  1. Thank you all very much indeed, much appreciated info.

whereas the Ombudsman sounds interesting, the thought of being over 1 months overstay in the hub of those that deal with visa issues is kinda scary, no?

whats to stop them for letting their immigration colleagues know of my waywardness? Sorry, but no experience with an ombudsman office...

cheers again for taking the time out to help

I would pop into the ombudsman office on the second floor of chaeng watana government office.

Sometimes they can help in a special case like this.

Especially since you have been married 18 years

Would that be the 2nd floor or the 5th floor?

I also suffer from epilepsy (part of the reason I twatted the dates) - do you think I should bring this up or best keep it quiet?

    Thanks my friend.

  3. I'm married (18 years. That's for 18 years, not to an 18yr old). Proove monthly income via embassy confirmed letter. Every year we simply hand over the paperwork and eventually get another year in the passport.

But, I totally misjudged it this year and my visa actually ran out Oct 25, not in November as thought!

Yeah, I know I'm a moron etc etc, but with the ฿500/day overstay clock racking up frighteningly, I'd really appreciate any advice on the best and/or only course of action. Cheers in advance...

  4. We're looking at Amazon but hadn't seen cloudflare. Nice one. Thanks.

As for the SSL biznizz, when a visitor wants to purchase an item on our site, they are taken to the PayPal login in page. Would this still be OK for us to use cloudflare then? Sorry if it's a banal question, but the tech side of the web has never really been my ball game...

Yes. As your site/shopping cart would just use a paypal api to confirm payment etc which doesnt require an ssl cert. These days tho, how happy will your customers be entering logins, creating accounts etc if SSL isnt used on your site?

Yeah, I hear what you're saying, but I think the fact that the actual fiscal transaction goes ahead on PayPal, that seems to fill buyers with the confidence they need. Also our target market is girls from 18-25 and I'm not sure that they're savvy enough to embroil themselves looking out for SSL adoption in our site. I could be wrong, but 1 year in, nobody has mentioned the lack of it has deterred them from purchasing. I know for banks and many other types of online businesses it is essential, but do you think it's a must if we're selling $10 t-shirts?

Cheers for all your help & opinions...

  6. Hey All,

Quick question: I've got a small work-related website that's hosted in Singapore, but I'm looking for a company that I can jointly host my site on a European server (preferably UK) along with an Asian server (preferably Singapore). Not looking to pay a fortune either...

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

  7. Hey,

Not sure about the usage over 3g as I use it solely on my iMac, but I listen to Triple J pretty much everyday via "Radioshift", and that's worked well for me. It's a paid app, but will record shows and the quality is perfectly fine with some decent speakers...

My experience with anything streaming over 3g here is poor, but I'm living on the outskirts of Bangkok as opposed to the centre & that may make a difference...

    Good luck.

  8. First of all do you have any programs that are still waiting to be shutdown, hence the waiting time? Second, if disk utility constantly tells you the drive is faulty then maybe the waiting time is related to my first point, an app is trying to shutdown but cannot be written to the disk for whatever reason and so it just hangs.

Thanks for all your inputs. Looks like the culprit was "Hardware Growler" - was just odd though as I'd had it on there for months & this only just started happening?? Ho hum??

    Cheers again!

  9. Disk repair/permissions etc, said that everything "looks OK"?? Not sure it knows what computer it's checking, because the last thing my machine is is OK!?!?

I've found out today that sometimes it does actually bite the bullet & shut itself down - it just takes 20-30 minutes to do it. Unless any magic wands are waved, I guess I'm lumping it back to the shop. As the disc drive is also now playing up & sounding like a 1950's tractor, in an ideal world I'd like to get my money back & head elsewhere. "Mac's don't skip any beats in years" huh?? Mine's hardly got a heartbeat after a few weeks. Gutted.

    Cheers again Nikster,

    W.

  10. First of all I never shut down my Mac - I always put it in sleep mode. That's not a solution of course. And with thailand's flakey power supply you might want to do it (I have a laptop)

    Second try this:

    - disk utility, repair disk permissions. No need to shut down for that

When you run disk first aid, does it report anything? If it does your HDD might be bad. Does the iMac get very hot?

Did you do a system update recently? If so, try installing the "Combo Update" from apples website.

Once you have done all that and still see the problem, let the Mac people take care of it. It's still under warranty so whatever it is they'll fix it free of charge.

    Hey Nikster,

Thanks a lot for the helpful looking info. I can answer a couple of your qquestions

/suggestions right now ( not at the beast machine right now)

    • when I run the disc repair from the installation cd, everytime I get the same message - "Your disc is corrupted & needs to be fiixed" ( can't remember exact wording ).

    • it does get hot, but I'm not sure if it's overtly so, bearing in mind the 35 degrees here !?!?,

    • I have done a system update recently, with the main one being a recommended OS update.

What could I except of the "Combo Update" ? I guess if that's not a fix but a cleaner way to update, then I'm back at the store. Will I have to pay for their services do you think or will the warranty cover all expenses?

Thanks very much again for the heads-up, I'll let you know how I get along.

    Happy days,

    W.

  11. Hey there.

Bought my first iMac ever a couple of months ago & for 6 weeks or so I couldn't be happier. Wasn't experiencing any of the typical PC problems, so was indeed properly converted to the cause. But then a couple of weeks ago I started getting this "stuck on the blue screen" at shutdown. Now, literally every day I'm having to go through the 'Installation disc - Utilities - Disk Repair' process & that's obviously not a situation I'm happy with after forking out over £1000 all in.

So I guess my question is whether this is a solvable issue by myself (bearing in mind my minimal Mac technical know-how) or whether I'm either gonna have to do a full system reboot/restore or get my local Mac engineer bod round to fleece me of yet more cash?

So disappointing, especially after experiencing its flawless flow to begin with :(

    Any help/suggestions really gratefully received!

    Cheers

  12. I may know what your problem is. Some apps by default only show a few standard folders for locations to save as file, as you describe.

An example is in the first screen shot uploaded. Next to the file name there is a downwards arrow (circled in red). Click this arrow and a file browser will open allowing you to pick any folder to save to, see the second screenshot.

LEGEND! That's exactly what I wanted to be able to do! Thank you very much for your help as I was sure that this was possible but it was really starting to do my head in that I couldn't. And so simple when you know how!

    Cheers again,

  13. Thanks very much for all your comments.

As it happens, I'm using Firefox over Safari (incidentally - is there any performance difference between the two / can I drag/save my Firefox bookmarks into Safari?).

I've also realised since posting that my main issue with storing files to specific locations is not so much when downloading files from the Internet (though this would still be handy), but when saving a document for example. At the moment, I can't see a workaround for saving the document to one of the standard locations (say Desktop) and then having to go to the Desktop to select it before dragging/dropping it to the sub-folder I wanted it inside in the first place. A two-step process therefore that surely should be just the one? When saving a document in Windows, I have the option to save anywhere I like, but with the Mac OS I only seem to be able to save in the given default locations? Or am I missing something? Or is this just one of those Mac/Windows differentiators?

    Cheers,

    W.

I've figured out how to import firefox bookmarks...like most things, easy when you know how!

  15. Hey All,

Forgive my undoubted Mac ignorance, but after only recently converting from Windows, there are a few issues I'm wrestling with. I won't bore you with them all, but one in particular, I'd really appreciate some help with.

On Windows, when downloading a file from the Internet, I could store it in any folder/sub-folder on the system (my own personal way of storing stuff may be odd to others, but it's one of those things that works for me). However, when similarly downloading something on the Mac, I'm only presented with the standard locations (Desktop, Documents, Applications, Music etc). Is there a way to download a file, say, to a specific sub-folder that I've created within Documents?

As I said, I'm sure it's just my "not knowing new OS" syndrome, but any pointers much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    W.
