, clean room, i will have rented a motorbike, for 1 month as well, so location doesn't matter so much, but i don't want to stay in Phuket town, too far. I also need free WIFI in the room (that's important). What kind of rate are the guesthouses offering for November? Thank you

  10. Hi everyone, i want to rent a fairly new, automatic, 100-150cc, motorbike in Phuket, for 1 month. I am willing to go to Kata, or Karon, or Kamala to rent it to save on Baht, i will be staying in, or around Patong, but i realize maybe cheaper to rent the bike outside Patong. What price on a monthly arrangement do you think I can find in November? Thanks

  11. I'm looking for a currency exchange shop having a good rate (w/o commission) for converting AUD to USD, i am going to Myanmar, and i have a lot of AUD, and i want to convert them to new, crisp, clean looking US bills of all denominations, without marks, ink, stamps, or CB serial numbers, basically they should look brand new, does anyone know where I can find such a place, near a MRT, or BTS station? Today's rate, 1.00 AUD = 1.02134 USD, but i am satisfied to convert at 1:1 ratio. Thank you.

  12. Ok thanks, i start at Lumphini MRT, i will catch the canal as the sun is going down, or just before sunset, my destination is Soi 89/2, looking at google maps, i noticed the soi is opposite the Bangkapi Mall pier, and there appears to be 2 bridges there,

    http://goo.gl/maps/kXiPx

Will i be able to get off that stop, is that the last stop, or do I have to request it? Then cross the bridge, and walk back along the main road to reach the soi

I was thinking about the bus, but i don't want to get stuck in traffic, i don't have the patience for it, and i have to travel in rush hour probably

  13. Hi everyone, can you help me please to understand the way to reach soi 89 ramkamhaeng rd, in bangkapi, bangkok, using the canal boat, and MRT systems, i believe if I reach Petchaburi MRT, i can then walk a short distance to the smaller Canal, which can take me to Bangkapi mall pier, (the last stop), is that true? If yes, what time does the last boat leave near Petchaburi MRT to go Bangkapi? thanks

  14. Having a cap of bandwidth is usually a trait of mobile broadband, and 1-5GBmax/month is a problem, i may need to download 1GB in one day, the actual speed of download is not important for me, as I will be downloading overnight. It's the speed of surfing throughout the day (inc. peak hours) that's important.

My budget is low-medium, so whatever accom I get, the WIFI will be a crucial factor. Will they let me connect to the WIFI, to check its speed before I rent the room? Also, i would need to check the WIFI actually works in the room, and not just downstairs in the common area.

My phone is an old Nokia series, discontinued probably, 2G, no internet capability

  15. I'd like your help to make a decision between investing in mobile broadband, (the (dongle) modem) or to find accomodation (with free wifi in the room). I am going to be in/out of Thailand over a 3 month period, and I like the comfort, and convinience, of having relatively good Internet (surfing speed) sitting on my bed in my room. Finding a room with free Wifi in the room may not be easy since I'm looking for budget accomodation (in the Sathorn area, Bangkok). I'm looking to rent a simple, studio room for 1 month. I don't like the idea of going to the lobby to access the Wifi network, or visiting Internet cafes (with my laptop in tow). I need to download large files daily, and like to have my laptop downloading through the night. So, which route should I go? Wifi in room, or mobile broadband? I've heard some mobile broadband services are slow, the modem itself is expensive, and I maybe can't use it in other countries? I'm leaning toward Wifi in room. What do you think?

  16. I am a vegetarian visiting Bangkok, staying a whole month like to know where very cheap street food can be found late at night or throughout the day that doesn't have meat in it, i am ok with fish sauce, shrimp paste mixed around in my food, but no eggs. I am also looking for medium, to high quality Thai desert spots, have a look at my desired dishes, if you know of a place you'd like to recommend, I will go and visit, thanks.
